I watched the livestream Nintendo hosted from San Diego Comic Con. Nothing groundbreaking there Smash-wise aside from a somewhat dull tournament and some interesting one-on-one matches featuring Bill Trinnen showing off his skills, and he was surprisingly very good.

An interesting announcement made, though, concerns a title that was previously Japan-only. The Mysterious Murasame Castle was released on the Famicom Disk System back in 1986 and was never released outside of Japan until very recently (the European 3DS eshop got it back in May). Now it's coming out in the US for the first time ever on August 7th, and getting a rerelease on the Japanese eShop on July 30th.

Now, you might be wondering why I'm mentioning this? There's currently a buzz in the Smash community that this could mean that Takamaru, the main character of the game, will be announced for Smash 4, be it playable, an assist trophy, or something else. Nothing's been confirmed so far, but given that they went as far as to release an otherwise very obscure retro game worldwide, as well as the fact that he had his own attraction in Nintendo Land (Takamaru's Ninja Castle) and the music from the game was previously used in Brawl, the internet seems to be eating it up.

Personally, I think he could make a pretty good character. Jokes about another sword wielder aside, we really don't have any samurai types in Smash:

Image

He also has several things in his game that could be used for a moveset. Throwing stars, fireballs, limited invisibility, the ability to call down a storm to clear the screen as a final smash, there's a lot of potential in there. I'm not convinced it will actually happen though, just hopeful, especially since Smash has had at least one obscure franchise represented in each game so far (Ice Climbers, Kid Icarus, arguably Earthbound in 64). This could continue that tradition.

One last thing, it's been pointed out that among those 3DS screenshots from the other day, Green Hill Zone from Brawl was shown off as a returning stage. Not sure if that was announced yet, so here you go:

I'm not 100% sure about this possibility of a new character.
Remember last time we got what seemed to be hints towards Shulk, everyone got hyped... and then it was Robin, Lucina, and the return of CF?
I'm just saying, Sakurai's a pro at trolling, and it wouldn't surprise me if he waas getting other people at Nintendo in on it. :ron:

I liked it too. In terms of what the stage did interactively it was a bit on the boring side, but thematically it represented Sonic very well.

But you know, it's a bit weird how the three third party characters each have different stage situations. If they don't get any other stages, between both versions of the game Pac-Man has two brand new different stages, Mega Man has two different versions of the same new stage and Sonic has one new stage and one returning stage.

That was a different situation though. It was a supposed "leak" from a source that claimed the character was definitely in the game without any proof to support it. This is something of the opposite, where there's evidence to support the theory but no one is claiming it to be true beforehand, only possible given the evidence.

Hmm my memory might be failing me but what's Sonic's new stage?

Also the falling ground might have been a little boring in Green Hill Zone but the Lamp post on the left hand side was a sure-fire way to get a KO if you kept the pressure on.

I hope that they did something about the final smashes of certain characters. I mean, they always try to go after you to unleash their final smash on you. Take Brawl Zelda/Sheik for example, when you're within range of her final smash, she unleash it on you, no matter how near or far you are away from her. All she need is timing it right.

I know it sounds confusing when I was talking about Zelda's/Sheik's final smash. Think of it as this way: her final smash is a straight line. And if you're within the straight line, she unleash the final smash on you, and you get KO'ed. It gets annoying after a while, really.

Umm... that's kind of the point of the final smash, you know; break the smash ball, get into optimal striking position, activate. It's not like it's very hard to dodge them or get out of the way, or if you're close enough to hit the opponent and knock the smash ball out of them. And even if they do use it, most of them aren't guaranteed KOs unless you're hit by one at high percentage.

Zelda/Sheik's in particular only travels horizontally, so just stay off the same horizontal plane as them and they can't hit you with it. Not really a hard thing to do on most stages.

I suppose you got a good point there. As for Zelda/Sheik's, it's impossible to stay off the same horizontal plane, as they'll try to get you on the same plane just so they'll unleash the final smash.

And in a single picture, Sakurai pretty much validates some of that Takamaru hype from the weekend:

Image

Our newest assist trophy, performing the Multidirectional Pinwheel Knife Rook Attack, as named in the Miiverse update. There's some master trolling from Sakurai in there too, as not only is it written from Takamaru's point of view where he claims he's waited many years to be in Smash, but he even says "FYI, I'm an assist trophy" at the end, mockingly. Ice cold burn right there.

I admit that I'm somewhat disappointed that he isn't playable, but I'm glad he's still getting some representation here. And who knows, maybe he can pull a Little Mac next time and make the ninja leap onto the roster.

Wow! It's good to know they really are pulling out no stops with referencing older series (Maybe I was wrong about Krystal :ron: )
I hope this means Ayumi Tachibana or the Famicom Detecive Club are in this game in one way, shape or form! :edgey:

Paper Mario gets some representation with a new stage for the 3DS:

Image

Initially it's based on Sticker Star, the most recent title in the series for the 3DS. But then the stage folds in on itself and transforms, this time based on Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the Gamecube:

Image

Presumably there may be more transformations based on other Paper Mario games/locations.

I've always wanted something based on Paper Mario since the first one on the N64. And while I was initially conflicted when I saw the stage was based on Sticker Star, arguably the worst of the Paper Mario games, I was pleasantly surprised when it was in fact representing the whole series. The only issue now is what music will be used for the stage. The series has always had great tracks, but 3DS stages only get two...

Yes, that bothers me. She's second only to Meta Knight tier-wise, and if you play Brawl casually, she's definitely nothing to scoff at.

Since One Piece: World Red came out not too long ago, it would be pretty awesome to include one of the characters into the super smash game.

Sticker Star? What's that? Kind of weird that Nintendo would base a stage off of a game that doesn't exist

In all seriousness, I always thought Paper Mario would be a pretty good character for the series and he wouldn't be a mario clone. His hammer alone could provide an interesting new moveset

As for music, the battle theme could work nicely with a slight remix
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRXKF3lMh8k

Unfortunately, the only soundtrack I'm familiar with is TTYD's (and a few of SPM's) so I don't know what tracks could be incorporated from Sticker Star. I can't really think of other themes to use for the stage because while the music is good, it could sound too "intense" for lack of a better word (like Mario vs. King Bowser)

Though, it does seem weird that that's the scene from TTYD we transform to (the boat we're on for two minutes). Rogueport seems like the obvious choice...or the hall of the Thousand Year Door...or Glitzville...or Creepy Steeple...or the Moon. Hell, the stage would probably be the most logical choice for an arena

Another new 3DS stage today, based on N's castle from Pokémon Black/White/2:

Image

Sakurai says that since the game is very close to release, he doesn't have to describe the stage in much detail, though he does confirm that Zekrom and Milotic do appear here as well.

I must say, it's been a pretty good week so far in terms of content. A new assist trophy, two new stages and some detail on a previously-established new item. Can't wait for Friday. Also of note, there's going to be a Hyrule Warriors-focused Nintendo Direct on Monday, so of course the internet is going wild with speculation on whether we'll get some kind of tie-in update. Ganondorf returning seems to be the biggest bet, but I'm guessing it'll be an item or a stage at the most.

Rogueport seems like the obvious choice...or the hall of the Thousand Year Door...or Glitzville...or Creepy Steeple...or the Moon. Hell, the stage would probably be the most logical choice for an arena

As with all the other transforming stages shown so far, Sakurai likely hasn't shown all the transformations in the initial update, so it's likely we'll at least get two more based on the other PM games, and maybe one or two more from TTYD and/or one of the other games. Just as long as they include this guy somewhere, I'll be happy:

N's castle? That looks more like the Unova Pokemon league.

To me, it looked more like something out of Super Mario 64 Boo's Castle...

Since One Piece: World Red came out not too long ago, it would be pretty awesome to include one of the characters into the super smash game.

Would look like this

Not that it isn't fun to dream, but you know it'll never happen.

Why may I ask is it not fun to dream?

That's not what he said. He said it's fun to dream but it's not going to happen.

Also because not only is One Piece not a Nintendo Property, it's not even a video game (originally).

There's always JUMP Ultimate Superstars for the anime crowd which looks wonderful and whacky but alas Japanese only.
