Shulk is officially confirmed!

They also showed off a naked Shulk skin. Is that a reference to anything in Xenoblade?

You forgot the trailer! And the website! For shame!

Still not very surprising, given how good Xenoblade was. And hopefully this puts an end to the rumors of him being a straight up Marth clone.

I was watching the Nintendo Direct, I didn't know they'd upload the trailer that quickly! Still, he looks unique, so hopefully I can see if I like how he plays, and maybe it'll get me into the series?

Yep, looks like he's got a moveset based around changing the different modes of the Monado (his sword). Nice to see Dunban and Riki getting in on his final smash too (though really Dunban should be the one naked).

As for why he's naked? I dunno...perhaps it's just fanservice. You could unequip all your gear and be naked in the game or equip stuff that is practically naked (like swimming trunks). If it is just for fanservice...well...lets just say I hope Namco doesn't get to handle smash anymore, the Samus stuff and this just makes me uneasy.

Can't wait for an English trailer. Good to see Gaur Plains made it in, along with all of Xenoblade's AWESOME music and that they recognise "Back Slash" is the way to go XD

Here's the English trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtMlqTeS_JE#t=35

Also, they just announced they're remaking the first Xenoblade for 3DS, so I guess those that missed the first one can get into the series. (Maybe this is why they waited to announce him as a newcomer?)

Sakurai added an additional post today for Shulk:

Image

Shulk's sword, the Monado, has the ability to hit the opponents with its beam when activated, making an otherwise short/mid-range swordsman into a long range fighter as well:

Image

In addition, you can change the Monado Arts to not only suit your playstyle but to also throw your opponents off guard. Knowing how and when to change styles is the key to victory. Sakurai lists the arts as follows:

翔 (Jump): higher jumps, lower defense.
疾 (Speed): faster movement, weaker attacks.
盾 (Shield): higher defense, slower movement.
斬 (Buster): stronger attacks, weaker launch ability.
撃 (Smash): Stronger launch ability, weaker attacks, lower defense against launching.

That's nice but I'm like 50% of the way through it on Wii. I guess I'll see if it's a proper remake or an up-rez or just a port before I make any decision.

Also "It's Shulk Time", that's Reyn's line!

Naked Shulk? MWHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

I'm really surprised the Final Smash is Riki+Dunban. I'm not sad, cuz those are my two favorite characters, but... yesssss. I wonder if their costumes will change with Shulk's. That is to say, if you use Naked Shulk, then you get...

If you get Naked Dunban it'd be worth playing Naked Shulk.

Though in fairness Shulk can probably learn the skill that makes Naked Dunban worthwhile from him.

I'm pretty sure Shulk can, but why would you ever play anyone but Dunban as a dodge-tank?

But... dear god I hope the FS character costumes change with Shulk's.

I kind of wonder if it will always be Riki+Dunban or not. If it isn't, then I could see it either be completely randomized, or one of three pairs (Riki+Dunban, and then probably Reyn+Sharla and Melia+Seven maybe?)

I... don't actually really like the full roster from the leak that came out a bit ago. But it'd be worth it if the FS characters do indeed change costume with Shulk (and especially if it's always sets to Riki+Dunban)

Truly? Huh, didn't know that. Plus, you'd think Amy Rose, Big The Cat, Vector the Crocodile, Knuckles the Echidna, Espio the Chameleon, Charmy the Bee, Rouge the Bat, Omega something, Robotnik, or really most of the cast would provide a more unique move set.

Especially considering that Shadow and Sonic literally have the same move set in the games as far as I can tell, save for the one with guns.

Found the Nintendo Direct, but... I can't translate it. BP would know how to as far as I know here, and Hodou from AAO would as well, but he's probably asleep.

I might be going on assumption here, he was in the previous one and I swear I saw him appear in a trailer somewhere along the road.
Though his fighting style is slightly different from Sonic's in that he uses teleportation and energy attacks.

I have never played or even seen Xenoblade, so pardon my ignorance.

When I saw the whole "I can see the future" at the beginning there I was like "OK, how are they going to pull that shit off?" I looks more like a counter attack than anything, so that's clever, I think.

Actually Shadow and Sonic dont really have the same move set. Shadow has Chaos power Sonic doesn't.

Sonic does have chaos control. He uses it in both the game it's introduced (wherein Shadow supposedly dies), and then he even uses it in Dark Brotherhood.

Smash actually needs good playable characters, not an emo and overhyped expy of Sonic.

Only issue with that is the fact that third party companies only get one playable representative in Smash, and I highly doubt Sega would ever substitute Sonic with one of his own supporting characters. The most we'll probably see of them is in trophies, or in Shadow's case an AT. Though it is possible that some of them might show up on Sonic's stage. Maybe Eggman can be a stage boss, like the Yellow Devil for Mega Man's stage.

He was seen a couple of times during the Smash tournament at E3. I think he might have been in a Miiverse post as well, but I couldn't find that. In any case, there's definitely footage of him in the game.

As for Shadow himself, his differences from Sonic vary from game to game. In some he can teleport or use special attacks at will, while others state he needs at least one chaos emerald to be able to do that. Sometimes he's just as fast as Sonic, sometimes almost as fast. It really depends on the game and plot in question, at any rate.

Yeah... they really need to be more consistent than that. Then again, they rebooted the entire sonic universe in the comics about a year ago...

And I wans't suggesting Sonic be replaced, I merely thought he'd be an alternate costume, much like grid Lil' Mac, Wii Fit Male Trainer, or the like.

Yeah, part of me doesn't really like just taking Marth/Roy/Ike's counter and slapping it onto another character (like they did for Lucario), but Shulk's visions are a huge part of Xenoblade, and that seems like the only real way to pull it off.

I forgot to mention this earlier, but the Xenoblade music choices seem good too. I'd love it if they put in Engage the Enemy, but I'm not sure if it's really SSB-y.

I also couldn't 100% tell if the face at the end was Xord or Metal Face. But, given plot importance, probably Metal Face.

How could you forget that charming cockney accent? It's clearly Metal Face you slags.

Still I am actually fully ok for putting counters on more characters, so long as they are well justified. I think countering is a great tool for a character to have and I felt it gave the Fire Emblem crew a massive advantage over the others so giving them out a bit more would balance it provided it was justified.

Shulk seeing a vision of the future then countering the move? That's a GREAT way to do it.

Regarding Sonic and Shadow: Considering Shadow was artificially created with the means of using Chaos energy he can manipulate it better I generally assume minor distance teleportation and small energy blasts and waves are within his repertoire at BASE without any chaos emeralds.

I watched a walkthrough of Xenoblade, and I found the majority of the voice acting as well as the storyline to be very mediocre at best. Shulk being confirmed means little to me, but I'm happy for the countless people who wanted him in Super Smash Bros.

Well I'm no voice acting critic so I don't especially judge people on the quality of their voices. I'll notice when something is downright god awful and doesn't suit a character but other than that I don't really care about the voice acting in a game.

Also the gameplay was by and large one of the best bits about Xenoblade for me.
I hope in the upcoming remake they make some simple inventory and quest management systems though, always felt it got horribly cluttered.

I doubt that last one. Considering we're referring to them as 'Seven' instead of the given name, it's safe to say their identity is super-spoilers.
I know they've had moderately spoileriffic stuff in Smash before, but that seems to be a bit too far.

Spoiler:
Especially considering how much of an emotional impact it's meant to have.

So maybe it'll just randomly cycle through the non-spoileriffic ones (like you might end up with a Dunban/Reyn combo one time or Riki/Melia, etc.)

Like Pierre alluded to, I definitely think Xenoblade would be a lot more fun to play than to watch. You also didn't mention the music~

Also, I liked Xenoblade's story. It wasn't a super-interesting intellectual story like something in Ace Attorney or Zero Escape, but it was pretty nice for a JRPG imo.

Yeah, I know Seven is really spoiler-ific, but... they still could do it. Still...
Spoiler: Xenoblade
They could put Fiora in, but in her human form, like she is when she joins your party at the very beginning of the game. This way she's in there, but not in a spoilerific way.

I'd be totally fine with just Dunban and Riki, though.

Final Smash should include a quiz that gives a damage boost to the attack if answered correctly

As Ash said, he's quite the accomplished fencer.

However Villager isn't exactly a combatant character, they make him/her fight well enough.

Yeah but the villager has the excuse that in Animal Crossing you tend to have axes in the game.

There are plenty of characters that aren't from fighting games, that's no reason Layton couldn't be in SSB. (Although he's 3rd party, isn't he? I think he'd be a weird choice for the few 3rd party character slots that there are.)

Layton has swords *shrug* also that's only one tiny part of Villager's moveset, arguably not enough to base a whole combat style around and indeed from the looks of it they haven't based all of Villager's style around the fact they can use axes.

He's kind of third party, i don't think he's owned by Nintendo in Japan but he is in other regions.
