PFFT!?! Call that a shield? Listen buddy you need to take this huge shield here, and this huge lance here (which is also a cannon) and go full on Gun-lancer!

That said I'm thinking I'll try the new rod in the next game.

Failing that I could always be the first of my friends to ever make a dedicated gunner.

Hmm, not too bad. I think I did a lot better in the gunlance tutorial quest than the sword+shield tutorial quest xD (Although it could also be experience.)

The biggest issue is that you feel so slooooow. I miss being able to dodge in any direction, and it's tough to tell if your bullets/missiles/whatever are actually hitting...

Important thing to bear in mind is it's not actually a range weapon. You do have massive range for a melee user though and your shells do set damage (much like bombs) so enemies with absurdly high defence will really suffer. Watch for the fire on their body where you shoot, that's how you know you've hit.

As for the dodging? Sorry man but you checked that privilege at the door when you picked up the shield. The bright side is you don't have to dodge. Face your problems head-on behind the shield. Keep your guard up and attack. The little stab you do while blocking comes out quick so you can maintain blocking, it also lets you recover stamina in small amounts while still switching back to your guard.

Eventually once you start reaching master levels of skill with it you'll realise the little sidestep/backstep you can do with the weapon actually has invincibility frames. There's nothing more satisfying that seeing a tail swipe incoming and bobbing under it with a perfectly timed sidestep to continue the relentless assault.

Your Wyvern's Fire is also really fun to use and it's cooldown is about two minutes. The way of telling it's ready is different on each weapon but watch the side of the barrel, typically a cooldown compartment opens up to emit heat when it's recharging.

Huh... I pretty much played that fight as a ranged character xD

I saw the fire on the body a couple of times. But I also think I was hitting more often than that (since the monster's animations/attack pattern would change, which I think happens when it hits certain health thresholds).

It did seem like the shells ate through the weapon's sharpness really quickly. (And that was another thing, how do you use a whetstone on a gunlance?!)

Backstepping has super armor? Hmm... For the first half of the fight, I kept taking damage because I tried to backstep the monster's attack, but kept getting hit. Eventually I tried standing put with the shield up, and it actually worked! (Which kinda surprised me, because the shield in the sword+shield only seemed like it was able to block only the smallest attacks.)

Also, I couldn't use Wyvern's Fire for the last third of it ._. I used it two or three times, and then it just... stopped working. I know it wasn't on cooldown, because the animation for it on that weapon was really obvious. ...I was probably just inputting the command wrong. Because darn it, monster hunter ;_;

Full disclosure I've not played 4G yet. If they have made modifications to the funlance I can't help you. To answer some questions:

Yes, funnily enough a weapon that explodes needs pretty regular maintenance. As such it gets sharpened often. (If whetstones on gunlances are weird for you, think about why on earth you would need to sharpen a hammer?).

Backstepping doesn't give you super armour (which would imply you take damage but don't flinch), it essentially functions like a dodge, you have less frames than a standard dodge roll but they are there. Frames where the attack will pass through you. It's difficult to do and it'll come with time. Don't rely on it.

As for shields, yes the Sword and Shield is designed to be a middle ground of offence and defence with high mobility. As such it has a pitiful shield. As a gunlance (same rule applies to regular lance) user your first line of defence is the sizable shield on your arm. If you want to go even further, make armour with guard up or guard +1 (or 2). By working your guard that way, you won't even get knocked back when a monster hits you and you take less 'chip' damage and lose less stamina.

The downside of guarding is it won't hold up to a relentless assault from a monster (unless you are using dash juice or something for unlimited stamina). If both your partners are down and the monster you are up against can attack quickly or from multiple angles then you might be in a pickle as your stamina will only hold out so long. Moving with your guard up and using your counterattack are slight ways to restore your stamina while remaining defensive.

As for the Wyvern's fire thing....for me it was always (hold block) push both X and A simultaneously and it locks it in pretty well. You can even combo it into some attacks. The third thrust combo involves you slamming the gunlance over your head into the monster like a hammer. While the gunlance is down you can push X and A to go straight into the motion for Wyvern's fire. Only trouble is it's quite slow even if it has a big hitbox, a more mobile and unpredictable monster might give you the slip.

Okay, so the gunlance is pretty neat... I brought it on real mission, and it was supposed to just be a gathering mission, but then a big monster showed up so I killed it. During the tutorial, I didn't know/realize you could attack while guarding (since you can't with the sword+shield)... My god, that's so useful!

Also, I don't know if the areas are the same in 4 and 4G, but the second area is awesomeeeeeeeeeee

Hmm I'm pretty sure you could do AN attack while guarding with the sword and shield but it was just a simple one-hit vertical slice and pretty weak since the SnS is all about multiple attacks.

You are open to attack when you stab the monster while guarding but it's a very small window of opportunity so you really do increase your chances.

I CAN'T believe that people need to create topics to discuss, in length, and explain exactly who/what Lumina from Lightning Returns is. Come on, guys, sure it isn't flat out stated in the first five minutes, but if you simply watch all the cutscenes, it's practically shoved in your face AND SAID who/what she is! ...seriously, how stupid are these people that they need Lumina to be EXPLAINED to them?

Well in my experience the XIII series is absolutely terrible at explaining everything forever...except to you.

I can agree that maybe XIII explained things in a way that are easier to understand if the datalog is read, though they can also be understood if you just view the scenes and think along a bit yourself. But LR really flat out TELLS you who Lumina is during the Final Day, what her role was and everything about her.

Spoiler: Lumina in LR
During the Final Day, Yule appears and TELLS you that Lumina is not just a cast-off part of Light's emotions, weakness and vulnerability that she shoved aside when her parents died, so she could become a good adult and parent-substitute to Sera when their parents died, but that she also serves as a body-shell for Sera's soul, so it wouldn't get lost in the Chaos. Not to mention that Lumina becomes one with Light on-screen, as a pivotal moment. You'd THINK people would know "Ooooh Lumina is Light's repressed weaker self!" at that point at the latest and DIDN'T need it to be explained in a double post, each post about 500 words long.

Failed my first quest ;_;

I was fighting a bug monster thing, and the problem was that it kept on going to sleep next to a wall... I couldn't/can't figure out how to wake it =\ So I'd just need to wait for it to wake up, and by then it had healed a good amount of health, so when I damaged it again it just went back to sleep. After repeating that a few times I just got fed up with it and gave up. Any tips, Pierre? ~_~

EDIT: Posted on a Japanese MH message board too. Hopefully I was comprehensible, and they actually answer/help... and I hope people actually go to the one I posted on ^^"

EDIT2: One guy said I should use a knife to wake it up... How? ._. When I completed the subquest, I got 5 throwing knives, but the bug was too high up for me to hit it with... I tried climbing the wall and using it there, but it just threw them outwards. (I only got 5, so I couldn't experiment with them too much...)
Pierre help meeeee :pizza2:

EDIT3: did it, yaaay. Apparently when you're climbing walls, you can use X to swing a knife... ^^"

Sorry man the site was down for the entirety of yesterday so I couldn't have helped.
Not that I'd have much advice as is. I know for this game they really wanted to focus on a vertical angle, so attacking things on walls is brand new, you can now also climb monsters and rodeo them while stabbing em I hear. However it's all new so I wouldn't have known about the wall stabbing thing.

Though as a tip, I'm pretty sure monsters take triple damage on the first hit while they are asleep (essentially the wake up shot). Wyvern's Fire + That will probably ensure the monster's fate considering that it'll only sleep on low health.

I guess (assuming the moveset is roughly the same) what I used to hit vertical targets with the gunlance was a vertical swing. If you push X and A together from neutral stance you will thrust the lance upwards in a vertical swing. You can fire a shell at the end of this to get the most range in a vertical direction out of...well any weapon excluding actual guns I think.

In The Sims 3 news, one of my Sims almost died on the job yesterday. She was at work when I received a notice that she was wondering why it had suddenly gotten dark. Luckily, I knew what that meant, so I was able to get her away in time. Some onlookers got scorched (but not killed) when the meteorite hit, but the rabbithole my Sim worked in was completely unharmed. I'll have to look up the odds of a meteor coming down when none of my Sims are doing anything to increase the odds. I know it's extremely rare, but I'm hoping I can find the exact numbers.

Never happened to any of my sims, so... huh? That can happen?
I know I had some times where I moved my Sims into a house in Sims 3 and got a message of being able to pick the scenario of meteroites having hit previously.

It can, indeed, happen. I've never heard about a house having been struck by a meteorite being an option when you move your Sims in (though I have had the occasional ancient burial ground challenge, which I've always rejected).

It's a scenario thingy that can happen randomly, I guess. The only two I saw was being previously hit by meteorites (which can sell for nice money) or full of ghosts. Though they thankfully give you an option to get help with those.

I'm thinking of getting some 3DS/Wii U games for Christmas. These are the ones I'm thinking of

-Luigi's Mansion 2
-Kid Icarus: Uprising
-Fire Emblem: Awakening

Does anyone have any comments or other recommendations?

Never played Luigi's Mansion.

The other two are excellent. The controls in Kid Icarus take some getting used to, but once you do it plays fine.

Luigi's Mansion 2 was a great sequel to the first game which I loved alot.

Here are some suggestions

-One Piece:World Red
-Majora's mask (Next year)
-Ocarina of Time 3D
-Super Smash 3DS
-Link between worlds.

Ocarina of Time 3DS is actually NOT worth it. It's basically the same game that was released in 1998, only they fixed the issue with the water temple in that you can equip boots like an item and don't have to open the menu all the time. Seriously, that's it. Unless you have never, ever, ever played Ocarina of Time beforehand, buying the 3DS version is really NOT worth it.

If you want some simulation games, I would suggest to buy Harvest Moon or Rune Factory 4 for the 3DS. Or buy Theatrhythm, if you like rhythm games.

PS: Did I just get told that RF4 DID come out in Europe?! :adrian:

I'm going to agree with this--just buy it on the Wii (U) virtual console if you want it.

I totally forget what you have and haven't played, so I'm just going to throw out Bravely Default.

Yeah but what if he just wants a game to play while he is on the go or maybe he doesn't have a Wii U so you can't just agree with Cat without knowing all the facts.

Well Ocarina isn't a game I'd pick to play on the go. I certainly did it, at times, but only when I went to the large mall on the other side of the city, so I knew I had a good close-to-an-hour of a train ride. And you definitely do not want to play Ocarina on the go, begin a dungeon, then stop and save when you're halfway through and when you start up, you're back at the entrance of the dungeon and have to walk back.

That's fair, Bravely Default is more of a FF game than FF13 and it's offspring were.

Also Danny it's not that there's nothing wrong with not liking FF it's that your reasons about it are way messed up and unfair.

I can already dispel your assumption, as I like both old pre-V and post-V Final Fantasy Games.

XIII may be a FF game in name but for me it's name alone.

By your argument I could release a COD-style first person shooter, call it Final Fantasy XVI and then that's Final Fantasy.

And as I said: just cause you didn't like the game doesn't mean it isn't a Final Fantasy game. (Shit, if we went by THAT logic, I'd say the only FF games in existence are FF V, VI, X-Minus Tidus, XIII and LR)

Whenever did I claim that it wasn't a FF on grounds of me liking it? Reverse that argument. Perhaps it's because it's not a FF (to me) that I don't like it (in addition to a long list of other things about it).

Reiterating your point doesn't make it more compelling or believable.

Ugh another FF arguement between you two. The person simply asked for a simple list of games to buy and you two turn it into this.

Ya I'm still using it~

A japanese website recommended Hi-Metal (I think that's the English name) Armor as a good set for low-level gunlance, but I can't build it yet, and I can't find any info on when it will get unlocked at the blacksmith, so I asked about that... although it looks like I'm just getting ignored ^^"

From past experience, here's some good skills to gun for.

Guard Up - Gunlance has a great block, probably only outdone by the standard lance if not equal but some attacks are unblockable. A lot of beam attacks and huge ones just can't be blocked and with your limited movement it often means you don't have the time to get out of the way. Guard Up will allow you to block attacks previously considered unblockable.

Guard +1/+2 - These are all fantastic, as you upgrade this you'll get less knockback from attacks and you'll lose less stamina from attacks.

ESP - This one is super important later on. It's a skill that essentially means you will never 'bounce' from a enemy due to sharpness or the strength of their armour. Now Gunlances have notoriously low sharpness, and burn through that sharpness quickly. This should mean they bounce often but the problem is when you bounce as a gunlance user, being up close this leaves you wide open for attack Ideally you'll be keeping your guard up and using your counter-stab to get quick consistent damage even when the monster is aggressive. If you bounce your guard drops entirely and you reset to neutral position (not blocking position like you do with the counter stab). It's something I picked up from experience, and at G rank you don't have the luxury of taking that many hits when you bounce so ESP is fantastic.

Idk... I find skills really hard to manage xD I just want to get Hi-Metal since that's supposed to be good or w/e (according to that site), and then I can focus on figuring out my own good set...
