I believe Edgeworth takes the stairs to the courtroom, hospital, prosecutor offices, etc. Every day. This is partially confirmed in GK-2.

Oh, and... Zwarri! Apollo Justice is also female; the tender age of 66 - and here I thought that he looked like a lil' kid. Much like his brother, Klavier Gavin is female, three years older than he claims that he is - runs in the family. Diego Armando is male, 46 years old, while Godot doesn't have a face thanks to his pesky visor. Simon Blackquill, though, he was completely honest. 28 years old, male.

The reason Matt Engarde specifically requested Phoenix as his attorney was because Will Powers wouldn't stop talking at Global Studios about this
"Amazing attorney called Mr. Phoenix Wright" and how he "Beat the best prosecutor in the state" and "Won my lost-cause case".
He probably even talked about how he was inviting him and his "Assistant" to the ceremony and there he made a back up plan with Shelly knowing Maya would be there to kidnap and when, in-case things didn't work out as planned.
