And I'll always be an Umbreon person. I only have a Sylveon because it would probably be the only fairy type I will ever raise. But besides that, I will always try to have an Umbreon during any play through of any pokemon game, unless it's a Gen 1 game.

Maybe I'll do a Y run-through where I don't really collect Pokémon until Route 10, then get Eevees and use their various evolutions. That could work.
But I'm trying to see if I can get a shiny eevee off Route 10. But it's so boring...

Friendship I find, is tedious to do late game, but if you have a Pokemon that'll level up by it, you should get it to evolve pretty early.
There are various ways to level it up:
Walking around a lot (early gens, every 256 steps increase it a smidge, whereas gen 5 and 6, they changed it to 128)
Holding a Soothe Bell (increases rate at which friendship levels up)
Getting Massages
Using Vitamins (ex: Zinc, Iron, etc.)
Having it in a luxury ball (same as soothe bell, and can be stacked with soothe bell)
Leveling them up in battle
In short, walk around a lot, give 'em a soothe bell and daily massages. When their friendship is high enough, they'll evolve on level up.
A lot of this will happen early game naturally, but the reason why I find it tedious late game is because I'll want my Pokemon to evolve early on to learn moves, but because it's so late, the only effective way is to really walk a lot because I don't want to level. I like it early though because, say for example, I catch a Zubat early on. When I get through the normal progression of the game, by the time I get Golbat, it'll evolve again because the happiness is high enough.
And if you want to check your happiness progression, there's an NPC in every game who will tell you something. If you can get them to say something along the lines of "it couldn't love you anymore that it does now", then it should be ready to evolve.
I will say, Espeon is a very good Pokemon to use. It's basically Alakazam lite, so if you can't get an Alakazam for trade, Espeon makes up for it very well.

It's a bit more expensive this way cause Gamestop has the physical copy for only 40€ instead 45€ but, this way, I don't have to carry multiple cartridges around and repeatedly switch.

Some animations are still missing frames, but it's a lot smoother than the iOS. The only thing is backgrounds aren't 3D. Since the game is only 35€ right now... only the package is gonna be sent registered, so I had to pay extra for that and no, I saw no option to send it without being registered... so cost more than I expected, but I fortunately still had enough to do so.
