Well, I've gotten a few weird looks, but I've never had any outright comments about my gaming preferences. On the other hand, they gave me a dumb-ass look when I asked for an application at Gamestop, and then claimed they were "out"... I got the feeling that was a lie, 'cause I always see a huge stack when other people ask. And my female friend had tried applying there months prior, and was told she'd get called back, but then of course a couple of cocky guys (who applied after her) got hired instead. Ugh, chauvinistic pigs. Oh well, that might be an isolated incident.

I'm not. That's what bothers me most when people are like "here, you grew boobs once upon a time, now you must accept that your destiny belongs in the land of pink things and fluffy kittens." Not that I would object to fluffy kittens aside from the fact that I'm allergic to cats.. And a few pink things are acceptable. But seriously, if a guy came in and asked for a white DS, I don't think they'd be like "Nope, all out. BUT WE HAVE PINK! :D"

If they did though, that would totally gain awesome points for treating their customers equally. Speaking of which...



..Yet another reason I'll drive 20 minutes out to the mall to buy games from EB rather than shop at the Gamestop down the block from my university.

I had to go to Gamestop today to get a present for a friend. The guys working there were very nice and didn't once seem to take my gender into consideration; it's the first time in a while that I've felt really comfortable in a game store. I was pleasantly surprised.

(For the record, my DS Lite is Onyx. I withheld from buying the older model because I was waiting for them to release a black DS. :P )

I can hardly turn a corner in the gaming world without bumping into a female player, and the thing is girl gamers have been around since... well, the beginning. It's hardly a new development - multiplayer games like Quake had a visible female following, too. I wonder what, exactly, it would take for the public at large (and the established hardcore) to accept female gamers into the fold?

On this note, Nintendo is hardly helping the image. As much as they want to include more nontraditional people in the consumer base, people seem to latch on to the idea that "casual" or "non" games are the standard fare of girl gamers. (Statistically true, however)

Remember, however, that a massively popular title by the name of The Sims was perhaps the first game to achieve a female majority in its player base.

Hmmm? I don't think I ever noticed anything. The game stores in my area all have at least two women working there. I don't think they are suprised to see me, either. I go to them a lot. They even recognize me. I didn't even know that some of that stuff still happens. I must be the most oblivious person EVER!!

Whenever I go into stores, I always feel like whoever works there is staring at me for some reason. And unfortunately, the games stores I go to are small so I can't even hide behind shelves. -sniffles-

If I go to ask questions about anything, they look at me like I shouldn't be asking or I am odd for asking....I don't ask anything weird.

Also whenever I go to stores, they only ask me if I need help finding something or if I need help with anything....they never ask my brother which I have always found to be odd.

Oh, and I have a pink DS lite too~. I really don't like the color, but I bought it basically to make fun of me having one, and so people ask me why the heck I have it. I find it fun~

Don't feel bad about being short Croik. I'm 18, Male and pretty tall for my age and I don't look 18 years old.

I once got asked at work by a Police Women saying "Are you old enough to be working here?". I was thinking, "WTF!", of course I'm older enough, I'm 18". <_<

I wasn't allow to buy 'Mortal Combat' for the Wii because I forgot to bring my ID card and I was a bit irritated because my parents weren't around to buy it for me. Had to wait a week before I went back again with ID.

And when I went to see a 18 film with my friends, I went to get the tickets completely forgetting about my ID, they asked for my age and ID and then remembered I didn't have it. My other friends were fine getting in and two of mates weren't even asked for ID. So my friends had to wait for mum to bring my ID card to me.

The one thing I don't get is I'm tall for my age but people still think I'm 16/17. But it is kind of amusing. I like the fact when I catch buses they ask 'Are you 18?" and I reply "Of course not!" and the bus ticket cost less.




I'm not a fan of pink much but I think it doesn't really matter what colour girls and boys like. One of my male friends has a Pink PSP and I think he is rather brave and cool for having a pink one since his favourite colour is pink and it shows boys can like the colour pink! And no he’s not gay; just because a guy likes pink doesn’t make them gay. He gets a couple of stupid comments from people but we just tell them to "F*** Off!". If he wants to have that colour, he can.




I remember when I was buying a GBA Micro in 'Game' and the lady asked me what colour I wanted? I asked for ever a blue or green one. She went and checked and came back to say they had run out of those colours but they had Silver or Pink.

So I replied "So much choice, I'm not sure which to pick". The lady just laughed. I was nearly serious about getting the pink one but decided to go with the traditional silver one instead. If I had got the pink one, I could imagine a lot of comments, mainly from my brother asking why I picked pink! XD

I love looking in Gamestation since I'm a sucker for Retro stuff. I only hated Gamestation once when they only stock copies of Sonic Riders for only PS2 and Xbox. <_< I was not happy! Lucky, Game had a couple of copies in.


To the topic at hand, I didn’t realise girls get looks or comments when in game stores. I work at Cash Converters on Saturdays and the shop does sell second hand PS2, Xbox, Gamecube etc games. When a girl/girls want to buy one of the games, I don't give them looks or say anything sexist about them buying a game. In fact I've seen two 18-20 year old girls buy an 18 game.

In Game I've seen a few girls come in a look and even buy games that you won't expect girls to buy. I just think it’s great that girls like games and if they like games, they can. It doesn't shock me at all about girls being in game shops and the people that work there never seen to give or ask strange questions too much.

I may not be a girl but I once had people given me strange looks when buying 'Super Princess Peach'. It was actually for one of my female friends who asked me to get it for her since her parents don't allow her to order games offline and there are no game shops where she works.

I thought it wouldn't be too much trouble getting a game that was targeted at girls. It’s not like I was buying 'Bratz'. :P Boy was I wrong. I went into 'Game' and picked up a copy and had a look at the back. A few customers and two of the staff there gave me funny looks as if to say "Why is an 16 male looking at girly game!" Even one idiot came up to me and said "Your surly aren’t going to buy that game!" I just replied "So what If I want to buy it, just because the box is pink doesn't mean guys can't buy it!"

Even when I brought it to the counter, one of the male workers said "You do realise this game is aimed at girls right?" I'm thinking "I don't give shit if its not aimed at boys, I can buy what I want!"

This put me off asking for a release date for 'Totally Spies 2 Under Cover' for DS since I'm a fan of the series even though it’s aimed at girls, I still like the show. The previous GBA game was great and I was looking forward to the DS sequel. In the end, 'Game' didn't stock any copies and that really pissed me off. I couldn't be bothered to order it online as there were better games I could buy. But then my local 'Game' shop has been doing this too a few games such as Metal Slug Anthology.

I actually just got 'Totally Spies 2 Under Cover' in a shop called 'Choices' three days ago in a town I don't visit often. I was a bit worried what people would think about me buying a girly game but to my surprise the lady at the cash till didn't ask any questions about why I wanted a girly game and just said "Enjoy playing the Games" after I paid. It may have been because I also brought 'Elite Beat Agents' as well that she didn't seem to be bothered asking. Even a teenage boy and girl behind me didn't give me any strange looks.

To finish off, I think people don't expect girls to buy games or be in game shops because people say girls don't play games. It like girls can't play Rugby which I think is sexist. When I was doing sports in Year 10, we had to choose ever Rugby or Aerobatics. The girls had no choice but to pick Aerobatics while the boys had a choice. Due to my hatred against Rugby and me being a skinny person, I picked Aerobatics and turned out to be the only male who picked Aerobatics. A few of the girls asked why I picked Aerobatics and I just told them "I hate Rugby". If I can get out of it, I will. :P

What pisses me off is when you like something which is only based for your opposite sex, people tend to give you strange looks or say horrible stuff to you because its not naturally.

So what? If a girl goes in a game shop, cool. If I want to buy games that is not based on my age or gender, so what? I'm not a fan of 18 rated games like Gear of Wars and just because I'm male and I’m old enough to play the game doesn't mean I have to!

I'm just going to finish with "I'm 18, I'm male, I like Totally Spies and I can play any types of games I want!"

I honestly don't see why some people think girls playing video games is a taboo.

When the video game industry started out, systems such as Atari and NES were considered the entertainment systems of every household. Men and women alike enjoyed playing these games that you were able to interact and control on a tv screen.

My mom for one enjoyed playing games such as Pac-man, Tetris and Zoop. And she also liked to play Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon on PSX.

My three older sisters would surround the tv in the livingroom playing Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Sonic etc.

I grew up with video games all my life, Duck Hunt/Mario Bros. being the very first I laid my eyes upon, so I don't consider it strange for girls to like them.
And I wouldn't understand why girls would get strange looks when walking into a game shop. Video games are just a form of entertainment like movies and music. They're fun. And don't "girls just wanna have fun"? *shot for lame insertion of a song lyric*

It's funny how they made a big deal years ago about Mortal Kombat being too violent for kids. However I played it all the time and I'm definitely not a violent person (unless someone attacks me first, then I kick the shit out of them).

To be honest, i think there are people who expect girls who play games to play games like that Pippa Funnel game ( I'd change my name) or Barbie games. Which is so crap because...how many people play these games? To be honest, i prefer RPGs, platformers (Ape Escape player here) and action games but that isn't weird cause there are some of us here that like GTA (i don't cause it's confusing).

The list of "manly" games i have are:

Not a lot but these are games that i adore.

The other day, at an anime shop, I saw someone playing a real-time strategy game that had lots of explosions and general mayhem... (Kinda looked fun!) So I asked someone sitting nearby what it was, and he said, "It's a guy-game."

I find the people in the stores are usually very polite, and usually treat me just like anyone else. Especially as my knowledge of games verges on obsessive/encyclopedic. XD I finally, finally got to buy Ace Attorney a few weeks ago and played through it in like five days, and had a conversation about it, the upcoming third game, and the fourth game that's still japan-only with the guy at the counter, who was a big PW fan. He didn't seem surprised at all.
The guys at my school, on the other hand, are always pretty startled. But they're usually more interested than sexist. Oddly enough, the only two times I've ever run into sexism are while playing Mario Kart 64. Even playing Halo 2 for the first time against a room containing sixteen guys, they were polite and helpful about it. (I came in sixth. Not bad, as I'd played Xbox maybe once before and Halo 2 never, I think. xD)

But overall, I think the idea of female gamers is becoming more accepted, if not yet commonplace.

I get more "strange looks" on GameFAQS than I do in stores-- and I get called Alan a lot, because they assume I'm a guy because I'm hanging out on the Metal Gear Solid boards. ^^;; (I've also been told I can't understand the male mentality and friendship because I think Otacon is gay as hell for Snake. >.> Um, I'll tell my boyfriend that he doesn't understand guys, then, since he agrees with me about Otacon's crush.)

In stores, they pretty much take me in stride, whether I'm bemoaning the fact that all their WoW stuff is Alliance or bweeing over MGS2: Substance... though I have gotten strange looks when I start arguing with my brother over the merits of the games we're looking at. XD;;
