The fans asked, and asked, and asked some more, and now the day is finally here: the Ace Attorney anime adaptation, Gyakuten Saiban: Sono Shinjitsu, Igiari! starts airing today, April 2nd!

In advance of the show getting on the road, here's all you need to know about the series!

WHAT IS IT?

The anime is an adaptation of the first two games in the series, Ace Attorney and Justice for All, and as such shows Phoenix's early days an attorney, as well as a bevy of other familiar faces. While the anime will primarily be a straight adaptation, Takumi has commented that there will be original or expanded elements, particularly pertaining to Nick's past that they couldn't show in the game itself.

WHO'S MAKING IT?

The anime is being produced by A-1 Pictures (Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online II), directed by Ayumu Watanabe and with music by Kaoru Wada. The main cast includes Yuuki Kaji as Phoenix, Masashi Tamaki as Miles Edgeworth, Aoi Yuuki as Maya Fey, Chie Nakamura as Mia Fey, Masami Iwasaki as Dick Gumshoe, and Tooru Nada as Larry Butz. Voice actors for Franziska and Pearl have yet to be announced.

In addition, series creator Shu Takumi serves as advisor to the scripts.

WHEN AND WHERE CAN I WATCH?

If you're outside Japan, Crunchyroll will be officially streaming/subbing and near-simulcasting the series! You can check their page for the series here. Episodes will be made available immediately to premium members; free users will be able to view them a week after the original air date.

If you're in Japan, the show airs at 5:30 PM JST, Saturdays on YTV. Check your local listings for details!

ANYTHING ELSE I SHOULD KNOW?

Sure! First off, we have a dedicated subforum for the anime where folks can pick apart the latest episodes and chat about the series in general. Once an episode has aired, stop by to chat things over with fellow AA fans.

If you're watching through Crunchyroll, do note that as these are subs, Crunchyroll is opting to use the Japanese names for the characters/places by default. C-R member Rubia has put together a detailed list of Japanese<->English names if you need a refresher! Update: the English names are also available in the alternate English subtitle track.

If you're watching live in Japan, keep your eyes peeled during commercial breaks; special commercials for Ace Attorney 6 will be airing throughout the season.

Speaking of the season - Takumi recently stated that the anime will run for about half a year, which sounds like it will be 2 cours, or 26 episodes.

GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!

Sure thing. In about five and a half hours from this post, you'll be able to watch episode one, "The First Turnabout", right here on Crunchyroll.

We'll keep you all updated with previews and summaries for future weeks as the season progresses. Have fun, everyone!

Been up all night. #WorthIt (Didn't fall asleep until like 6 AM yesterday so I figure why not just stay up for the premiere tonight too).

Feels kind of full circle watching it on the CrunchyRoll Wii U app, considering Wii Eshop was how I got into the series. :-D

Post viewing edit: Wow that went by fast, proves how engaged I was. When the intro hit the surreal feeling of finally having an actual AA anime hit me. Loved the embellishments they added to :sahwit: damage and breakdown animations. Looking super forward to what they do with the rest.

Kind of annoyed that Crunchyroll doesn't stream it inside of Asia but outside of Japan. So close yet so far. What are my options here :yogi:

German subs use English names.

It was pretty fast, even for the first case. Especially from "the time is wrong by two hours" to "You're the murderer Sawhit!". Phoenix figured it out in like a second!

Apparently the alternative English subtitle track does use the localized names.

It was great, but it sucks I can't toggle the alternative subtitle on with the PS4-app.

Exactly my thoughts too. I loved seeing an Ace Attorney anime, and I do think they did a great job, especially with characterization. But pacing is a bit of an issue (partly due to needing to cram one case into 20 minutes and 20 seconds) and makes all dramatic and/or tense moments a lot less so. I wanted to see Phoenix rack his brain to even make that leap in logic you pointed out. I think this anime will benefit from having some tense inner monologue from Phoenix. Perhaps we'll see that in future episodes?

The anime feels a little corny to me. I was hoping it'd have a little more serious tone, and then go into the more lax things later on, but it's sort of structured like regular episodics (i.e, no hiding Mia's death at the end there).

To be fair, the game didn't hide it either. They pretty much took the teaser dialog verbatim from the game.

Yeah that's true. I guess episode 1's not really the best to go off of. And yeah, they never really introduced Mia that much in the episode, but I was reading comments of first time viewers saying "Why'd she have to die!? I was just starting to like her!"

This is probably a stupid question but was it ever stated how frequent each episode airs? I'm assuming it's once a week like most other anime episodes, but just wanted some official confirmation.

My personal thoughts about the anime so far:
- idk why but I felt that Phoenix was really awkwardly drawn, like how he was in PL vs AA.
- I liked the testimony visualisation thing; I hope they'll do that for all future episodes.
- Like what others have stated above, Phoenix figuring out everything so quickly felt very unreal to me, though I can understand the producers' time constraints having to fit everything into half an hour
- I'm disappointed that Winston Payne doesn't have a high-pitched screechy voice like how he was in the games :(

Overall a good start to the AA anime series and I really hope it will help draw more people into the AA games and the series in general.

Half an hour would have been better for the pacing. This is just a 22 minutes show.

Omg, Phoenix is on the left side of the courtroom. Ruined forever!

Seriously though, not bad for a first episode. It actually cleared up a complaint one of my friends had about the first case, namely that it's kind of a leap in logic to assume Cindy took the clock with her to Paris when you don't even find out that Larry made the clock for her until after the case is over. As Phoenix points out, it's kind of bulky to take with you unless it holds some sentimental value. Here, they showed a picture of her in Paris with the clock, so everything's cleared up.

Fixed that for you. =P

You know, I hadn't even realized Phoenix was on the 'wrong' side of the courtroom. I wonder if it was a conscious choice or an oversight...

20 minutes and 20 seconds if you don't count the OP, ED and preview! That's quite short to fit the whole case in...

^ I think it is the oversight and a mistake. During the whole courtroom shot, Phoenix stands on the right side with his side-kick while the respective prosectutor would stand on the left side. The close-ups are mainly from the Judge's angle.

The live action movie did the same positioning as the game.

I enjoyed this episode. Coming from A-1 Pictures I wished for something high quality in terms of animation since I just finished their anime from last year recently (Your Lie in April). I enjoyed the homage to the games with the music and the testimony as well, I hope to see more of that since it really worked really well.

EDIT: Will we get threads for each respective episode?

Very likely a concious choice. The thing is: the games never made any sense visually in that respect. They have an establishing shot of the courtroom from behind the defendant, but then move to a close-up taken from the judge's side. That makes for a very bad flow and I know a lot of good mangaka/directors try to avoid going from one angle, to a close-up from a completely different angle in action-oriented scenes, as it really messes up the flow of the visuals (you should some of the analyses of Toriyama's action manga, they are really pleasing to the eye in terms of flow). If they had kept it as in the games, it simply wouldn't be logical to the viewers back home (especially those who have never played the games).

Compare to the live-action film: they kept the correct sides, but that's also why you see mostly see shots of Phoenix looking towards the left. The shot from the judge's side doesn't make any sense in the context of the courtroom scene.

Fun fact, Paris has a replica of the Statue of Liberty. Plus, the game said she was in Paris (At least in the localization).

I'll admit the anime states she was in New York, but it could still fit the other way. :luke-side:

That's true. I actually thought that the witness stand was right in front of the judge's seat the first time I played the games. When I finally noticed in one of the establishing shots that it wasn't like that, I was very confused.

The thing is that during the gameplay, we see all from the judge's perspective, but then we are getting constantly shots of the judge himself from the opposite angle. That's pretty counter intuitive because, since the judge appears in the same perspective as the witness, it looks like he's right behind them, and that's what I assumed at first, even if it wouldn't make any sense if the witnesses were actually giving their back to the judge.

Remember to look at the speed pan shots too. Those make the viewpoint all too clear. "Conveniently", I don't think there were any in the episode.
