Mario was never meant to be all that extreme. Which is why he was fun...mario 64 was odd, but in an endearing way. So was sunshine. They better keep that.

He's not in danger of becoming "srsbsnss."
See: Super Mario Galaxy.

Smash Bros. isn't Mario's flagship/canon game anyways, as much as it isn't other character's games. It's an all-stars variety show. It's already been explicitly stated that Smash isn't a world of "crossovers" but rather its own universe, where the characters exist as trophies.

Can these pseudo-characters develop individually, seperate from the canon entities they represent and parallel? Yes. But do they have any effect on the original canon character or series? No. Smash is an alternate universe, built on the concept of play and having fun. It's not like the trophies particularly like getting punched in the face, but it's a gruesome fact of life that they will just have to deal with. If you watch the original American commercial for Super Smash Bros on the N64, you will see this juxtaposition of cartoon mischief and brute violence.

In any case, I think Samus has taken the "maturation" process exceedingly well. ;)

My guess is that it's just an easter egg and/or taunting us.

I just looked at the image on the site, it looks nothing like the version you have posted, even the blurry one. While this is admittedly fun, I think this is like seeing Bowser and co in those clouds.

Indeed, it's fake. There's no way it could show up so clearly after enlarging the pic. Plus it's not there... just a plain blue screen. Still, it's a nice idea... though, I don't think Nintendo is that sneaky.

Mario's spent the best part of twenty years running across strange landscapes, leaping inpossible distances, battling deranged turtles and going toe to toe with a giant fire-breathing lizard.

He's been a badass snce before Cloud was still a doodle in Tetsuya Nomura's artbook.

Perhaps I stated it wrong, here's the cover to Super Mario World.

Note the happy-ish plumber. Having a bast etc.

Now, here's Sunshine Mario

Image

Note he looks like he's looking for a fight. This rendition of Mario seems to be the way they're trying to portray him. Even in Mario Party for goodness sake. Just look at the title screen of Mario Party 8 and you'll see what I'm getting at.

I was trying to find the old iconic picture of the 'Mario Smile' where he's pointing upwards. I can't even remember the last time I really saw the 'Jolly' Mario of years ago.

The Smoke Ball seems alright, though by the pictures it doesn't seem to obscure all that much. Unless you can see the silluettes clearly, in which case sword fights would be rather cool.

As for Mario, I wouldn't say he's all too different than he was back in the days of SMB; just a guy trying to save his girl from having to mother more kids for a giant fire-breathing humanoid turtle, sometimes freeing an oppressed kingdom/society in the process. I suppose that makes him appear more hard-edged, but that's mostly due to the differences in the capabilty to express emotions in characters between the early 90's and today.

...That, and I'm sure you'd be pissed off if several different people tried to steal your romantic interest away hundreds of times over the span of twenty years. :godot:

It doesn't look like it really obscures anything, so I get the feeling you won't have any problem playing while it's active.

To be honest it's kind of a 'you wasted a day on this why...?' update.

So they can stretch this shit as far as possible and make all the big announcements right before launch. :redd:

But that's the inverse of how good hype should proceed--if you announce everything 'big' right before launch it won't have the same effect. The Single Player mode they revealed and Ike are good examples of the hype machine working great.

Anyway I just don't really see the point to the item, is my thing. It looks like it could have just been a stage effect, since as far as the screens show, it doesn't seem to really obscure much, if anything. (If you look at the screens provided, for instance, the smoke really seems like more of a decoration than a distraction.)

Although, that does make me ask one other thing--are these screens of 'in game' play, or are they crafted for the site? I've always sort of wondered if they are CG shots--it could be possible that if it were so, the smoke in 'real game' so to speak would have more of an effect.

Ike's special moves look great. His B-up, Aether, allows him to toss his sword into the air, leap up to it, then come slashing down at a fast pace. Not only does the move look like it goes pretty high, but Ike is stun-proof at the start of the move, which Sakurai says is a trait many heavy characters share in Brawl.

Ike's B standard move is Eruption. Much like Roy's move, though much more visually impressive, and it can also be charged up.

Ike's moves do look pretty cool--I wonder if that last hit of Aether is what causes a possible ring out? (I believe Sakurai mentioned it could send you flying).

It'll be interesting to see more 'heavy' character specials explained, cause that's a pretty interesting way to treat them; stops super fast characters from stopping heavy characters outright.

But if he's not flinching, doesn't that mean he's totally open to a grab, which would again put the advantage in with the fast characters.

If we go by SSBM's properties, I don't think so. They could grab you out of a block or airdodge, but not when you were considered invincible, IIRC.

However, this is SSBB... it would suck that once again, faster characters pwn faces while the bottom is filled with DK/Bowser/etc.

Eruption looks cool,Kinda like Marth and Roy's regular B but upgraded.

Aether,I still say,it should've been his final smash, now that Aether isn't it,what will it be?

Aside from that

It looks like a pretty good move, but it looks like he jumps a little too high..I mean, compare that,to another char's Up B

So after about three weeks of more important updates, we got some new music, from Kid Icarus. It sounds very hero-ish, and is fairly upbeat. It would probably sound best in the adventure mode.

Shadowpower709 wrote:

At least some returning characters got their B-up moves upgraded to such a degree, as evidenced by the "you must recover!" update. Ike's is a bit to the extreme, but I imagine if you're falling in midair while throwing the sword that it wouldn't go quite so high.

MoronSonOfBoron wrote:

With several differences that make it stand out. Aside from the obvious animation difference, note that by the screenshots that the attack seems to take the opponent up with it, rather than just lightly flipping them into the air. That, and the flinch-proof section of the move help it stand out further. And of course, Ike is a heavy character, who is bound to do a lot more damage.

Pit's FS, Palutena's Army. Pit calls the goddess for help, and Palutena appears as a giant that takes up a large portion of the stage. She doesn't stay long though, as she summons the flying Centurions, the footsolders of her heavenly army, who divebomb at Pit's opponents in a sacrificing blow.

It's visually impressive, and fairly unexpected. Palutena looks great, too.

Either there needs to be more centurions or they need to do quite a bit of damage per hit >_>

Also its not that unexpected, in Kid Icarus the game you could collect hammers to free the Centurions who would help you during the boss fight. :yogi:

Ganondorf and Shiek were confirmed.

In an interview with Game Informer, Aonuma said:

GI: Have you been consulted at all for the usage of Link or Sheik or Ganondorf for Smash Bros. Brawl?

Aonuma: I’ve been working with Sakurai for a very long time with this new Smash Bros., because the Wii came out and when discussion for a new Smash Bros. took place nobody could think of anyone other than Sakurai working on it. He was kind of the default, and I was very happy to hear that he would be working on it. Actually, my designers did work on the designs for Sheik and Link and Ganondorf. So they submitted the initial designs, and so it would fit in the Smash Bros. Brawl environment, they’ve had to tweak some of the designs. But Sakurai has brought those altered designs to NCL. We’re working very closely with the team of Smash Bros. Brawl to make sure the characters look their best.

Not to mention the post is over a year old, and we most certainly would've heard something more official by now if the shot were actually real.

Returning
- Mario
- Link
- Pikachu
- Kirby
- Samus
- Donkey Kong
- Bowser
- Yoshi
- Zelda
- Fox
- Peach (unconfirmed, but was in the latest video)

Newcomers
- Pit
- Metaknight
- Zero Suit Samus
- Wario
- Snake
- Ike

This was from memory, so sorry if I missed someone.

What were you expecting, another week of new levels and characters? It's not like he can just give those out each weekday for the next 15 weeks, you know. Besides, Pit's FS and Ike's moves certainly aren't bad.

Edgeworth wrote:

that doesn't confirm their playability. All it does prove is that Sakurai got updated designs for those characters, not that he'll be using them as playable ones. He could just as well make them Assist Trophies, NPCs in story mode, just regular trophies/collectables, or even just not use them at all.

Until there's confirmation of themfrom Sakurai or the site, they're still mostly unconfirmed.

That was different, though. There was evidence on the site that could be used to point at Yoshi's involvement, but we don't have any for either Sheik or Ganondorf at the moment. I suppose you could say Zelda in regards to Sheik, but there isn't anything to link her to Sheik in the updates. I hope that changes, but at this point it is still unofficial.
