"Does anyone wanna play Candyland or whatever while we wait for the nine hour mark?" Midge asks with a smirk, her arms folded.

"Then again, Candyland can get pretty violent and I want everyone to be make it out of here alive."

She seemingly ignores Bradley's quip about her relationship.

"The vaccines are behind the '9' door, though. You can't all hold out until it opens at the 9 hour mark," Ghost said, turning to Emma. "Is there another way to open it?"

"As I said earlier, I can open the door for you now that we're done with the rooms." She proceeded to leave the room with the others, heading to the '9' door.

"Oh yeah, right. Yeah that would stink if we all just died after waiting for nine hours," Midge grins as if thinking about a humorous anecdote. "Don't want that happening!"

"W-Wait a sec! Why's my trial so different?" Violet asked. "Everyone else did them in here, so why's mine outside the 9 door?"

“I’m fine with doing the trial too”, Albert mutters softly, not wanting to add anything more with the already increased tension in the room. He seems to be in a bit of pain too for whatever reason.

"Before we go," Ghost turned to Adriana. "Are you... alright?"

"Her mind seemed to be focused on the notebook in her hands. Still reading. "Yes. Ghost, right?"

Ghost nodded. "And you're...?"

"Adriana."

Albert looked between the two. "Does she know she's uh..."

"A homunculus?" Adriana finished her sentence. "I know I lost my memories, and from what this book is telling me... I know very well who I am."

She walked out of the room. She walked past Helios, not even throwing a glance at his direction. Helios frowned slightly, but ultimately followed.

***

"THE NUMBER NINE DOOR HAS BEEN OPENED. IT WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR NINE SECONDS."

Everybody shuffled through the door quickly as it closed behind them. Just behind it was a small chest, which Emma promptly opened to reveal the vaccines inside.

"The moment Bradley is cured of Z, he'll be contagious again." Emma elucidated. "So it's best we hold off on that."

Midge grabbed the chest, holding it under her arm. "Let's get to Violet's trial first. Where to Emma?"

"Just down the hall."

***

As they got down the hall, they found themselves in a fairly large warehouse. It seemed to be used for storage, but there was no special objects of interest inside besides a large monitor on the wall. There was also an elevator at the other side of the room which had THE INDIVIDUALIST written on the door.

"Vi...you don't have to do this." Teddy insisted. "We got the vaccines."

Violet looked at Bradley, his face neutral. She took a deep breath and approached the elevator, inserting the key in the side. The doors opened.

“Hello. Violet.” Null’s chilling voice filled the room. “Welcome to your trial.”

Violet took a deep breath again, but ultimately seemed steady.

“Before I give the next instruction, I suggest all of you thoroughly discuss the following prompt.”

The monitor showed static, but then quickly displayed some text to everyone.

Spoiler: Monitor

Violet blinked. "Do we even have any idea who Zero is? Were we supposed to find clues during the Nullification Game?"

"Zero was... someone who wanted Helios dead, and someone who could control homunculi," Ghost said, arms crossed in thought. "Meanwhile on Helios's side we had, or 'will have' perhaps, Tyrell Hodges, who provided the tech for making homunculi in the first place. But Zero didn't seem to have any interest in them, as far as I'm aware."

"That's about all I've got to go with. But who would want Helios dead so badly they'd bring about an apocalypse of war? That doesn't sound right to me..."

Midge cackles loudly.

"Come on, I got no damn idea," she whispers, the smile fading from her face.

"Well, Albert gave us a big hint earlier when he was captured by the Leader's goon and had his memories stolen so that-- well probably so that they could build a time machine. There was a Teddy homunculus who said he had Teddy's memories even though Teddy had been burned to death earlier in that timeline and his memories had been lost to history. Plus it sounded like they were close, the leader and Teddy. Maybe the reason this is Violet's trial is because she knows who the suspects would be better than us."

"Which is a pity considering the whole reason I'm here is to stop the Leader."

She stretches out her neck, rolling it all the way back.

"So, yeah the leader can control homunculi somehow. The leader had the power to build a time machine and likely used it to send someone back in time using that time machine in the garbage room, which isn't mine by the way. Whatever it sent back in time got Teddy's brain data already and brings it to the future so that homunculi can be made of him."

"Also... if the Leader could control Helios, maybe we're wrong in thinking that Helios and the Leader were against one another."

"Perhaps it has something to do with Mr. Bianchi's trial?" Helios said, scratching his chin. "After all, Adriana had supposedly killed Ghost, despite having absolutely no memory of it. Perhaps Zero was actually responsible for that?"

“But the trials are part of Emma’s game!” Teddy interjected. “So if Adriana was murdering everyone as part of my trial, shouldn’t it have been Emma who was behind that... somehow?”

"Also Adriana had a copy of Helios's data. That's probably what was used to make the homunculied of him."

"Anyway, Helios makes a good point. It's possible Adriana was controlled by the Leader at that time."

"Emma probably just manipulated the Leader into acting by making the smoke go off. The smoke would have knocked out the real leader and they would have wanted to know what was going on."

"Something I... or rather, another version of me learned was that Ms. Bennett was programmed with overrides in her code. So it's very likely Mr. Tesla just put a fail-safe in her to kill everyone if it seemed she'd be unable to determine who Zero was." Emma elucidated. "I at least knew that Adriana would act for that trial, it wouldn't work otherwise. And the death of everyone wasn't a bad option when Mr. Tesla could become a homunculus..."

Realizing how complex the weeds were getting, Emma decided to simplify. "... it's my belief that Zero knows who they are. Even right now."

"I wonder, then, did Adriana hide under the tablecloth after killing Emma in order to conceal the fact that her body would have moved from its original position?" Ghost suggested. "I don't remember anyone giving an explanation for that, when it was talked about before."

"...sorry, that doesn't help us now. I had thought there might have been a clue there, but after thinking it through I guess not. Um... well, if Zero knew they were Zero, and Zero was... here... then would they have tried to intentionally get Helios killed when and where possible? Is that a clue we can use? Are we really sure Zero is here to begin with?"

[Correction: Midge would have said the time machine is certainly hers actually, oops.]

Midge rubs her brow.

"Well Ghost, I guess we could suspect, say, Tyrell Hodges of being Zero. Certainly he could write overrides into all the homunculi at SkyTech. He would control the whole world too, considering Helios would be his puppet as well almost certainly. That would mean that the war between Helios and the Leader is actually all a ruse, which doesn't seem too likely considering how it actually set Helios's world domination back."

"So if we rule out Tyrell, then I think it can only be one of the ten of us."

She peers at the others.

"And I can rule a few of you out already."

"Hmmm..." Helios mumbled thoughtfully. "I have a feeling that what we should be focusing on here is this leader's name: 'Zero.' As in, why they may have chosen that name."

"So if we think about it that way, one person comes to mind, though it does seem kind of ridiculous...Still..." He cocked his eye in someone's direction and looked at them skeptically.

"Bradley was somewhat of a 'Patient Zero,' wasn't he? ...Could that be what it's referring to?"

Bradley frowned "It's weird and it doesn't make much sense." he looked over at Helios "But you're right Mr Helios"

"They used to call me Patient Zero"

If the others seemed shocked by this Bradley seemed nonplussed as he turned to Ghost. "Don't you remember? You gave me my name and I gave you yours. They would always just call me 'Patient Zero' but...it never seemed right compared to all the names in the stories I read. I never understood it and you told me that it wasn't a normal name. That's when you called me 'Bradley' Ghost."

Bradley smiled warmly reflecting on the memory "Knowing now, that's what my parents had meant to call me is nice so thank you for that Ghost." He frowned slightly "It's a shame that your CDC didn't call me by my proper name from the start" Bradley sighed. "Still that Zero guy in the future can't be me, I'd never do that stuff. It's not a real name and after having been through all this I can't think why I would do all that mean stuff."

He gave Violet a big smile and a thumbs up "Hope that helps with your trial somehow."

Emma looked at Bradley as he spoke.

"There's something else I haven't told you. About the reason you were called that..." She started once Bradley was done talking. "I have explained before how the different Blight strains are basically mutations of each other. Weaker strains can evolve into stronger versions under certain circumstances."

She looked down. "A pregnant mother passing the virus onto her child could be one such circumstance. Bradley, you ended up developing a form of Blight-Y when you were infected. You're patient zero of the Blight-Y virus."

"No problem Miss Midge, I still don't think I'm THAT Zero, it doesn't make any sense but if it helps us get out of here..."

He paused considering Emma's news "Blight-Y...that explains how so many people died when I escaped...but it doesn't explain how I could be Zero I mean...in any timeline apart from this game I would have been killed for escaping because you wouldn't have told Ghost to come rescue me."

He tilted his head to the other side "But...in any timeline where I was in this game, I can't see myself leaving or doing all the evil stuff that 'the Leader' does in future so that Zero can't be me."

"Well, Bradley, some day you might grow up to hate the world," Midge chuckles. "Though yeah, I'm having a tough time imagining you becoming the leader."

"Maybe once you escape and cause the pandemic you realize that you can only survive through a series of violent blood transfusions, and then the rest is future history."

"I'm sorry, that's a joke, but it might seem harsh."

Bradley frowned "That's not funny Miss Midge...Miss Null said it was possible to cure me before I leave here." He looked off down the hall towards freedom.

"Besides the blood transfusions thing is wrong, I never felt sick in the slightest and as far as I recall they were taking my blood."

He sighed "Worst comes to worst I suppose I could just wear a suit like Ghost's all my life and keep the infection contained." He joked but his voice held no humour.

Spoiler: Timeline 1
All Zero had known as long as he was alive was the house. It was a long, irregular lifestyle. As he was younger he’d frequently get blood transfusions but began to need them less. Then it was just tests. Physicals. Taking his blood. Even those became much less frequent.

But he wasn’t stupid. There was a world outside there. He knew it. They were hiding it from him. All of them. There’s no reason he’d be the only one in a bunker otherwise…

He made his escape one day. It was long awaited, and carefully planned. When Zero opened the door, it was like a world he had never seen before. Objects he had only heard described before. Streets. Cars. Buildings.

He walked around, eyes fixated straight on the sky. It was incredible. It was like nothing-

BUMP

“Hey, watch it!”

Zero stared at the… girl? She was standing right in front of him fuming.

“Hey genius, you have eyes you know?!”

Zero just stared at her. He didn’t know what to say. He would later learn her name was ‘Violet’ but he didn’t think to ask her for it now.

“Nice to meet you!”

She rolled her eyes heavily and walked away. “Watch where you’re going!”

From then on, it was like the two were cosmically linked. Or rather, perhaps that happened because they were. But it seemed from every union, the DNA of the future would already begin evolving.

Violet would then go home to meet her father, who would get infected and then go out to meet some people on his own. Like a web, it had already become too much to contain. But the CDC did its best in trying to quarantine those they believed had been infected.

… but it was too late.

Helios Tesla. Successfully surviving and willing a victory in the 2032 election. He never tried to stop the spread of Blight-Y. There was no issue more pressing in the history of America. By the time it got global, it was the world’s worst crisis.

His idea to save the world was to build a time machine. Find out who Patient Zero was, at whatever cost. Kill them before the virus could spread. Finding out how it spread was never enough.

Emma would eventually realize the same. Taking whatever precautions she could aside from killing Bradley outright… nothing ever worked. Not moving him to the desert. Not even finding other histories where there was a cure.

Finding out Zero’s identity was the only chance Tesla had. To kill the problem before it started.

Yet Zero was able to counter on his own. He was infected for Blight longer than any human alive. He could see further than anyone, and use that information. By whatever means necessary, he wouldn’t die. He wouldn’t allow himself to be trapped again. He wouldn’t allow himself to be erased.

Spoiler: Part 1
I did my best, but it wasn’t enough. Moving Bradley to the desert seemed to be a logical option, but it didn’t work. Blight-Y was still released.

Recently, I even decided to get a therapist for him. You know her well already. That too, didn’t work. Not when he ends up trapped in a world he destroyed, driven to madness by the constant hunt for him. Having to force every fiber of himself to stay one step ahead the entire time.

Killing him… killing him seems like it would be successful. Even then, not always. But the chances are good.

Yet I couldn’t accept that. I wanted a cure. Nobody would have to die. I would find it, somehow.

This timeline… I hope it’s here. I hope this is the one where we can succeed.

Spoiler: Part 2
“Right then.” Emma nodded. “What’s the next part of the trial?”

“Violet. Will make a decision.” Null announced. “Violet will have to step in the elevator. I will then disengage the emergency brakes, killing her.

“If Violet gets ZERO to go in the elevator, then she will not have to die and ZERO will instead.”

If neither Violet nor ZERO steps in the elevator, all NINE players will be killed. This is the final trial. Thank you for playing the Nullification Game.

“W-What the fuck?!” Teddy was completely irate.

“S-Stop this!” Bradley screamed, pulling on Emma’s jacket. “Y-You control her! You can stop this!”

“I wouldn’t even if I could.” Emma looked down. “And I can’t.”

“I-I’m not that Zero!” Bradley screamed. “I-I’m never going to kill anyone! I promise! You don’t have to ki-kill Violet!”

“I believe that you think that, Bradley.” Emma closed her eyes. “But the universe has a way of converging. And this… this is the only way.”

“I c-can wear a suit like Ghost!”

“It doesn’t work.”

Bradley closed his eyes deeply. “I can… live here. I don’t have to leave. Not if it means.”

“This game is our last chance. It has to end here. I’m not accepting that all those realities have to be our future.” She then turned to him. “There’s nothing you’ve suggested, or will suggest that I haven’t tried.”

“Emma, this is madness!” Ghost yelled. “You promised nobody else would have to die!”

“This was your idea, Ghost.”

My idea?”

“I showed you the information I had from the past 97 attempts. We went through the butterfly effects. How the universe was converging. You were the one who agreed with me that Bradley or Violet would have to die for us to succeed. You decided on this trial to force the outcome.”

Ghost reeled back. Bradley looked up at her, a betrayed look in his eyes.

“T-That’s im-impossible…” Ghost panted. “Th-There’s no way on Earth I would…”

“There’s a lot you haven’t told me.” Emma admitted. “You still never took off that thing in front of me and… I have no idea why you did what you did in the operating room. All I have is your assurance that things will work out.”

“G-Ghost, is… that true?”

“... I don’t know.”

“Uh now would be a good time to remember things, buddy.” Albert said, shaking.

“I-I would remember if I could! There’s nothing I’ve been trying to do but that!”

Violet stared at the elevator. A growing sense of trepidation was building in her heart.

“I don’t get it.” Adriana looked around nervously. “What does Violet have to do with any of this?”

Emma looked at Ghost as if she would answer. Ghost just stared back.

I guess the universe is just funny that way… The words flashed through her head.

"But...but this is stupid! And...and it wouldn't work anyway would it?" Bradley insisted furious "If it was as simple as killing me then there were loads of timelines where that happened! None of them stuck! We all just ended up back in another one!"

"What does killing Violet accomplish anyway?! It's just stupid!" Bradley gave Violet a wary glance and moved to block her if she tried to go. He gave Teddy and even more cautious glance in case he tried something drastic.

"Look why don't you all just leave...we'll inject ourselves separately...away from each other. You can contact the CDC to come back and get me. I'll just wait here...then no one has to die."

Emma and Ghost’s staring contest was interrupted as Emma rose several inches into the air—thanks to Teddy’s hand, which was now wrapped around her neck.

“Null said Violet has to get Zero to go in the elevator,” Teddy snarled. Cold fire burned behind his eyes. “But all you want is for Zero to die, right? So is it good enough if he goes in the elevator at all? Or does Violet have to be the one who puts him in?”

Teddy wasn’t applying enough pressure to choke Emma, but it was still very very uncomfortable.

"It's...up to Violet. This is her trial, she has to decide she doesn't want to go into the elevator for Bradley going in there to be an option." Emma said, retaining a calm tone despite Teddy's grip making it hard to get the words out.

Adriana had been flipping-- reading through her notebook rather than speaking. But she decided that now was the time.

"I... uh... Look, I just woke up and I'm trying to get up-to-speed." she said as apologetically as she could. "But the first thing I do isn't gonna be to force two kids kill each other. I'm happy to die here if that's the only alternative. Or... maybe I won't? Because of my nature, I'm not sure what will happen to me."

"At any rate, I've made my call. Neither of these kids are dying because of what one of them might or might not do in the future that they have no control over." she continued. "I'll oppose anyone that says otherwise. Anyone." she said, glancing alternatively at Teddy and the suspended Emma.

After a bit of thinking, she asked to no one in particular. "I... don't suppose there's a kid-sized version of that anywhere we can access?" she said, pointing to Ghost's hazmat suit.

"What if the part where we all die is just a placebo?" Midge muses to a spot in the air a few feet to her left. "If you think about it enough it all starts to make sense."

Teddy released his grip without warning, letting Emma fall to the ground. He turned to face Adriana... and broke out into a grin. "I like you, Adriana. I really hope you didn't write anything too bad about me in that notebook of yours.

"But yeah... If it isn't a bluff, and Emma really did fucking set it up to kill us all if one of the kids didn't kill each other, then she may as well die too. And if all of us die, then whatever fucking tragedy was supposed to happen should really be avoided, right?"

"Wh-What?!" Helios shouted, "Th-Then what the hell are you suggesting? That all nine of us die so one doesn't have to?!"

"If we as a collective would sentence a kid who hasn't done anything wrong to die by falling through an elevator shaft, then there isn't one among us who should live." Adriana said.

Midge breaks out of her trance for a moment.

"Violet probably dies in the outbreak though less than a month from now. There's been ninety three Emmas and as many outbreaks. We're all signing our lives away if the outbreak happens."

Violet listened to Null's words, growing more and more horrified. She clasped her hands over her mouth, trembling in fear. "What the hell...but I...I don't wanna..." She glanced back and forth between Bradley and the elevator, before collapsing to her knees, screaming.

"I DON'T WANNA DO THIS! I DON'T W-WANNA DIE! I DON'T WANNA KILL BRADLEY! JUST STOP THIS! EMMA STOP IT! STOP THIS STUPID GAME!!!"

Her screams quickly became sobs, and she collapsed even further, falling to the ground in the fetal position.

Bradley sat down beside Violet and gently laid a hand on her shoulder trying to comfort her as best as he knew how. His face was grim.

"It's ok Violet...I'll die again if I have to."

He spoke quietly for only Violet to hear while looking at the others while they argued. "There's so many here who'd be happy to see me die...they seem to think the future is set in motion, that I won't change which seems a pretty fatalistic point of view. The things we've found out about me only make it worse in the end." Bradley hung his head silent for a moment "Listen to them...talking like we don't matter, like they have a say in it but it's up to you Violet but...you have a family out there...a life!" he glanced sideways at Ghost "There's nothing out there for me but ghosts and death." He patted Violets shoulder "I'm not saying I'm giving up or that I don't want to find another way out of here but if it come down to it...it should be me in there." He finished quietly.

Turning to the others he spoke louder to them again "You've still not answered my question Miss Null. What even makes you think this would work permanently? We've all died before, what if this moment right now...what if what you are doing fails and MAKES me hate mankind for it?" He stayed beside Violet "What if you just postpone the inevitable and one day I get out...with full memory of the torture you inflicted on us...is that the world you want to create? You'd be better off just curing me now...you have the power. This whole trial is pointless."

He looked over to Adriana "I'm not sure she'd let us go back for it but there was a couple of suits that would work back in the mansion. Still if I just stayed here I'm sure someone could come back with something from outside."

You thought you could be safe in your courts, with your laws and attorneys to protect you. In this world only I am law, my word is fact, my power is absolute.
