"Yeah, yeah, I was planning on it, Eli mumbled, looking up from the folder.

"I suppose, if I'm being honest, I didn't really know Ryan Scheffield. I only really learned about him later on. But where I'm from, it was impossible to not know of Ryan. No one could avoid seeing the mark he left on the community."

"Ryan was in the same grade as me. He was optimistic, he was easy-going, he was quite simply hilarious. And he was really involved in the theatre...everyone knew he had a bright future ahead of him. We were living in darkness, and Ryan was the light."

"But I guess you're wonderin' what he has to do with this," Eli held up the folder. "Well, from what I can tell, Alabaster Corp. had an eye on him. Y'see, like many of us, Ryan believed that technology had advanced too far and left us behind. And he was quite vocal about it. I guess some of his protests must have been costing Alabaster money, cause they regarded them as 'a threat.' Which I guess doesn't surprise me."

Eli glared back at the folder darkly. "But it does make me pretty suspicious...especially after how long Ryan's murder case has been sittin' on my desk."

Taylor's eyes widened a little in surprise, and he brought a hand to his cheek to scratch it. "Jesus... That's terrible."

He then scoffed, crossing his arms. "Well. Not only are we forced to participate in this damn killing game, but this Ryan guy was murdered. Both have to do with Alabaster, since we went on this trip 'cause of them, and they have a file on Ryan. Isn't Alabaster juuuust fucking great?" he said, the sarcasm clearly dripping from his tone.

"... And another thing. Those other files... Do you think those people were considered 'threats' as well?" he inquired, doing air quotes when he said "threats".

The teacher spread his hands wide. "Mr. Keyes, do you honestly believe that I had any knowledge of this? I have said this many a time now, and I say it again; I do not know everything that goes on at Alabaster. The only things I do know are the things that are directly related to you and your ability as an Ultimate. That's it.

A worse idea was that the entire thing was posed by Alabaster, but he didn't think the kids would appreciate that line of thought.

After all, everything was falling scarily into place for it all to have been set up under their jurisdiction... and he'd probably take the fall for it too.
