The winning player, with $1,000,004 dollars, is:

VIOLET

As a sign of good will, everyone will still recieve their money from round eight.

There it is. The winner is apperently Vivienne DuGrande.

"Oh right, of course!" a mirthful chuckle escaped from Vivienne's lips. "Yes, that was me, wasn't it?"

Vivienne pulled down the brim of her hat and grinned smugly, spinning her parasol about one finger. "Well, I must say, you all made a fine showing out there, but I suppose it just wasn't enough...Though I never had any doubts that I would win this little game in the first place!"

"And yet, I think we all noticed the money-making facet of the game take the backseat a while ago, so I believe this game is not quite over yet." She held her hands together and added, "I think we all came out of this with some excellent gains anyway!"

"Yes, I suppose there's the fact that I get the money even if I didn't win," Stella admitted with a wry smirk. "Well, congratulations, in any case. Interested in explaining how you made such a gain?"

"The only reason I joined this game to begin with was so I could give back to Iris's family. That doesn't appear to be a problem any more," Jason commented. If he was surprised by Vivienne's victory he didn't show it: he looked too exhausted to take much interest in the game itself now. "My reasons for staying go far beyond that at this point."

“Hahaw! Bravo my most vivacious Vivienne.” Maximillion declared clapping his hands together in applause “While the specifics of your victory elude me somewhat I trust they will be verified.” He set a hand on his hip seemingly rather tired by the whole ordeal. “Though it seems a bit of a mediocre ending to declare everyone wins prizes but I suppose some of us here have been through an ordeal that the money can attempt to salve.”

"I wouldn't say I made any substantial gains in the last few rounds," Vivienne replied, smiling. "In fact, I only needed to count one person's charity to get past the million dollar mark. How much did they give me again?"

Vivienne trailed off, pretending to ponder the question. "Oh, right. It was a humble donation of $27,000!"

"A 'humble donation' from your friend Max, perhaps?" Jason suggested with a flicker of a smile. "I suppose the unusual rules would mean a donation would come in before the $450,000 winnings: the round was over, but the winnings were to be awarded after a 'short break'. Ostensibly you didn't have the funds to reach $1,000,000 even after the $450,000, so I suppose it would be easy to ask anyone, really, for just a small amount to bring you up to $550,000."

Vivienne's placid expression remained unchanged throughout Jason's speech, but she seemed to ignore his suggestion.

"Indeed, it simple enough to convince someone," she said, "Especially when everyone thought my totals were much lower than they truly were. You see, I had to lie at one point to make sure no one would stop me from making gains in later rounds. I truly am lucky to have gotten away with it. I even forgot to mention my extra $4 since I had no chance to check my bracelet!"

"So my 'missing money' was really just extra gains from games here and there...It was a still a close one though. I actually would have won in the last round, if not for my supposed sister here being so, well...forgetful."

“I’ll let them keep that to themselves, if they do choose,” Vivienne replied, laughing quietly. “Perhaps they may be a little embarrassed that they single-handedly allowed me to win.”

“The prize probably. Only the winner gets a special prize.” Luka dejectedly resounded to Ember, arms crossed.

“Who cares anyway, congrats Vivienne.” He sighed with exhaustion. “Not like I was playing for anything else at this point. Just a vague dream of getting to the 10th step, so I could say I could. So I could pretend my life actually meant something.”

Luka, looking terribly exhausted, turns toward Stella and opens his mouth to say something.

Only, whatever thing he wants to say doesn't leave his lips. There's nothing but air.

His eyes lose focus, shimmering like glass, and he begins to fall to the side. Stella catches him, but he's completely out.

He's not just out, he's cold.

Hazel seems very surprised by what was going on.

"Oh my goodness..." Hazel gasps. "I hope he's okay." She's completely clueless to what was going on with Luka.

Maximillion's eyes snap to Lukas body as he drops. Thinking fast he grabs a cushion from the bed and places it underneath his head. Before diving down and listening for a heartbeat and breathing.

All joviality gone from his voice Maximillion muttered "I'm hoping I'm right about this boy being a mere drone. His controller might just have disconnected upon losing the game if so." He placed a hand on Luka to check for a pulse. "Otherwise someone should call an ambulance now."

He's not breathing. Maximillion leans close and thinks he hears the faint sound of a heartbeat, but it's very irregular.

All the doors unlock.

"Wh- Luka!" Jason yelled, running over to him. "No, you said you'd stay, don't do this!"

His eyes darted to Max as he started talking. "I don't think it's quite so simple. You remember him talking about those stuffed birds whose souls reclaimed them? Luka told me he believes he's the same way. If he's like this, then his soul..." He turned back towards Luka's lifeless face, distraught and uncertain.

Despite the concerns over Luka, Hazel looks like she's thinking about something, but then.... There was the look of confusion on her face.

"... That can't be right." Hazel said, clearly confused by something. "Could there be something wrong with me? That.... memory doesn't make any sense to me, now that I thought about it some more..."

Iris gasps, staring into the display for a while, apparently too shocked to talk. After a few seconds, she speaks up. "How-- is he... dead? Please don't say he is..."

"So do you mean to say Luka is but a stuffed doll whose soul has passed?" Maximillion tossed off his jacket and scarf and rolled up the sleeves of his fancy shirt.

"Possibly but I am still a man of science so I will treat him however I know how."

He placed his gloved hands on Lukas chest and began to perform compressions to keep his heart beating.

"Or if that WAS the case, then wouldn't some morphogenetic mumbo jumbo like Cousteau's song fix this?" He panted through the effort.

Stella's words don't reach him.

Luka stares up at the others lifelessly, his eyes like glass.

In fact, they are glass.

Vivienne seemed remarkably calm considering the circumstances.

“W-We don’t even really know what Luka is!” she cried, “But if he’s just a soul inhabiting an artificial body, what are we supposed to do? Drag it back in somehow?!”

"Can an ambulance even do anything?" Ember asked, staring at Luka's glass eyes. "... Max, I don't think you're doing anything either. He's a robot. He doesn't even bleed..."

Maximillion paused slightly seeing the glassy eyes that seemed to suddenly be the focus.

“Well...there’s still the chance he just has glass eyes. I definitely felt a heartbeat so I’m not stopping!” Maximillion insisted as he continued to press into Luka’s chest.

Maximillion sighed as he watched the paramedics look over Luka.

“I had not thought this night would end this way.” He closed his eyes solemnly and focused on the cool night air as he tried to clear his head. “I suppose we should just arrange to go home at this point. I am little in the mood for afterparties and games now.” He sighed and turned back to the house, shivering slightly now without his scarf or jacket.

"What's going to happen this shouldn't be happening what do I do what can I do..." Stella muttered incoherently as she followed the stretcher. "M-maybe... Cousteau? Would that work?"

She turned to the bird riding faithfully on her shoulder. "Cousteau? Can, can you sing for Luka? Just a little?"

Cousteau, sensing Stella's distress, looks eager to help.

She stretches out her hand in front of her and he hops up onto it.

He begins to sing his song....

Spoiler: "Flashback"
Crushing responsibility.

Expectation of only the best.

The belt.

Sweating over the hot oven.

Late nights furiously writing papers.

Constantly, every day.

And it was lonely.

And he couldn't do anything about it.

He did what he was told.

He became the best.

Even so, the best wasn't good enough.

There was no end in sight.

He wanted it all to end...

He just wanted to rest...

And so he did. Forever.

...

"Why wasn't anyone there for him?"

Cousteau's music resonates in the souls of everyone present. He's such a beautiful and talented singer. It's so unique and wonderful to behold.

A paramedic bites her lip, "I'm sorry that you should all be receiving this news, but it seems to us that this young man has already passed away. There's probably not much more that can be done even if we take him in."

"What? No... No, no, no, that can't be. I don't think I could bear to lose him twice!" Jason wailed. "Are there no options remaining? Who revived Luka in the first place?"

As Cousteau sang, Stella stared silently at Luka, her expression slowly shifting from blank to bewilderment. She stood there in a daze for several moments, then shook her head and hurried off without a word.

A couple minutes later she returned to wherever they were now with the recorder from Jason's room and played it.

Hazel doesn't seems to be paying any attention to the situation with Luka as she looks to be bothered by something. Perhaps it have to do with a memory that she mentioned a short time ago.

"It doesn't make seem... Does Zero know about my situation...?" Hazel said, looking very confused. "My great-granddaughter was... alone at the altar... And yet, the wedding went as usual... It's difficult... to put together what happened."

Stella plays the recording, desperately trying to do something, anything, to change what happened...

Spoiler: "Flashback"
A girl runs through the forest.

A hard rain took place the night before. Deep puddles cover the ground.

She searches the forest for her companion. Her closest friend in this place.

When she finds him, her heart can hardly take it. Her best friend lies face down in one of the puddles, motionless.

...

She runs, crying softly to herself, carrying her friend in her hands.

She reaches her father, showing him the dead bird which accompanied her for so long.

He smiles to her, "Don't worry, I can take care this."

He took the bird and left.

...

"Come, look!" her father says, beckoning her into the church-like building on the property.

Inside, everyone is there. Rows and rows. Each one is flipping through sheets of music.

At the front. There's her bird. It's sitting there, lifelike, but clearly stuffed. It makes her feel uneasy.

Then, everyone in the church begins to sing. Singing his song.

The bird on the alter, as dead as it was, begins to stir. The call of its song too great to ignore.

...

Watching the dead come back to life is too much for the girl. It's revolting. Sinister. Disgusting.

She runs as fast as she can away from the place, hoping to leave all the creepy daily rituals and the green rocks behind.

That was the last time she ever saw her father.

---

Rain falls hard from the sky. Two boys open the window on the side of the house. One passes down a suitcase and a bag full of clothes.

They sneak over to the car parked nearby. They load up the bag and the suitcase.

They stand by the car, about to go in. The two of them are both jittery with excitement, eager to start anew.

The expression on one's face suddenly changes... He doesn't quite seem as happy anymore. In fact, he's very anxious.

Luka was completely soaked in the rain, but he just pulled the hood over his head tighter. It was easy to ignore at first, in the heat of the moment, but suddenly he stopped in place. He felt much colder.

He turned to the boy next to him, looking frightened. “... did you just... feel something?”

He looked up at the sky, the clouds covering any light from the moon. He then looked at his hands as if he were unsure whether they were real. “... whose memories were those?”

Jason's young face twisted in confusion. "What? What memories? Are you... having second thoughts about leaving?" he asked in concern.
