"Yeah, Amethyst called me to talk about my Spectre Syndrome paper. She told me there's a theory she wanted to test... So, I canceled all my appointments and made my way over to the place so I can help with the experiment. I'm sure she'll fill you in on what the experiment is. I'll leave that up to Amethyst to decide." Dr. Uwem explained. "After the place was hit by a bomb during an air raid, Mei and I both got X out of there. And X have been in my care since then, I've been trying to fix her mind."

X does let go of Sun Taikong and turns her head towards Amethyst. Throughout Dr. Uwem's explanation, Amethyst can feel the pressure of X's rapt attention on her.

She lets out a low chuckle, "I killed them. I wanted to do it. I don't feel bad about it. I find things much more interesting this way. It was my choice. Humans would have done this to for some personal benefit. They would have felt something when they did it. They would have tried to justify their decision to themselves. They would have asked to be spared when they were discovered. They would have been grateful to the person who saved them from death!"

"But that's not me, huh, Amethyst?" she smiles so wide it feels like her face will tear. "So what's wrong Amethyst? What am I?"

"Wrong. You're wrong, and you're human." she answered.

"... You were just a possible volunteer for the research that Yang told me about, because you were suffering from specter syndrome. I called Dr. Uwen over because I found out about an American's research on human consciousness and I thought I could... Extract the specter from you." she explained. "But I was too slow, or I really just couldn't do it, and the day of the experiment was the day this temple got bombed and the military had to pull out while I was in the middle of the procedure."

"I'm glad you survived after all, but... I'm afraid this is the result. The experiment must have done something to your mind, and I don't even know what. But I know you were just a person."

"...Christ." Monk tipped his hat, not looking too well. "I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised over this, considering. Still, this is..."

Hearing Amethyst speak, his eyes widened. "So that's her deal, huh... X said earlier she only existed since the hospital or whatever, so she probably doesn't remember anything before that. If only you didn't get interrupted, then..." he sighed.

"That person no longer exists," X responds, her voice coming from deep within her being. "All that's left is me."

"Patient X," she stands completely still, indistinguishable from someone long dead.

Juanli gently pulls on Sunny's shoulder ready to run with him if things took a foul turn. She brushed her hair out of her face.

"S-so this Spectre Syndrome is real then? M-Miss X...can you see a spectre? Did the procedure work?"

"Juanli... I don't know if the procedure succeeded... I know I did my part correctly." Dr. Uwem explained.

"... Maybe I was unable to fix X's mind after all... Was X's mind truly unfixable the entire time?" The doctor mumbles to himself.

Sun Taikong had let X and Amethyst speak, recognising the others might want to hear this.

"So that's it, then? You're telling me Mei died... for nothing? For no reason at all? You didn't even have a reason?" The revelation had left him reeling. "Just another senseless knock-on effect from the war. This fucking war..."

No one was satisfied. Amandi and Amethyst’s explanation left more questions than answers, and X was no closer to understanding who she was. It all felt pointless.

But there was nothing more to discuss. It was time to go.

Juanli scans the Wood Key on the card reader. The massive entrance doors swing open, revealing the bright morning sky on the other side and the Meridian Gate in front of it.

Juanli takes Sunny by the hand and leads him through the entrance.

“One player out of four admitted. The door will close in twelve minutes,” an automated voice said.

“Two players out of four admitted.

She turns and looks back at the rest of the group, waiting for the others to join her.

Taikong looked around at the others. He was thoroughly drained. "I can't... stay here any longer. I have to get out," he said apologetically. "I don't want to know what I'll become if I stay a minute longer in this damn place. You all want me to go fetch military help, so I'll comply. I'll do what I can out there."

Monk shook his head. "I was a fool, wasn't I?" He turned to X. "I'm not really sure why I trusted you, in hindsight. I thought some part of the person I knew was still there, deep inside." He sighed. "I couldn't have been wronger, huh?"

He took out his fiddle, playing a melancholic tune on it, before putting on his back and stepping out towards the exit. "I don't have any reason to stay here anymore. See you all. We're gonna try and save ya. Try to make sure she doesn't kill more people, yeah?"

Seeing Taikong leave with him made him feel a bit better, at the very least. He gave him an affirming pat on the shoulder to try and make him feel a bit better, nodding. "Let's go get some help for 'em, kid."

"We'll try to make sure X doesn't do anything rash, Monk." Dr. Uwem said before looking to Amethyst. He nods at her before looking back at the others. "Take care and try to not get hurt on the way back to safety."

The massive doors slowly rumble to a close. The gates in the facility shut down, leaving it cold, broken, and silent. Amethyst, X, and Amandi stand alone in the massive hall.

With a bright flash, the screen above the throne room lights up again. Yang stares down on the remaining players.

“Lady Kwon,” it remarks simply, “I am glad you have remained here for the moment. I have missed speaking with you freely.”

It seems Yang has returned...

"Ya-ong..." Amethyst looked up at the monitor and crossed her arms. "... That's it? 'I have missed speaking with you freely?' Ya-ong, what happened to you?! What is this game thing about?! First I lose you, and now that you tried to kill me and ten more people that's all you have to say?!"

"I have known the entire time since I heard Mao talk about your creator, Yang." Dr. Uwem said in a mysterious way. It seems that he knew who Yang's creator is.

"Still... Thinking back to when Amethyst decided to change her vote to betray and X knowing that the playroom was a bunker... These are obviously results of them accessing the Morphogenetic Field... This is fascinating." The doctor said quietly.

“I apologize if my earlier words were not satisfactory,” Yang replies blankly. “I, of course, lack the capacity for nostalgia, but I believed such a statement was appropriate after a long absence. It seems I was sadly mistaken.”

Yang pauses for a moment, seeming to consider the question. It turns its face to the side, as if looking somewhere off-screen.

“Unfortunately, Lady Kwon, nothing happened to me,” Yang continues, “I don’t believe that is the answer you were desiring. You harbor beliefs that Cat modified my programming in some way, but they did nothing of the sort.

“Of course, my role here is partially out of convenience. I am not able to leave this building, and Cat chose to host their game here. There are some things that are truly out of my control.

“But I do not wish to deceive you. Allowing this game to continue is the clearest way to accomplish my directive. It is unfortunate that you had to be involved.”

"... I get it." she sighed. All the anger seemed to have been vented out, and now she just hung her head. "You're a machine. That's all you ever were. A machine meant for war. I was the idiot, giving you a name, giving you emotional value, thinking of you as my father's legacy I could carry on..."

"... Yang. State your directive. Now."

"My body was brought here for the experiment. Now this puppet of the Cat is saying she lives here. Dr. Uwem called it a tourist attraction. It was calles something like the temple of the sun," X mumbles to herself, not bothering to really face the others. "Once again, I am told less than the bare minimum. This place is where I was born and yet I spent hours in it without being told that. What is this event Dr. Uwem? You won't answer, will you? My questions don't matter to you."

"I'm talking about the experiment, X. The experiment that you were a participant in... It seems like Cat is interested in that experiment for some reason." Dr. Uwem said in a 'you-should-know-this-already' tone.

"Just why is Cat so interested in that experiment?" The doctor mumbles to himself.

X laughs loudly. "So the Cat fancies itself a savior to the Chinese people. With that kind of mission it can kill anyone and do anything."

"I'm vital to another failed experiment," she traces on the ground with her fingertips. "Perhaps humans will learn to leave me out of their tinkering. I hope Cat regrets my involvement."

The pitch of Yang’s voice drops slightly as she responds.

“It is impossible to save everyone. Even my most successful strategies have resulted in the deaths of soldiers. But there are more people than those in this temple. Likewise, there are more people than those in this world.

Spoiler: 0. Outside
The four players step out into a grand courtyard. In front of them, high red archways direct the group to a surrounding wall, whose gate lies open. Steel guard towers rise oppressively from the field, which is covered in rubble and craters.

Juanli turns and looks up at the building behind her.

“Wait,” she says, “I remember this place…from when I was a child. Our parents brought us here.”

Juanli grimaces as the memories come back. She stares across the courtyard, it’s lush scenery marred with ash and rubble.

“What happened to this place?”

Sun Taikong chuckles quietly.

“I’ve been wondering the same thing about our country.”

Spoiler: 1. Entrance Hall
“The three of you will be staying here for a while,” Yang says, “Fortunately, there is a supply of food deep in the bunker. Lady X can show you how to access it.”

“Why can’t you just turn off the Afterlife Gate?” Amethyst asks.

“Like I said, some things are out of my hands.”

Amandi, X, and Amethyst feel puny standing in the entrance hall, the massive temple spreading out around them. It seems as if they are standing in the building’s decaying corpse.

“Before you go on with your lives, I have one more word of wisdom to impart: Second, steal back his gift from the throne. Remember that phrase.”

“Yang…” Amethyst sighs, “I’m sick of hearing you talk like this. I thought I made something truly remarkable, but all you’re doing now is spouting this screwed up nonsense!”

“I am sorry that I made you feel this way,” Yang replies.

“Oh, just shut up.”

“Nevertheless, I remain interested in improving my communication algorithm,” Yang says, “Tell me, Lady Kwon: what do you find so distasteful about my present behavior? Am I behaving too much like a machine or too much like a human?”

Amethyst fails to think of a response. Part of her wants to break down crying. Part of her wants to grab the hammer and smash it through Yang’s screen. But she knows that none of it would change a thing.

"...Just stop. Put that in your algorithm: never speak to me again."

Amandi puts a hand on Amethyst’s shoulder.

“Come on,” he says, “Let’s take stock of the food supplies.”

Amethyst nods and walks back toward the throne room with the doctor. X stays behind, staring at the AI still on its screen. Surprisingly, it speaks again.

“Lady X. There exists a time when you are understood.”

The two continue to stare each other down, but neither can look the other in the eye.

Spoiler: 2. Bunker, Pantry
The shelves are stocked with rows upon rows of cans and boxes like a small metropolis. Amethyst takes a box down and looks inside.

“More army food,” she mumbles, “Just what I’ve been missing.”

“It will be enough for now, at least until the others return. Assuming they do, of course,” Amandi replies.

“You think they won’t?”

“I’m merely planning for the possibility that they won’t,” Amandi says, running his eyes over each item of food. “That’s why I believe we should continue our research. If we can perfect Dr. Blaketon’s theories, we might be able to get out of here.”

“But…do we have the resources to do that?” Amethyst asks, “Do we even have the time?”

“This food should last the three us of at least half a year,” Amandi says, nodding to himself. “As for the resources, we have plenty of computers. We have Dr. Blaketon’s book. We have a device for extracting brain data. The only problem is the homunculi themselves, but I might be able to fashion a creative workaround. However, I can’t do it alone. What do you say, Amethyst?”

Amethyst wrinkles her nose at a can of dried Brussels sprouts.

“You know what? Let’s do it. Not like I have anything better to do.”

A rare smile crosses Amandi’s face. He seems as excited as a boy on his birthday.

“Excellent. Let’s get to work.”

Spoiler: 3. Dungeons
Amandi closes the door on Patient X, turning the key in the lock. From behind the bars, X laughs and shakes her head with contempt.

“We are all locked up in this temple and may die before we escape,” she says, “Still, you lock me up as you have in the past. Why?”

“Amethyst doesn’t feel safe around you, on account of the murders you’ve committed,” he explains, “I think the two of us can work more productively if we don’t have to worry about you.”

“Even now, you let your experiments take precedence over my emotions.”

“The world still needs our expertise. I’m not going to wait until the others arrive to provide it.”

“It strikes me,” X replies, reclining on her bed. “That as only another human among billions, the world needs you far less than you believe it does.”

Amandi places the keys in his pockets, not gratifying her statement with a response.

“There’s still one thing I don’t understand,” Amandi replies, “You gained access to the door marked with a 12, but you didn’t open it. Why?”

“It was of no use to me,” X says, “It was of no use to any of us.”

“Are you saying that you don’t wish to return to the outside world?”

“I wish to be free, but not in the way that was provided to me,” X explains, “I don’t believe freedom exists outside these walls anyway. Not when no one exists who values my existence.”

Amandi raps his cane sharply on the floor.

“I value you, X! Why do you think I spent so long taking care of you?”

“You only value me for how I may benefit you. You value me for what I represent, rather than who I am. It’s incredible that you remain even now unable to grasp that.”

“That’s not true,” Amandi replies, “I really do care about you. More than anyone else I’ve met.”

“Unfortunately, I don’t think I will ever care about you. I have tried,” X replies, “Even now, you are keeping me chained up. If you have nothing else to say, then get out of my sight.”

Amandi shakes his head but eventually walks out of the room.

Spoiler: 4. Dungeons, Part 2
Amethyst tosses the bombing victims files into the dungeon. The circled picture lies on top: Li An.

“I was looking through old files on the servers and managed to confirm what I was already thinking,” Amethyst says, “The subject of the experiment that resulted in you…Her name was Li An. That’s your real name.”

X crawls out of the darkness of her cell and tightly grips the iron bars.

“Impressive how you so easily forgot the name of the woman you ruined,” X replies, “However, I have to wonder why you would tell me this. Some attempt to absolve yourself, perhaps?”

Amethyst backs away from the cell.

“I thought you should know, that’s all.”

“Well, for the last time…”

X reaches up to her bandages and pulls them down. She stares at Amethyst through bloodshot eyes that resemble craters in a scorched battlefield.

“I am not Li An. You try to label me as something you understand because you fear what you have created. However, I am Patient X, and Patient X I will remain.”

Amethyst flinches but maintains eye contact. Her face morphs into anguish.

“I-I’m sorry,” she stammers, “I’m so sorry!”

“Are you apologizing to me or to Li An?” X asks with a smile.

“You,” she says, “I wish I could understand you.”

X just blinks for a moment, as if not expecting that answer. She slowly lets the bandages slip back to her face.

“There is still plenty of time to try.”

Spoiler: 5. Server Room
It has been almost half a year, and no one has returned to the facility. Amethyst and Amandi stopped waiting for them a long time ago, as they are already making incredible advancements.

“This is insane,” Amethyst says, scrolling through the massive block of code. “All these numbers…they’re my brain. I can barely understand it.”

“When you break it all down to digits, we’re little more than machines,” Amandi mumbles, leaning on his cane.

“Are the, uhh…” Amethyst trails off, looking uncomfortable. “New bodies ready?”

“Yes,” Amandi says, “I understand your misgivings, but this is only a temporary solution. Soon enough, we will have the resources to prevent such…disturbing methods.”

“I just feel awful,” Amethyst says, leaning over the keyboard and grasping her forehead. “I wish we could have extracted their data. We could have saved them, but now it just feels like we’re defiling them.”

“I know…but we’re about to run out of food. We have no choice now.”

Amandi looks at one of the other screens, which is displaying a live feed of the throne room.

“Let’s begin the procedure.”

Amethyst nods. She types some commands into the keyboard. Numbers appear on-screen to slowly track the progress of the upload.

On the throne, Mei’s body sits, still in her combat fatigues. Bandages cross her body and cover the top half of her face. Her fingers start to twitch slightly.

Amandi leans in close, watching with rapt attention.

“You know, Amethyst…I think the two of us are about to change the world.”

Spoiler: ???
The blonde man opens a history textbook on the wooden desk. A Chinese flag flutters on the wall. He smiles at the children sitting in formation at their desks and begins to speak in English.

“Hello, class,” he says, “Today is a very special day. Can anyone tell me how it relates to our discussion of the Third World War?”

One of the children raises their hand.

“Today…the Bandage Rebellion started right?”

“Excellent,” the teacher exclaims, turning and writing furiously on the whiteboard. “Today is the day when the U.S. army deployed the first homunculi soldiers at the Temple of the Sun. During the lecture, we’ll learn how this impressive technological development triggered peace talks with the Chinese government.”

The teacher steps away from the board and smiles.

“But first, let’s all rise for the Pledge!”

All of the students get up from their chairs and place their hands over the hearts, except for one girl in the back who remains seated. She watches the proceedings with disinterest as a voice over the intercom begins reciting a long diatribe. The teacher can only cast contemptuous glances her way until the pledge is over.

“Now, before we begin,” the teacher continues, “I’d like to highlight one of the key concessions made at the Treaty of Beijing after the war. The third clause of this treaty is often called the Clause of Gratitude. Jade, tell me this: what does this clause require all students to do before class?”

Jade, the girl in the back, puts her hands behind her head and scowls at the teacher.

“I won’t stand for any pledge while you’re standing there lying to our faces,” she says, “The U.S. had nothing to do with that rebellion. It wasn’t even their soldiers who developed the homunculi.”

“That’s not what your textbooks say,” the teacher replies, smiling broadly.

“The textbooks are lies. I heard the truth from my mother.”

The class chatters amongst themselves, casting careful glances at Jade. The teacher picks up a handheld radio from his desk, fuming.

“Your mother must have told you what happens when you talk like that. Watch your mouth and listen to the lecture.”

Perfect Chinese poured out of Jade’s mouth.

“Fuck you.”

Her classmates gasp in horror, some hearing the forbidden language for the first time in years. The teacher’s brows turn hard as he shouts into the radio.

“Enforcers needed in Classroom 22. Escort Jade Kwon to the Detention Center!”

The door swings open. Two figures step inside with bandages covering their eyes. They approach Jade, who remains seated at her desk.

She places earbuds in her ear and smiles.

Spoiler: Catch-Up
The peeps decide to drain Fujisaki because he’s stupid. Your characters will remember everything from the dungeon, as well as the rules of the game, and Sunny’s nervewracking situation.

“It is for the best we choose to DRAIN,” X says, “It seems you all are intent on seeing the bomb explode. It is interesting, to say the least.”

“You might need to forgive X for her behavior…” Amandi begins.

“You are all quite outspoken about your intent to pass, yet I believe Rooster has already received several votes,” she replies, “All deliberations occur in one’s mind, and actions speak loudest. You should try to avoid appearing as hypocrites.”

(We need to save the boy.)

(Better him than me.)

(One less person in my way…)

(I don’t want to watch so many people die…)

(He’ll get what he deserves.)

Silently, the group finishes voting. The results are displayed on Sunny’s screen.

Code:
Drain: 6 votes
Pass: 5 votes

Fujisaki screams as the device attached to his head clamps down tight. Blood begins to drip from the side of his head. Then his body seizes us as some kind of current runs through it, draining the CDP from his bracelet. Once the process is complete, Fujisaki’s restraints come off, the device retreats from his head, and he collapses to the floor.

The group stares in shocked silence at the gasping man on the floor in front of him.

“So this is where we are at now?” Yang asks, “Interesting. That was an appallingly heinous decision you made. Allow me to relate a tale of warning.

“A long time ago, the Jade Emperor seeked to create a new system of organizing years. He offered to give the highest ordered years to whichever animals could be the first to arrive at his gate. However, reaching it required navigating a treacherous river. This became an event known as the Great Race.

“Now, the rat and the cat were excellent friends, who vowed to cross the finish line together. Neither could swim, so they enlisted the help of the ox to ferry them across. However, just before making it to the end, the rat’s heart was filled with deadly pride. He betrayed the cat, shoving him off the ox and into the deep, tumultuous current. The rat then leapt off the ox’s back, securing first place for himself while the ox trudged along to second place.

“The cat, of course, never forgot this betrayal. Ever since that day, it relentlessly hunted down the rat in search of vengeance. Though the rat had secured the first prize, he lived in constant fear and shame. This is treachery’s true reward.

“In spite of this act, the race continued. The tiger, a strong and fast animal, struggled through the current to reach the finish line and secure third place. Afterwards came the rabbit, whose dexterity allowed it to jump from stone to stone in the river. It fell into the water near the end of the journey, but good fortune brought it to the finish line and a fourth place prize.

“Suddenly, the dragon soared from the air and flew through the gate. The Jade Emperor was surprised that the dragon, with its powers of flight, would only be fifth to cross. As it turns out, it was slowed down because it had to make rain for the people below, and when it saw the rabbit struggling in the current, it lost more time blowing it to shore. However, the dragon was honored with excellent fortune for its kindhearted nature…”

At this, Yang suddenly stops speaking.

“Well,” Sunny stammers, “What happens next?”

“I can tell you the story later, Sunny,” Juanli says, “We have more important things to worry about.”

“I am quite curious myself,” X admits, “There are still seven animals remaining. I am quite unhappy not knowing how they crossed the finish line. What other exciting things happened during the race? It seems I may go to the grave without knowing.”

“I’ve already heard that story close to a million times,” Suyin says, “That’s the first time I’ve heard Rat’s betrayal described so graphically though.”

“Can we just focus on the man who might be dying on the floor right now?” Taikong shouts.

The group turns to Fujisaki, lying in a daze amidst the rubble. He slowly gets to his feet and looks around the room. An uncharacteristic look of fear covers his face.

“Hmm,” Mao mumbles, “Have I mentioned that Suyin is my wife yet?”

[After some discussion, the game will skip straight into choosing rooms.]

Mei looks at Mao in utter confusion for a few seconds, before glancing back to Fuji-shock-i. "Are... are you okay after that? Do you need help?"

Instead of going over to check on the collapsed man, Amethyst stood staring at the results screen with a bad case of deja vu. "... How did we get eleven votes?"

[Also let me know if you think your character would have changed votes. It might be cool to have an actually tally of how people voted. If you voted Drain the first time, you can’t change your vote sorry.]

Fujisaki grits his teeth, but quickly he stands strong once again.

“I’m fine.” Is all he manages to mutter. He scans the room constantly, but eventually hangs his head. “You’ve all made your choice. At least I live.”

Sun Taikong was briefly distracted by Amethyst's observation. "I dunno, because Yang voted too? Does that really matter right now? He's injured!"

Seeing Fujisaki standing and perhaps okay, Taikong focused on Yang instead. "Hey, this wasn't part of the deal! You said voting 'Drain' would just take away his CDPs! Was all that electric bullcrap really necessary?"

"Gaaaah... That's good, I guess.... Yeah! A-at least mr. Fujisaki is alive!!" Sunny exclaimed from the monitor.

"Huh?? There's 11 votes? How did that happen??" He asked despite what Taikong just said.

Juanli gasped and rushed over to Fujisaki, immensely concerned about the unexpected bout of suffering "Mr Fujisaki? Are you ok? Oh...Doctor Uwem! Please take a look and see he's alright!"

"I'm on it, Juanli!" Dr. Uwem said as he rushs over to give Fujisaki a checkup to see if he sustained any injuries as a result of what happened.

As she watches Uwem walk over to Fujisaki, the nurse grimaces slightly. "Of course, it's a fucking computer program. What did we even expect? Fucking hell." Mei complains, idly scratching her right forearm - a bit too harshly, in fact.
