Agnes was hovering around her own bedroom door, and hanged her head when inevitably she saw what was inside.

There was hardly any reaction, any emotion on her face was drained away. She cried, tears rolled down her face. It was unclear what exactly sparked this reaction, if it was perhaps what someone in the room said. She walked over to the wall and sat against it, hugging her knees and hanging her head.

“Why is all of this happening...?” She futility asked nobody, knowing there wasn’t an awkward that she could get, much less one that could begin to satisfy her. “Where... where are the other cousins?”

Fritz leaned out of the window, his fingers whitening from his grip on the sill.

“Erik! What are you doing?” He shouted. “You won’t last in that storm! Please, come back!”

Seeing no sign of Erik, he stepped back from the window and stopped at the center of the room.

“I’m not giving up on you, Erik!”

He ran across the room and leaped out of the window, aiming for the porch roof.

[Only notable thing about Mia's crime scene is that the rifle is gone and the windows are locked]

The footsteps get faint as Fritz follows them, but it soon becomes clear that they must be going to the guest house. Jolina, not wanting Fritz to venture into this danger alone, follows him (but takes the stairs). By the time they get to the guest house, Lynde is already there.

Spoiler: Raphael's Bedroom
The first room they check is Raphael's. The door is unlocked, and the window seems to have been broken from the outside. There's blood in the room, but no corpse. Perhaps it would be worthwhile to go through his belongings later, but not now.

Spoiler: Vacant Guest Room
After finding Erik wasn't in the large guest room, they checked all the others. The vacant guest room... the one Gideon had been found in. When they tried the door, it was locked.

It was locked.

That detail alone... brought Fritz to his knees. Lynde quietly banged his shoulder into the door, smashing it open.

Erik was dead. He had been shot in the forehead, and the hunting rifle was nearby his corpse. It had been smashed apart, presumably so it couldn't be used anymore. Inside his coat pocket was the single key to the vacant guest room.

There was no doubt anymore... that somewhere on this island, a demon resided.

Fritz got to his feet. He grabbed his sunglasses and threw them onto the floor.

“I told you all!” he shouted. “That fucking newspaper didn’t mean a thing! But you all had to keep investigating, digging up shit, and wasting all of our time! Look what’s happened now!”

He stepped into the room, casting a glare over Lynde.

“Get out!” He screamed, “Get out of this room!”

No matter how Lynde responded, he walked further into the room, past the corpse.

“This has gone on for too long! What is there left to accomplish? Gideon is dead! His skin has probably turned to dust right now. Nothing anyone does is going to change that. So maybe he should act like a corpse and shut the fuck up!”

He spotted a bookcase near the wall, lined with several of Gideon’s stories, and slipped his fingers beneath the back of it. With a roar, he violently pushed it, causing it to topple loudly to the floor.

Verrier stood to one side, cowed. There was nothing he could say.

Lynde looked around the room with panicked eyes books scattered across the room. He very clearly wanted to go back into the room after he had been chased out by Fritz, but he stood at the door un willing to move forward.
"They used the gun, that's new." he said in a quiet voice.

"... Yeah. There's an explanation here. It's so damn simple too."

"By all means then, please enlighten us-", the detektiv says, before being cut off by Fritz's yelling from the guesthouse.

He headed over with the rest of the group. Upon seeing Erik's corpse, he recoiled, and stood silently at the back of the group. He seemed much more shaken by this death, despite the scene being much less grisly than the others.

"If I killed her, then why would I stand guard in front of it afterwards?!" Ingrid snapped while following Christof to the guest house. "To incriminate myself? Occam's razor doesn't work if the simplest explanation is stupid. There has to be another way in and out of the room."

In contrast to the others, Ingrid did go into the room to get a closer look at Erik's corpse, stepping around the scattered books as she did so. "... Was this one locked with the chain? Or the key?" she coldly asked Fritz.

Fritz had been standing by the bookcase, breathing raggedly, the anger on his face giving way to a pervasive numbness. He clenched his fist as Ingrid stepped into the room and watched uncertainly, but once she spoke his face broke out in pain and disappointment.

"I believe it was fastened with the same chains you have wrapped around your heart, Ingrid," he finally spat.

He turned away from her, knelt by his son's corpse, and began to sob.

She turned to the group gathered around the doorway. "How about one of you? Chain or key?"

Ingrid's question snapped Verrier out of it. "Key, I believe..." he answered, before moving into the room to give the new body a cursory examination. "This one, presumably," he continued, taking the room's key out from Erik's pocket to display it.

Fritz seemed slightly surprised by Ingrid’s statement, though not at once as one might expect. It seems the unexpected part was that no one invited him to the wedding.

“Excuse me for wanting a single solitary minute to process my son’s death without being yelled at by people who care more about doors than his own life,” he shouted, “Erik...I’ve watched him grow up...and I thought I would see him become a man. B-But now I can’t. And I foolishly thought for a moment that you would understand. But now...I don’t.”

Fritz stood up, snatched the key from Verrier’s hand, and hurled it at Ingrid.

“There’s the key. Now take it and get the fuck out!”

Cici presumably joined the others at some point and upon seeing the corpse of her son, she fell to her knees and began to sob.

"M-My baby..." She managed to say. "W-Who would do a such a thing to him...? Who took my baby away from me...?"

During the discovery, there was one more 'person' in the room. Yet whether they were a ghost, presence, or a memory was not known, because Ingrid was the only person in the room who could acknowledge him.

[Scene Music]

"Ready to solve all of this already?" Gideon's spirit smiled at Ingrid. Whether he was there or not, she was the only one who could see him.

He was the last person she wanted to talk to, so instead she turned to everyone else. "Let's head to the foyer... anywhere but here."

Quietly... she still reached her heart out to her brother.

If you have something to say, just say it already

"Just one, small thing. The tape you used two years ago is as effective as your tape today. And yes, that means exactly what you think it does."

In the midst of all the sorrow and rage Ingrid felt, a new theory was born.

~~Chapter 3~~

Spoiler: December 1985
Agnes sat on the steps to her school, waiting to be picked up. She wrapped her scarf tighter, trying to conserve whatever warmth she could. A luxury car eventually did pull up, but it was not the driver she had been expecting.

“Father!”

“Come on, Agnes!” Gideon smiled from the driver’s seat. “I can get you to the port at least.”

Agnes hopped in the car, ready to tell him about her time at school, her new friends, news about Lynde and Edna-

“Have you been working on anything lately?”

“Yes, yes. I have two drafts. Only one of them is a closed room, but the other is a good spin on the genre.” She handed him two journals from her bag, which she carried around since this wasn’t the first time Gideon had come to her after school.

“Excellent. I’m sure these will be just as wonderful as the others.”

The two talked a bit about her stories, but it was clear she wanted to talk about something else.

“Father… when are you coming home? It seems you only stop by for my stories.”

“Soon.” He stopped in front of the port, opening Agnes’ door for her. “Tell your mother I said hello.”

"You can tell her yourself some time, you know." Agnes grumbled in a rare show of disrespect. But Gideon did not admonish her, instead just saying goodbye and watching as she headed to the boat.

Spoiler: 7:30 AM
[Snowymood]

Truthfully, it was stupid for Verrier to sneak off while everybody made their way from the guest house back to the mansion. Not even mentioning the killer on the loose, he just as easily could make himself a target. Knowing that risk, he still went off.

He ended up at the pond, somehow frozen even if just a thin layer. It was quiet, and that allowed him the time he needed. To reflect over the case, his life, and his actions.

“Dooooooooooctor.”

Even in the freezing weather, a notable chill went down Verrier’s spine at the sound of Gideon’s voice.

“And w-what do you want this time?” He shivered, not wanting to turn towards the phantom.

“What do you think? It’s your turn.”

[Scene Music]

It was like a gust of wind had thrown Verrier onto the pond, shattering the ice beneath him. He scrambled around, trying to find something to hold onto, or at least futilely fight against the ghost with.

“N-No, Gideon! Please!”

But Gideon would not listen. He grabbed Verrier by the back of his head, admonishing him like a child.

“Why? Give me one good reason I shouldn’t kill you!”

“I-I never had anything against you!” Verrier stammered. “We never got along, but I never hurt you!”

Gideon punched Verrier in the nose and held him into the frigid water once again. Verrier once again struggled to latch onto something, but he was completely at Gideon’s mercy. Gideon then lifted him up.

“I’ve been waiting to kill you for a while, honestly.” Gideon manically smiled, obviously enjoying this. “After that stunt you pulled--but I’ll give myself some of the blame for falling for it.”

“There was no stunt!” Verrier pleaded, coughing as he tried to form even a short sentence. Tears rolled down his face, freezing almost immediately. “I-I only told you the truth!”

“Then repeat it. Say it in red.” Gideon laughed. “Say ‘I never tricked anyone into thinking they had a terminal illness.’”

Verrier’s eyes widened in complete fear.

“What’s wroooong? It’s a simple request, isn’t it?”

I-I never tric-” Verrier coughed again, this one cutting the air out of him completely. Gideon then submerged him underwater again. This time, Verrier knew he would die. He had no strength left.

And then Gideon lifted his head once more. “Repeat it. Say ‘I deserve to live’. If you believe that, I’ll let you go.”

He didn’t even try to repeat himself this time. He couldn’t. The best response Verrier could muster was crying more, crumbling onto the shore. He screamed with the hope that somebody could hear him, be it man or spirit.

“... I can’t.” Verrier muttered weakly. “... I don’t.”

Gideon’s smile dissipated, and he looked down at Verrier as he was on the shore. “Pathetic. Now you’ve made the mood all sour.”

And then Gideon… simply left. The doctor remained on the shore for a few moments, shivering and shell-shocked.

When the group arrived at the foyer to find Verrier missing, they were pissed. But after some time, he wandered through the door looking like a wet and frigid rat. His only explanation was that he got lost on the way and fell into the pond as he wandered. More than anything else, he really needed a blanket, RIGHT NOW.

There was a fireplace in the foyer, and he immediately parked himself by it.

Agnes, who left getting a blanket to one of the servants or someone else, approached Verrier by the flames and sat down next to him, though not too close.

"What happened...?" She asked, despite knowing that he already gave his answer.

Meta wanders around looking for something warm to drape over Verrier. Eventually, she finds a warm towel from a linen closet and drapes it over Verrier.

Meta's eyelids droop, as she feels rather tired. This leads her to accidentally smacking Verrier in the face, but she doesn't notice.

The accidental hit caused Verrier to recoil, though moreso than the impact alone normally would have. He didn't say anything about it though, and stared into the fireplace for a few moments before responding to Agnes instead. "I'd rather not talk about it," he said, which at least was honest.

Distressed enough by Mia and Erik's deaths, Edna had excused herself out of the room immediately after the bodies had been discovered. Seeing Verrier in the foyer like that though, she appeared concerned. "A-are you quite okay, Doctor?" She asked, not knowing what had happened to him. "C-can I get you anything?"

For a few moments it looked like Verrier might not have heard her, but then he turned and gave her a slight smile. "Nothing, thank you. Rather than worrying about me, I can relax knowing you're looking out for Agnes. These will be hard times ahead."

Looking to see Agnes right by Verrier, Edna let out a sigh. "Yes... I suppose somebody has to." She shook her head. "I'm just hoping this storm comes to an end, we need the authorities on this island posthaste."

She had been quite distressed these past few hours. For some reason, she'd been acting even more on edge than she had been after the murders at 4 am. Maybe the reality of their situation was finally getting to her.

Unlike Edna, Ingrid seemed to have her head somewhere else entirely. She stared at the fire pensively. "... Edna. Do you remember what happened the night Gideon died?"

She sighed. "Forget it, that's a stupid question. Of course you remember. Could you remind us?"

"I-... what?" Edna seemed to panic at Ingrid's question, not having expected it. "Why would you..? I arrived at this island with Agnes late due to boat trouble, but after that I went to Gideon's bedroom and went to bed shortly after we reunited..." She looked down at the floor mournfully. "After that, I woke up the next morning... Gideon was already gone."

She looked back up at Ingrid. "Why would you want to know this? You know I'd hardly know anything." She wiped some sweat off her brow as she spoke.

"But I know for a fact that the door to your bedroom didn't open even once between when I got there at 10 PM and when Gideon was found missing at 8 AM."

"H-huh?" Edna had a perplexed look on her face. "How are you so sure? Why do you think I wasn't in my bedroom at that time? I was woken up by the family when Gideon was found missing... I was in the bedroom then. What you are saying doesn't make any sense."

"...I should also probably clarify, me and Agnes arrived at the island at 9:45", she recalled. "I... must have already been in the bedroom by the time you arrived. It must be a mistake on your part, yes."

"I know you were in the room, Edna. What I'm asking is, if Gideon went to bed with you that night, how did he then leave and appear in the guest room?" Ingrid continued. "That night, I taped the door to your room as soon as I got there. Not just that, at midnight, I taped the doors of every guest. And then..."

She paused for a moment, breathing shakily. It was something she'd been holding in for a long time. "... I know I sound insane, but I couldn't shake the feeling something was wrong. I had to be sure. I even looked into an empty guest room, and taped the door to that too... The room we found the corpse in. The tape was intact when we opened it too."

"The only ones that were broken in the morning were Heinrich's and Friedrich's."

"And you never told anyone about it until now?" Juna questioned with a snide air. It was fairly clear from her attitude that she was about done. "I'd say there's a higher chance of you lying than there is of that being true. We're talking about this family, after all."

"Yes. Indeed!" Ingrid laughed. "I knew it. Two years keeping quiet on this, and I knew this would be the response I get. You want the easiest, simplest explanation possible, so obviously I made up this entire story to... No end at all! You think I've gone crazy!" she kept laughing like a crazy person.

"Midnight..." Edna mused. "That was the same time Agnes saw Gideon, yes? So he must have gotten out of that locked room somehow... Perhaps the same manner through which he entered the room he was found in without breaking the tape... If anyone could have done it, it would have been my Gideon." She let out a strangely uncharacteristic laugh. "I wonder how he managed to do it... That's my Gideon, always having an affinity for the impossible."

"Juna, please." Edna put her finger to her lips, indicating the servant to quieten down. "I don't think Ingrid would be lying about something like this. I trust her. Since the rest of the family were considered suspects by her, she had no choice but to keep this information to herself. Even if for two years..." She gave Ingrid a sympathetic glance, a bit odd considering the circumstances.

"She really does leave those tape pieces on doors all over the place, though," Verrier volunteered. He looked somewhat better now, though no-one could tell if he was just putting on a front. "Just from her behaviour these past few days alone, I wouldn't put it past her to have done that back then." He didn't outright say it, but he seemed to be implying that either way, Ingrid was crazy, possibly crazy enough to tape up all the doors in both houses on a gut feeling and then keep quiet about it for two years.

"Yes. In fact, the day we got here, I taped the door to Gideon's tomb." Ingrid continued, emboldened that at least a few people were taking her at face value. "The tape was still there after dinner, of course."

"But when I checked after we discovered father's corpse, it was broken."

Fritz had been sitting with Cici throughout the discussion, trying to comfort her. He seemed to be barely paying attention to the discussion, having given up on any semblance of familiarity.

He finally glanced up at the sound of his own name.

“Who cares if the tape was broken?” Fritz said, “It’s not a crime to open the door of your bedroom. I was probably just getting some water or something. Neither of us could have entered the guest room or Gideon’s bedroom anyway.”

“And the tape on the tomb was probably just cut with scissors to screw with us. Just like the newspaper stunt...”

"Well reasoned, Friedrich. The tape being unbroken proves a door wasn't opened, but if it is broken, it could always just have been tampered with." Ingrid said. "And not just that. The gift at dinner, and then all these closed rooms... Someone is trying to make us think Gideon is back from the grave."

"Edna..." Ingrid sighed, turning to look at her. She seemed angry, but most of all a little hurt. "I want to believe you. For the last two years, I've wished from the bottom of my heart that I could just believe all of you."

"But I know for a fact that the door to your bedroom didn't open even once between when I got there at 10 PM and when Gideon was found missing at 8 AM."

"Um... Aunt Ingrid?" Agnes, who was still sitting silently next to Verrier, turned around to face Ingrid, looking up at her. "I'm sorry, but that's not possible."

"Like Mother said... Father and I met that night, at midnight, specifically. We both ended up a little hungry... I wanted a late night snack, and it seemed like he did as well. So... If his bedroom door never opened, then how did we see each other? If Mother saw him in their room when they went to bed, and I saw him that night, then..." Agnes seemed to really hesitate, going against Ingrid like this, so she ended up just going silent and frowning. It also seemed like Gideon's death was still a very sour subject for her.

"... And that's the whole problem, isn't it?" Ingrid looked at her niece with a bitter smile. "I think you or Edna are lying to me. Or both of you. Friedrich too, who was the one who insisted I wait until morning to see Gideon. I feel like everyone in this island is lying to me. It's like the only thing I can trust anymore is the tape."

Agnes frowned even more somehow.

"Is that how you really feel?" Agnes asked, though did not wait for an answer. "I wouldn't... I..."

Agnes turned her back to Ingrid and faced the fire again. "...Would it not be possible for someone to re-apply the tape? I know what I saw when I met with him... I would say he was never in his room, but Mother said she was with him... Or maybe..."

Agnes seemed like she had more to say, but instead went silent and just hugged her knees, hanging her head and sitting quietly.

"Simply unthinkable... Lying, that is. I would never do such a thing, and neither would Agnes." Edna looked at her daughter with appreciation in her eyes. "As I said earlier, I would not be surprised if there was an alternate way out of the room that Gideon figured out somehow. In any case, if your tapes tell the truth, then he had to make it into that guest room which was already taped closed. I'm sure both mysteries have a similar solution here."

She seemed to have calmed down since Ingrid's initial accusation and had gone to stand by her daughter's side, staring straight at Ingrid.

“Could this explain what Gideon meant by his final closed room? Of course we had no idea at the time, but it could be possible,” Meta smiles dimly in a chair by the warmth of the fire, simply accepting the information as it is without getting worked up.
