This is partly about Phoenix's personality I guess.. is he too easy going? He seems to be led astray by some characters, especially when it comes to "paying bills".
Spoiler:
At the end of both GS1 and GS2, there's a smilar gag about Phoenix's money being used (without his knowledge) to a) get Lana out of jail in GS1/PW:AA and b) Take the gang out for a meal when the final case is won in GS2/PW:JFA.

To which Phoenix responds Huh? HUH? and "OBJECTION!"
Spoiler:
I'm not sure I'd be quibbling over money at this point if I were Phoenix, especially in GS2 when he has just saved his friend's/love interest's life or found his client not guilty of murder

I put spoilers just in case anyone hasnt played the end of the games yet.
What do you think?

Yeah, that's right. And on top of that, the meal for all those freeloaders ;-) Poor Phoenix, he should stand up for himself.

He doesn't exactly pay for her bail as such, just so Lana can see Ema for a few. It's not like she's a free woman after that.

That's true.
Also I guess Phoenix is far too polite (as many would be) to say something in a situation like that (eg letting Lana out for a bit, paying for a celebratory meal) out loud when it's meant to be a celebratory time. Most of those things he says in his "thoughts".

One wonders how he keeps the Wright and CO Law Offices open without taking cases, often he goes months in between with out one and even after the 1-5 case when he has offers pouring in he keeps refusing them.

The bills must stack up after a while. :beef:

Plus do believe he said in t 2-4 that he doesn't get paid for being a lawyer.

I believe exactly, it was:

I don't even get paid, nonetheless, large rolls of cash.

Poor Phoenix those bills always get you at the end of the game, but wait if Gumshoe is really that poor does that mean Phoenix might have to help Gumshoe pay rent???

If he doesn't get paid the major question here is not why is Phoenix too lenient with his savings but how does he afford a place to live and have enough money to buy food to eat in order to live? In fact, if he doesn't get paid at all like he said in JFA then it's a miracle he's managed to find a place to stay let alone live.

He does get paid. Just not "large rolls of cash."

But the man still must have something on the side, or had a large inheritance, or *something* in order to keep up an office and apartment at only 4 cases a year. Because...

Larry certainly couldn't have paid him (or if he did, it probably wasn't much).

Maya probably didn't any of the times she was on trial :B

Will probably did for 1-3. The Steel Samurai was very popular, after all--he could probably afford legal fees. And he and Phoenix are still on good terms a year later.

If Edgeworth didn't pay Phoenix for 1-4 he's a total jackass. :edgeworth:

Lana was Chief Prosecutor, she could afford to pay him anything, probably.

Maggey probably couldn't afford much, either time.

Max...was really popular as a magician, and got a raise recently, but it's hard to judge how much money that actually entails.

Poor Phoenix probably didn't get anything for 2-4.

Yuusaku could afford it. One way or the other. :yuusaku:

So...there might have been one healthy pay out per game.

How does he survive on that!? :ack:

"Get another client off the hook or go hungry again!"

Or something like that.

Lawyers get quite healthy sums per job... if they win. (i think it's only if they win. Would make scense)

So if he's a good money planner it may be why he survives the large gaps...

But that doesn't make scense with the amount of things he ends up paying for... (no doubt he also has to pay for everything whem maya drags him to each and every Sumeri (sp?) movie. lol)

It adds to his lovableness, the fact that he gets trodden on by other characters. It's the same appeal as Gumshoe, just not as extreame.

Just ask yourself, would Phoenix be as loveable if he was stinking rich and had a solid gold desk?

Good point. I think thats why I like him, he's an everyman sort of guy. He's 24/5, but sometimes he sure doesnt act like it.

Maybe he takes on small acting roles on the side (might as well put those college acting courses to good use), or he draws for a successful series of mangas under an assumed name.

Either that, or Powers was so thankful that he paid him enough to last him several years' worth of gameplay.

There was the line in 2-3 when you examine the pictures on the wall in Berry's office. Phoenix asks "what about all the clients that were found guilty?" To which Maya says "we'll just pretend they never happened". It caused alot of speculation and debates and I can't remember whether it turned out to be a mistranslation or not. Anyway, that one line opens up and Phoenix gets more income than we are led to believe.

On topic: It is hinted that Phoenix takes cases we don't know about in the gaps between games.
