Why Phoenix quit... spoilers for 1st 2nd game

I don't think Phoenix truly wanted to be an attorney. In the first game he said he became an attorney to meet and help Edgeworth and he does. And I noticed that after the fourth case he had no real passion for his job anymore. He took the fifth case because of Ema showing up and that was about two months of not taking any cases, first case in the JFA was probably at Gumshoe's request and Maya, second case Maya was in trouble, next case I think it was Maya again, and of course fourth case, Maya's in trouble again. And I think between each case is a month's worth of down time of not taking cases and worrying how the bills will be payed. That and the fact the cases get harder and more ridiculous, coupled by the fact some of the Prosecutors have a beef with him had to make his job suck. (AOL tech support sucks but at least nobody was trying to whip me, literally at least) Oh well, what do you think?

If Phoenix really hated his job, he surely wouldn't have continued his career after he finally met Edgeworth. The fact that he continues for two more years after that negates the notion that he didn't care for the job afterwards.

I think it was rather obvious that he didn't take cases between 1-4 and 1-5 because he missed Maya, or at least having a Fey by his side to guide him. And just because Maya is a motivational plot for some cases doesn't mean he hated his job otherwise, either.

He could easily have refused them if they asked. Just because they're his friends doesn't mean he HAS to take their cases. If he truly hated his job, he wouldn't put such a performance into defending his client, he'd of just done a half-assed job and that was it.

I certainly don't think Phoenix hates his job, but I agree he's consistent in showing drive or passion towards the job in itself. Lawyering is a means for Phoenix to look out for the people he loves; I don't think the act of lawyering in itself does much for him. The development in GS4 feels natural to me largely because of that, though I do think there must have been a specific trigger--too much was emphasized about how Edgeworth and Phoenix both need each other and rely on each other to accomplish their jobs, and what Phoenix may lack in drive, Edgeworth certainly has in spades. It's hard for me to imagine Phoenix just up and randomly deciding to quit because of that, if nothing else.

... But... But I like that new style! It's awesome! And original! And daring! Seriously, how many bald men would dare flaunt that?

As for Phoenix, I doubt he hated his job. We were privy to his thoughts. He was passionate about what he did. It was more than just about Edgeworth. It was about defending those who had been abandoned by everyone else.

But he doesn't.

If Naruhodou hated his job, then he'd have quit after the "Suicide Note Incident", and GS2 and GS3 would've never happened. No. I'm pretty sure all the references he makes about quitting being a defense attorney are either jokes or random outbursts caused by stress from having to deal with an annoying assistant.

The true reason as to why he quit his job, if he even really quit at all, we have yet to find out.
