I don't like the stories, I don't like the gameplay, and I don't like most of the characters. I think WRPGs are inherently superior, especially when done right.

Anyone else agree? I think I've just 'grown out' of them.

Funk, my short love affair with JRPGs began with FF6...

...And ended with FF7.

I personally blame the problem on the anime/manga culture, which has a habit of turning out cheap or rehashed ideas without changing the medium much.

Western RPGs have the opposite problem, I find - you take a look at the major RPG names on the market and they're more often than not big-name productions with big money behind them and big ambition. As much as Western RPG makers want to revolutionize the industry, it's too focused on high production values to make any real penetration into the zeitgeist (as JRPGs have done).

Cheap Hollywood, and blockbuster Hollywood. Rom-coms and action movies. Japan and America.

I used to like rpgs during the 16 and 32 bit era.

Now I just beat them once and never bother getting the secrets or play them again.

"The anime / manga culture"

Do you mean, perhaps, JAPANESE POPULAR CULTURE? I mean I don't see why one exists outside of the other; it's certainly not foreign to them, and the maturation of all facets of 'pop' have gone hand in hand. And manga and anime have existed long before RPGs ever showed up on the scene; yet after Osamu Tezuka and Go Nagai really 'established' the manga genre, for instance, everything else has been just another redux of a storytelling archetype that came before it.

Anyway, there's really something inane about deriding JRPGs for being 'the same thing' or saying 'you're growing out of them'--what exactly are you expecting from them? There are only so many derivations of a story that you can tell, and no matter how original you try to be, your game, comic, novel, movie, tv show is going to somehow draw on that archetype. And on the off chance you somehow create some 'new' archetype, all that does is establish a new and robust line of the same that follows the original.

JRPGs succeed, and are popular, on the basis that people play them for the core 'values' that make up the game--mostly linear story, grinding, quests, and an ending. WRPGs are really no less different, but focus on instilling 'freedom' in the narrative with sometimes fantastic (Fallout) and sometimes horrendous (Oblivion) success. To say WRPGs are 'better' is pretty much impossible, since you're comparing two very different styles of play--hell, for the most part they are different genres inside of the 'Role Playing' sphere--on the one side you take the reigns of 'observer' (or in games like Shin Megami Tensei, DQ, etc. the 'hero and observer') to a story; you're basically guiding yourself through a preset narrative, like reading a book--a book whose narrative is only as interesting to you as the characters, setting, and plot are. WRPGs attempt to have you play a 'first person hero' in the sense that you don't usually know the overriding story or have omnipresent knowledge, and are instead 'writing your own ending' on top of a pre-existing 'story map,' which is why many WRPGs fall completely apart near the end, and some succeed surprisingly well.

Saying that something doesn't 'change the medium' is really pretty pointless--first off you don't change something that isn't broken, and 'changing the medium' is practically impossible; and besides, once you change it, everyone will just copy you. FF7 is pretty much the most modern example; it's success launched the '3D JRPG' trend that's still going strong now.

You're going to need better technology before you can really expect to see something 'new' in terms of JRPGs, which will then just become old hat, which is just like every other media system.

Most seem generic, western or japanese.

You just have to look harder for the gems. Hell, I've really been losing interest in gaming all together, and started to play visual novels.

Used to be a huge RPG fan, but I just can't get into most of them anymore. Oblivion is coo', but I find myself downloading a PSX emulator and playing SaGa Frontier and having a much better time. Go figure.

I still play JRPGs though the ones I actually bother to sit down and finish depend on how captivating I find the story and how easy it is to get into it. e.g. Paper Mario

RPGs have kinda lost my interest lately...no matter where they originated from. Usually because of all their basic factors (equips, HP, status conditions, etc.) seem to be getting old on me, no matter the story...

plus, lots of them are LONG. I have a short attention span that's getting shorter and if I can't finish a game within a week I never finish it period. D=

Me I'm not nuts about having to spend hours wandering around in circles trying to level up. Especially if it means having to hold down the B/X button minutes at a time for each fight.

I didn't mind it too much in Xenogears, Chrono Trigger or Vagrant Story though. At least they tried making the gameplay fun and engaging.

I always have and always will enjoy a good rpg, both JRPG and WRPG, doesn't really matter to me who makes it. If the story and characters are really interesting I'll play though it even if the gameplay mechanics are kinda bland. Also I'll play a game with a bland/unoriginal story if the gameplay is alot of fun.

The last new RPG I beat was "Dragon Quest:Rocket Slime" which I enjoyed quite a bit, and I'm still working on "FF3DS" which is also a great game, I'm going to pick up Luminous Arc, Blue Dragon, and Eternal Sonata cause they all look like alot of fun.

For a while I thought I was done with RPGs, but then I played FFXII, and it refreshed my appreciation for the genre. I thought that was a great example of mixing things up a little, while keeping basic elements intact. I know not everyone likes it, but at least it felt new.

(I know, it's based on MMOs, but I don't play those, so it felt new to me!)

I loved typical JRPGs up until I turned about... 14. Which should not be taken as an attack on older people who love 'em, since my fiancee certainly does. But I no longer found the gameplay interesting.

I generally prefer WRPGs myself, though my favorite RPG of all time is from Japan - Tales of the Abyss. But the Tales series has always been the off-beat classic of the JRPG family.

I usually prefer JRPGs, not as into WRPGs. Though those two Star Wars ones were alright.

But... I don't like games that mix JRPG and WRPG elements. FFXII kinda tried it, it's also common for those Korean MMOs to do.

You know, KRPGs (also know as 95% of free MMORPGs) are god awful 9 times out of 10, if you ever need to appreciate an RPG, JRPG or WRPG, go play Runescape or Flyff for like 10 minutes, the game will seem like a gem after that.

SMT, SaGa, and VP all follow a much more Western design philosophy.

Shadow Hearts is just well done, except 2 and 3 which were dire.

Although the plot of 2 was pretty lame, I have to credit the SH crew for creating some pretty hilarious scenes; also Yuri's 4th wall breaking in 2, and Frank in 3 are worth the price of admission.

Also, the Ring Soul.

Well, I do like some JRPGs, but maybe not as much as I used to.

I like the Tales games because they're easy to pick up and play, and don't get boring easily. 'Least for me.

But the greatest JRPG series out there is Shadow Hearts, without a doubt. Excellent plot, great characters, awesome monster designs, it's set in a parallel version of Earth in the early 20th century, the battle system is really novel and fun, there are shitloads of sidequests, the production values are good, it has a great sense of humor, the music is awesome, and now, there probably will not be any more games made, since Nautilus, the developer, has been dissolved by its owner, Aruze, because fucktards like you, yes, YOU (aside from Kenjimurasame and Zuddha), didn't buy it, preferring to go out and buy Final Fantasy XII(which is fucking TERRIBLE, by the way) and other such crappy JRPGs that are a poor example of the genre.

You should be ashamed of yourselves.
