It could be interesting to have the opposite of this contest, ie, everybody has to put forward a design for the same character. XD Grown-up Pearl, Grossberg's wife, a potential son of Edgeworth's... if you had three or four options to pick from, it could be really interesting seeing the difference between everyone's interpretation of the same thing. :3

"So I finally organized the contest section into a fully inclusive Original Character Archive (the link to it is in the fanworks section). Now everyone can not only look over the entries that were submitted this year, but can enter their own. I even added one of mine to get the ball rolling.
At this point, enough interest has been shown in the contest that I have a tentative plan to do it again come Spring 2008 (probably around the same time). But if you submit something now, you will still be able to change and enter it, so don't worry about having to keep a lid on your characters or anything.

You speak as if giving criticism (no matter how constructive) to the creators of most of the characters in question won't send them into conniptions and nervous breakdowns.

A lot of fandoms are of the belief that original characters, by their very existance, are bound to be poorly crafted products of personal fantasy. But especially in a series like PW, the game can only progress through the creation of new characters and cases. Fans want to do the same, and why shouldn't they?
Encouraging people to appreciate OC's just might also encourage their creators to put even more effort and thought into their work, and that is never a bad thing.

I'm not speaking badly about OCs; to the contrary--I think well-crafted OCs that fit both the mood and the style of the original piece are fantastic and truly flesh out a story. OCs by themselves can be amazing.
I'm referring to, of course, bad OCs. Mary Sues, self-inserts. I feel that the internet has evolved into such a place where EVERYTHING is praised that honest criticism on many self-insert/Mary Sue OCs is honestly and truly unwelcome.
