Aha, I've actually found a contradiction in both blue badger dolls.

Take a look at the top picture again:

Image

Note that the Blue Badger doll is smiling...

Image

But this one has a frown...

Either that doll can magically change facial expressions (not bloody likely) or this isn't the same doll.

The simple explantion is the angle of the picture. I'd say it's far more likely the doll's expression is more along the lines of a straight line. When tilted back, as it is in the Phoenix picture, it looks like its frowning slightly. When seen straight across, it looks like it's smiling slightly.

Objection overruled, CI.

Nah. Even given the slight angle you should be able to see the ends of the mouth on the 2nd blue badger to turn upwards. If it was the same badger, the arc of the mouth would almost appear like straight line but still maintain its "U" shape.

Hahaha, I'm not an artist, so I'll bow to your superior skills. (Plus this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever debated. :godot: )

But it doesn't look like it's really smiling in the first picture eitheeeer! Okay, okay, I'll stop! XD

Shh...I still think he gave him that doll  , well, okay maybe he won him another one. Or it could be an artistic continuity error. :edgy:

But like Axl said, dude check out Edgey's skills with a shotgun. He's firing that thing one handed while holding onto the Blue Badger plush. Curious as to what other skillz this boy is hiding from us, eh? :hotti:

I did notice the mouth, but I thought it was a cute coincidence anyway. If they are different dolls and Edgeworth kept his, then does that mean that he and Phoenix have (almost) matching blue badgers? XD
Sometimes the same toys will have different expressions in different pictures (although I don't know if that's the case here). Like at the festival the badger is happy and then it's frowning in Nick's room because he's going to be late (or it was traumatized by something... no comment).
In any case, it's just fun thinking about the possibilities of how the badger could get from Edgey at the festival to Nick in his room. XD :ack:

Doubt it. If it was one of those dolls, it'd be more blatant...

Also, there could be a camera in the doll. Or a voice recorder. Or a bomb. Or a sentry turret.

I hope this helps explain it. :edgy:

Yes. Yes it does. :gymshoe: Thank you.

I also totally did not notice that Blue Badger connection (and that image of Nick scrambling to get to court on time is one of my favorites from the fanbook, too...). Nice catch, even if it may not be the same doll.

When you said that I thought of the Happiness Bunny skits from Shin Chan! For those who don't know what I'm talking about here's a link to the episodes.

The Unbearable Sadness of Being

Happiness Bunny's Revenge

I can see Nick hitting the blue badge and taking his frustration out it for all the food and crap that he's has to buy for Maya or maybe not. :phoenix: I can really see Maya as the Shin Chan in the skit. :maya: One of my favorite quotes of Bunny's Revenge.

Happy Bunny: "I tried to be the cute, cuddly lovable guy but you punished me like I was the bastard! so I might as well be the bastard! Don't you think that's fair!?"

I wonder why no one has used any Shin Chan stuff in a Phoenix Wrong parody yet.

Shin-chan! I remember seeing some clips from that show years ago. It would be so cool to have a parody of the revenge scene with the PW charas. A living blue badger would be funny, but mostly terrifying. O_O Nightmare indeed. :badger:

On the topic of Edgeworth, it seems like his sexuality is left ambiguous on purpose, although it definitely leans well towards the gay side (or you could see him as completely flaming, depending). There's nothing that confirms his preferences, which means that fandom can play with different ideas. (That goes for a lot of the characters. Fun times for every kind of fan!) I was thinking about how the game defines his relationships to the women in his life.

Mother: Most likely dead early on? I wondered if she died in childbirth... It's clear that his father was the biggest influence for him.
:franny: : Sister. They grew up together and Fran explicitly calls him her little brother.
:lana: : Boss. Edgeworth felt like she was looking out for him.
:maya: : I'm not sure how to define this one. They meet through a shared contact and become like extended family, sort of. They care about each other's safety, but they don't really actively seek each other out.
:raygun: : He'd rather not get involved. xD
:scientific: : Fangirl.
Spoiler: GS3-4 cut just in case
:youngmia: : Almost immediately, Edgeworth tries to put them on a different level; he's the genius prodigy, while she's the novice bimbo. Although Mia is quick to retort that he's a novice bimbo as well. XD (Those lines were hilarious.)

He never really seeks out a female as an equal to him. The closest case would be Franziska, but that is on a professional level, daring her to catch up to him, rather than romantic. (This could be debatable depending on what pairings people support.)

Spoiler: GS3-5
Then there's Phoenix. (My shipping flag is showing. >.>) Their relationship is not fully defined; Phoenix says something like, Rivals? For now... and Edgeworth says, Friends? In... a sense. The thing is, the last thing Edgeworth calls Phoenix is partner. Out of the entire cast, Edgeworth seeks out a relationship of equality with Phoenix Wright, after going out of his way to put himself on a different level than others, including other men.
I would honestly be shocked if Edgeworth meant the word in this way, but "partner" does have a sexual connotation.
You can say that Phoenix and Edgeworth have a really close friendship and that's fine, but the dialogue in the games slaps me in the face over and over with the potential for something more, whether or not it is fulfilled.

I could see straight Edgeworth pairings being developed in fanon. There are a lot of interesting points to explore. However, from the games I have a hard time seeing him going after female company for the purpose of romance and everything that goes with it. It's not his clothes or his mannerisms that necessarily make me think of him as gay. It's Miles Edgeworth the character, as a whole.

Short version: He's gay. (But it's a-ok not to think of him that way if you like.)

Most of this has probably been said more eloquently before. It sounded less incoherent in my head... I'll go sit over in the dumb corner now. >.>

Wow another person who likes Shin Chan! If someone were to do the happy bunny skit as a Phoenix Wrong I can see this cast of characters being used.

:maya: As Shin Chan naturally.

:lana: As Penny's Mom

:pearl: As Penny just because she's against unrealistic fairy tale crap and that's what Pearl likes a lot. Irony.

April May: I can see her doing Ai the rich girl and her voice fits April really well.

The Blue Badger: As the Happiness Bunny that later turns evil and seeks divine justice! jk

Have you seen the skits between Maso and Shin Chan? I like to see that being used as a Wrong skit casting Edgeworth as Maso and Phoenix as Shin Chan especially in the one where everyone thinks Maso is gay when he really has a crush on Ai pure comedy gold there.

As for Miles Edgeworth developing a relationship with the any of the Phoenix Wright characters the only that I see that might have have a chance is of course with Nick. However that doesn't mean that the other ships don't have a chance it just might take more work for the relationship to actually happen.

Very good post, Chirin. That's something I agree with, even on Phoenix's end too.

Speaking of equality, Edgeworth is really the only one in that respect for Phoenix too. Phoenix loves Maya dearly--she's the person closest to him, his constant companion--but the way he thinks about her is more along the lines of someone he has to look out for. Pearl is a given; she's a little girl that both him and Maya are protective of. Mia is his mentor--she's above him, not an equal. You could make a case for the other prosecutors, but Phoenix's only connection to Fran is through Edgeworth, and his only connection to Godot is through another person as well. Aside from that, he has no real burning desire to know them personally.

I never understood why certain clothing or habits (tea drinking?) automatically groups the person with one sexuality or another. When I first saw Edgeworth, I just thought he was a snob; him being gay never crossed my mind until 1-4 when he mentioned "undesired feelings" to Phoenix, at which point my inner "shipper subtext" radar went off.

And I also don't understand where this idea of an "obsession with Maya" was drawn from; I never picked up on anything like that in AA or JfA. :eh?:

One of the things I thought was sweetest and most telling in 2-4 (out of a whole host of things that were both sweet and telling) was when Phoenix takes reassurance from Edgeworth's simple presence; realizing that he felt that everything would be all right as long as Edgeworth was there across from him.

Spoiler: very minor GS3
And how it's echoed and reinforced in GS3, where he's utterly certain that Edgeworth will be able to help him, no matter how difficult or unusual the situation. It's not even a question.

Paedophile, no, but obsessed with Maya? Where'd that come from?

It is a bit of an age gap when you consider maturity. 7 years isn't that large in middle life, but the mentality of a 17 year old is vastly different from a 24 year old. Maya's a complete darling, but I can't see very much common ground between her and Edgeworth at all.

Edgeworth just gives a gay vibe (I have a gay sense). It's the way he acts, dresses and thinks all combined into one. I mean obviously he's the seme, he's too quiet and had a hard past (as most seme's do).
I think he may have a crush on Phoenix which was replaced by feelings for Gumshoe. Phoenix, though crushed by this, moved on to Maya (because he's still confused over his sexuality). Gumshoe is oblivious to Edgeworth's pation for him and so he just carried on as he would normally.

:o i just thought up a whole story O_O; I'll shut up now!

There is one big flaw in your argument here about Gumshoe and that flaw is his extreme crush for maggey.

And no one gives something like that up that easily even if tempted (well for me anyway)

Okay what is it with people automatically saying that if a person wears clothes like Edgey and who drinks tea he's gay. Um, NO. That would mean you're saying that all of England or Japan is gay. They drink TEA. And how many people in America drink tea? A LOT. There's nothing gay about tea. It's yummy. And as for the clothes. No, way, Edgey is a snazzy dresser and I've seen many of Heterosexual men wear magenta, pink, purple, clothes and they look HOT. And thery're not gay. When I first saw Edgey I automatically thought that he was a stuck up, know it all, hot attorney, snob. He's a character who is very regal, or prince like.

Anyway, Shiva, I've seen where some of those pics are from. The last three are from Miteyia. Here's the link. http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/otp/hp/top.html Warning for those who are squeamish, it can be very graphic at times.

(I am from the land of ghei. WRRRRYYYYY)

Yeah, Edgeworth's sense in clothes don't really hint any sort of homosexuality to me- I mean, he's mimicing Manfred's dress sense, just like he mimics Manfred's movements in court- and neither does his affection for tea. The cravat and flamboyant colour scheme is just there to show how upper-class and (to steal Levia's words) regal he is, in contrast to Phoenix's generic suit-and-tie dealie.

...Also, Phoenix is in no way a paedophile. He shows no hint of sexual attraction to pretty much anyone and also points out what's wrong with Larry's 'interest' in Pearl in PW3. I mean, Maya's childish behaviour does make her seem younger, plus the decade between them, but if they got together, it still wouldn't count as paedophelia just incest instead.

Yay! The English contingent speaks up for manly cravats and tea at last! :)

I must admit I was quite surprised that these were offered as emblems of gayness or indeed, emblems of girlishness when I first dipped into the fandom. In my mind when I first played the game Edgeworth, regardless of sexual preferences, was unquestionably manly. I hope he's remained so in the fics I have written.

It's probably why I can't get down with the "all his clothes are pink" fan fetish :)

See, that's one of the great things about Edgeworth, the fact that he IS so masculine. He's one of the most masculine guys in the SERIES. Sure, it's fun to snicker immaturely about his fluffy cravat and his pink suit and call him "frilly prosecutor", but that's best left to just joking around. I don't think I've ever honestly looked at him and found anything "ambiguous" about his clothing choice. He's just well-dressed, in addition to being well-groomed and well-spoken.

I still think he's homosexual, I just don't base that opinion on how he dresses. That's just silly.

His "secret", on the other hand...

Yeah, totally. It's why I had Phoenix make a joke to him about being frilly in one of my fics - because to me it's something that I think would only be a joke between friends and just not something anyone would think seriously.

It's also why I avoid the more "pretty" versions of Edgeworth in fanart too - it's just not how I view him. I liked your description of him being built like a linebacker - that's spot on.
