So I, like possibly a whole third of the forum membership, got myself an imported copy of GS3 when it came out. I play it in English, of course, but I found out a while ago that you could yell the Objections, Take Thats, and Hold Its in Japanese as well as English since the game is dual-language. However, I just can't seem to get the pronunciation 100% correct in Japanese. I'm probably mangling the language as well with my Igiaris and such since I'm only exposed to Japanese through anime. Are there those terrible inflections in Japanese like there are in Chinese that completely change the meaning of the word when uttered incorrectly? I've even tried yelling Igiari in all five Chinese inflections just to be sure but it still only reads about 30% of my Igiaris. :/ My game doesn't respond at all to Matta either (although it does pick up on something my dad told me to say that sounds like Madde or "ma-dey"). Kurae is fine for me though. Is there a secret to the Igiari?

:odoroki: I'll practice my objection all night!

Well, yes. According to the audio rips as well it's Igiari. But whenever I try imitating the Japanese objections I fail. :(

And thanks for the compliment! Internet memes mix well with Phoenix Wright. :phoenix:

Naruhodo's pronounciation seems to rush the first two syllables, so it comes out sounding like 'I-yai', whereas Mitsurugi pronounces all the inflections, so I don't think the microphone should be that picky about what you say :eh?: The microphone seems to get all of my 'Objection!'s, but only half of my 'Igiari!'s. I think that maybe the English voice recognition is just finer tuned, maybe.

That's kinda funny, cuz I can get Igiari and Matta just fine, but Kurae never works for me :sadshoe: I find Igiari works best if you say it like "eeg-YAREE". For Matta the trick is the leave a space between the ts and the first a, like "Ma-ta". (The double consanant in Japanese means to have a pause). Also, are you sure you're pronouncing things right? (Sorry if it seems like i'm treating you like an idiot here, I don't know how much you know about Japanese)

vowels in Japanese are always pronounced the same. When there are two vowels in a row, they don't actually combine, but are pronounced individually (i.e., "ai" often sounds like "eye" but really its a combination of "ah-ee")
a = short o, like "dog"
e = short e, like "bet"
i = long e, like "me" or "bee"
o = long o, like "bone"
u = long u or oo, like "moon"

So, Igiari is pronounced as "Ee-gee-ah-rlee" and Matta as "Mah-tah"

And no, thank god, Japanese doesn't have those horrible tones like Chinese does. :larry:
And on another note, saying them in Japanese works on the non bi-lingual version of PW1 as well, and I assume it does on JFA and will on T&T as well.

My DS picks it up when I pronounce it "Ee-geay". (Garbled version of Igiari)

My DS is crazy. It picks up "Igiari", "matta" and "kurae" just fine, it picks up "Objection" about half the time, and almost never picks up "Hold it". (I haven't tried "Take that" yet)

Interestingly, it accepts "butterfly" for an objection, and a deep groan for "hold it". (I was having fun yelling stuff into the mike the other day...)

It picks up butterfly and groans? I found that if you hold the Y button too long it will automatically object even if you don't say anything.

And I really don't know anything about Japanese pronunciations. My father took a course in Japanese way back when, and they taught "Wait" as "Madde" as I mentioned above. I'm curious why it picks up on Madde nearly perfectly but not my mispronunciation of Matta.

I also had no idea you could shout in Japanese for the English only games. I'mma gonna try that now!

I didn't know you could shout in Japanese in the English modes of the Japanese games! Right, that's my night of fun sorted.

IGIARI! - Because OBJECTION! is just getting boring.

Okay, so I've definitely improved my Igiari. However... Matta still won't work for me, even after those helpful hints. But then again, it usually takes a few tries to get English Hold Its to work too. Even so, I'm still confused about why the difference between "Madde" and my attempts at Matta have such an impact on the microphone picking it up.

I also tried using Igiari and company on my American JFA and it really does work! Gonna have much fun on re-plays now! :edgy:

Not sure how it works on the Japanese version, but the English version will register anything you say, as long as you hold the DS the correct length away from your face.

I enjoy changing my phrases up to "Biscuits!", "Rafa!", "PLEASE WORK THIS TIME!", and simply blowing into the microphone, for all three phrases. They all work fine. :yogi:

But on the topic... I'm fairly certain that "Igiari" is pronounced "ee-gee-arr-ee," "Matta" is "maa-taa," and "Kurae" is "koo-rah-ay," or simply "koo-ray."

Really? I used your DS and could get "Hold It" into that mike... That thing, like, has a personality of its own...

It's fun to yell random stuff into the mike and see if it works, huh... :edgy:

Yeah it seems it doesn't matter sometimes. I got my spanish friend to yell Objection (sounded like he was slurring) and after craacking up for a full 10 seconds is when it finally yelled Objection. I think my DS has like delayed reactions or something >_>.

If you keep holding the Y button it will automatically Object after a while, even if you don't say anything at all.

I just shout random things that sound like the phrase, and that usually works (like once "old mitten" worked for "hold it"), and sometimes words don't make sense at all, but they still work (it picked up "Chocolate Goose" as "take that"...) Do you have any accent at all? Because that could affect it.

I get uber embarrassed when I mess up in public and I have to repeat it. A lot. Then people start thinking I'm crazier than usual...

I was playing the Japanese version earlier today and it was picking up "Igiari!" (ee-gee-ah-ree) and "Matta!" (maht-ta) just fine. Either you're not pronouncing it right or it's your DS. >.o

"EE-GYA-REE" Works for me.
I say MATTA like Phoenix does... "MAH? TAH!"
Kurae is... way too hard. I try saying "KU-RAI!" But it doesn't work. In game characters seem to go "LAIIIHH!". I don't get it.

EDIT: If I mess up in public, I quickly press the button manualy. I can do it so fast, I could probably get some kinda medal.

I tried saying Igiari on my American version of PW1... but it didn't work. Are you guys sure it takes it? :sadshoe: :larry:

I doubt an american version would pick up Igiari, but I did notice the thing where you shout out somthing that sounds like it. "MASTERBIATION!" "QUICK FAP!". I don't need one for "HOLD IT!". :godot:

My American Justice For All picks up Japanese. I don't have AA, so I don't know about that one.

The game doesn't pick up some of mine, either Japanese or English.

Though it has always picked up Objection! and Matta! and usually Take That! for me.

Igiari seems like you need to overemphasize the first syllable ("EE-gya-ri!"). Kurae usually works if you give it a good "koo-RAY!" but kinda smush it together... something like that. Hold It gives me problems but I think if you draw out the first syllable a bit, it works.

I had no idea that yelling Japanese works in the English versions. Suddenly my subsequent playthroughs are looking much more promising.

Also, first post. Been lurking for a while though. :odoroki:
