The main villain of the game who joins your party late always seems to have his powers drained or something because as hard as he was when you fought him, he sucks once you get him.
Too many of them have romance based around the plot. I don't mind it, but its every single game!
Wondering why the bosses from the side quests are alot harder than the final boss of the game. Why don't these harder bosses try taking over the world instead of the pathetic final boss?
Generic classes: Main hero: swordsman
Main female lead: Healer
Main hero's best friend: The powerful, but slow guy who wields a giant weapon like an axe or a big sword
More or less, the main character's hair will always defy gravity.

Gravity defying hair(Although that's basically video games in general)
The main character almost always uses a sword. Can't we get an Archer, or a mage, or some sort of Hand to Hand fighter?

...That's basically it. Although Tales of Symphonia is my favorite game, I have to admit it contains several overused plot devices. And Regal. I don't know why, but I always hated Regal.

I found it okay. The rules were okay, but it just kind of annoyed me because I was in the mood to play an RPG, not a sports-like game and I couldn't skip it in the game.
I haven't played it in a while though, So I might like it now.

Only I found something very interesting... Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars BREAKS most of those rules! The only one that really stands out for them is MacGyver Rule:
(Other than for the protagonists, your choice of weapons is not limited to the prosaic guns, clubs, or swords. Given appropriate skills, you can cut a bloody swath across the continent using gloves, combs, umbrellas, megaphones, dictionaries, sketching tablets -- you name it, you can kill with it. Even better, no matter how surreal your choice of armament, every store you pass will just happen to stock an even better model of it for a very reasonable price. Who else is running around the world killing people with an umbrella?)
Princess Peach. Wanted in four cities for reckless assault with an umbrella.
Mallow. Wanted for similar crimes, but with sticks and... cymbals.
Bowser. Wanted for similar crimes, but his being throwing Mario and a Mario doll at people. *snickers*
Geno. Wanted for similar crimes, with lethal weapons of shooting pellets and stars from his fingers, wrists and elbows, and also for just plain shooting his fists.
