2D vs 3D fighters. They've been a hit since SFII came to town. As the years progressed and Fighters became more refined they slowly started to die out with the over-abundance of crappy 2D fighters arriving in the markets. Eventually 3D fighters came to be, and started to take flight and become popular. Even Street Fighter witch was very popular as a 2D fighter entered the 3D Fighting realm in Street Fighter EX series.

To me personally in my Opinion 2D Fighters are better to play. With games such as Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, King of Fighters, Arcana Heart, ect. There will always be plenty of fun with 2d Fighters since They are the Genre I like the most. I dabbled in 3D Fighters before, but I seriously would get owned hardcore on those. The 3D Fight mechanics are way different than a 2D fighter. My usual Rush Combos I can pull off in 2D Fighters get trampled by 3D since there is that throw command that can grab me. And Some 3D games have a vaiable "BLOCK" Button that I cannot seem to grasp since I have always been used to the Back motion as block.

Anyways, Enough ranting, What is your perfered Fighter style, 2D or 3D. If so, Why? And Why does it over-shadow the other Genre Style?

The biggest problem of 3D fighters is that it's hard to make people ACTUALLY FIGHT without putting them in a way that they're always facing each other, and aim all attacks exactly at their opponent. That means there's a lot less freedom to be had.

True, and then there are games in the 3D specturm, like Tekken, where each button is detered per witch arm, For example: X-Left Kick, O -Right Kick, [ ]- Left Punch, /\ - Right Punch. So basically to get combos in right you need to press a string of X, X, O, /\. Then of course witch holding down down to direct Low attacks and so on. Only good I'm decent at tekken though, since they employ the back motion to block attacks so its OK with me there.

2D.

Bar perhaps Virtua Fighter, 3D fighting games are seriously lacking in... everything.

I was raised on the old 2Ds, and since you probably all know my affinity for Last Blade, you can tell I'm sticking to 'em. The mechanics and sprites are much more appealing to me.

Both are equal, in my opinion. They share more than enough pros and cons with each other to not be inherently better than one another.

It's true that 3D fighting games have yet to offer anything new or unique that breaks them out of the 2D fighting mold. Soul Calibur is the only notable game in my memory to have actually made good use of the 3D field in not only movement, but attacks.

Say, does Power Stone count?

2D will always be > 3D. Everything is created with much more meticulous attention to detail, and it's just more visually appealing. I never liked Mortal Kombat for this exact reason.

The only 3D "fighter" I can ever play is Smash Bros. Oh, and Ehrgeiz, but that's more for kicks and playing as FF characters.

Usually 2D makes for a better fighter, though Soul Calibur is a really sweet indepth fighting game, and so is Virtual Fighter (even though I suck at VF, its very deep). Mortal Kombat needs to make a 2.5D game, super graphic violence with good classic 2D gameplay. MKA was actually pretty good though.

2D fighters are superior to 3D fighters. That does not mean that 3D fighters are terrible. Just not as good as they could be. However, Soul Calibur is the only exception, in my opinion.

Im mostly a HUGE FAN of 2-D fighting games. (Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Marvel VS. series, Guilty Gear, Samurai Shodown, The King Of Fighter series...ETC)

And also 3-D...the ones I like are Virtua Fighter, (Part-1, Part-2, KIDS and Part-3 are the only ones I like) Dead Or Alive, Tekken, and Soul Calibur.

SSB... is 2D. >_> The graphics don't matter; it's the system itself...

They both have pros and cons, but I prefer 3D... 2D fighters always have the problem with pushing the enemy to an invisible wall and then pummeling until they die... In 3D, they/you can sidestep and go around, or something... (although some 2D have going through the enemy... I think. >_>)

Don't care, as long as I enjoy a game more than the other.

Which is the better platformer? 2-D or 3-D?

Terrible comparison.

There are dozens of top quality 3D platformers, and the number of amazing 3D platformers is roughly equal to the number of high quality 2D platformers.

This is not the case with fighting games, there is only one notable 3D fighter (Virtua Fighter), compared to a dozens of quality 2-D fighters(Guilty Gear, Hokuto No Ken, King of Fighters, Samurai Spirits/Showdown, Melty Blood, Street Fighter 3, Vampire/Darkstalkers etcetera).

hmm i personally dont consider tekken as 3-d, i just think its 2d with extra features such as moving around more. i dunno why though

so yeah, i've been playing tekken 5 Dark resurrections, Street fighter 3 third strike, and i should be playing guilty gear.

so i guess im leaning more toward a 2d fighters. plus the 2d fighting games are just faster paced then 3-d. cept maybe tekken cause that wavedashing makes the game fast

i just find 3-d fighters slow and boring.

I don't really count MK4 as a real 3D fighter, is was basically a 2D game with a side step into the background. MK:DA and MK:D really didn't do it for me. Of course the first real 3D Mortal Kombat was that beat em up with Jax <_<

Also MK2 is one of the best fighters ever.

soul Calibur is one of the few 3d fighters I own. Though I suck at it and its collecting dust, I enjoy its mechanics. They are one of the few 3D fighter that seams to have a good formula to it. Its buttons are: Kick, Punch, Vertical Slash, Horizontal Slash, Guard, Soul Charge. Granted, I hate games with a block button, but this game does offer it up as natural when playing so its good since there are parrys that you can do if timed correctly to unbalance your opponent and begin a chain of your own. This feature makes a 3D fighter worth it to play.

Now that I think about it, I actually prefer 3-D fighters to 2-D fighters regardless of how bad they are. I can't handle the sid-scrolling format in fighting games that are 2-D. Guaging the range for your attacks is awful and totall disproportionate. Plus, moving back and forth, as well as jumping (you have to press the UP button on the control stick/d-pad). The only 2-D fighting games I can think of that I actually like are SSB and DBZ. That's it.

I may like them, but they suffer from the same mechanics that make me dislike 2-D fighting games in general. You could say that I dislike both to an extent even though I technically prefer one over the other.

What? Your insulting me for laughing at his opinion that the game sucks (and never explains why it sucks) and then criticize me for not "countering something so dumb and base as "SC sucks" with some reasons why". I don't need to prove SC rules, I don't even know why he hates the series, how am I supposed to give reasons at all?. All I know is "All 3D fighting games (except VF) are lacking in everything" and "but Soul Calibur sucks".

No matter what format fighting games take place in... the best D will always be 40D.

I don't mean to be an instigator, but it countering an argument with something as simple as "lol" doesn't say anything. Or, are you just incapable of putting together a counter argument?

3D for me. Or as long the characters are rendered in 3D. Tekken and Soul Calibur fan here. Virtua Fighter is OK but I hate all the characters.

I just have a problem with 2D fighting games in general, especially those in anime style (Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, king of fighters) All of them look the same and I can't tell the difference. The characters seems to have a lot less fighting moves and every one of them either have magical powers or use a pet to aid in battle.
I like it when it's a bit more realistic. That doesn't mean I consider Tekken and Soul Calibur realistic because they aren't, but but I think 2D fighting games have gone a bit too far to the unrealistic side today. I mean that you can't create a good character unless they have magical powers or powers that defies gravity.

So I prefer games where they use actual fighting styles and stick to them.

He's making fun of him, it's not a counter argument.

I really hate that I had to point that out.
Re: 2D vs 3D. Fighting Games witch D is better?Topic%20Title

Soul Calibur sucks because it's an incredibly broken piece of shit.
The weapon system is the worst attempt at creating depth I've ever seen, yet it's probably the only reason anyone takes it seriously.

Best of all is the fact that a novice can go up against an adept an actually deal a decent amount of damage to him, hell, you could probably even fluke a round. Tekken is the bloody same, I played one of Tekken obsessed friends who has played Tekken DR every day for the past year, I don't even know basic combos for any of the characters, yet I consistently manage to win against him.

That shit doesn't happen in a well-made 2D fighter, adept players can destroy novices without getting a hit, and they can pull it off consistently. No fluky victories.

I have to agree with you happiness. Most 2D fighter games have high amounts of projectile characters, name 1 character in a 3D fighter, minus Street Fighter EX, and King of Fighters Max. Impact, that has a projectile?

Though through each style has its pros and cons on its styles. I myself in 2D fighters tend to lean towards those characters that can rush in and combo you and get away quickly. 3D fighters, I don't know, but my style of play can't be reproduced in a 3D fighter. I played VF5 with that style, and every time I get close a grab is initiated and I get thrown.

Frankly, Gear, ease of use is actually a selling point. I've never been a fan of arcane timing and button-mashing, and neither have a lot of people I've met.
