Hi there.

Well, since the GS3 translation project seems to be a year old, and no one seems willing to learn Broco's tools and do it, I've taken it upon myself to do so. I've started translating Case 2-1, and it's VERY rocky, but stable. I say this because.....I DON'T SPEAK JAPANESE!

That's right. I basically take the Japanese text out of the extracted script and put it into Google's translation tool. It's not great, but it's better than nothing, and surprisingly enough, it's usually not too hard to figure out what's going on with the text.

So I'm posting it here because I thought you folks might be interested. Capcom hasn't made an official announcement when they're going to localize or even port GS3 to the DS, so I got impatient and decided to do it myself. If anything, it's a nice learning experience in Rom Hacking, and I've got the free time right now to do it. (Recovering from surgery).

SO! Where does this leave you folks? Well, I've noticed that some of you might know Japanese. If you're quick about it, you can help. I can actually send you text to translate, as Broco, badass coder that he is, made the scripts really easy to take text from.

I'll have screenies up in a bit, as I'm working on some more right now. If anyone's interested, let me know in this thread, yeah?

Oh, and this is my first post. Thought I'd make it a good one. :)

EDIT: And here's a little animated gif snippet of a small bit of what I've done so far, just to show I'm not yanking your chain. :)

Cool idea, but seems kindda useless, as it is farely certain that Capcom will translate the 3rd game by now.

Like I said, this is more or less a learning experience for me, and believe it or not, trying to decipher moonspeak (machine translated Japanese to me) is actually kind of fun.

And I don't place my faith in any kind of certainty unless they make an official rock-solid statement. :)

I'm glad that your making the effort, but don't you think it would have been better to actually have a translator on your team before you started? That way, if you ever do get one, you're not going to have to go all the way back to the beginning and start over.

I work fast and the script editing is no big deal. I'm not too far into Case 2 that I couldn't go back and quickly make changes. However, if I did get translators, I'd want them to be quick about communicating with me so I can get things done at a steady pace.

Phoenix Drive is a Phoenix Wright H-Game that had a thread on the old forum. From what I have gathered, it's translation is on par with Zero Wing's "All your base are belong to us."

As a translator myself, I have to say I'm a bit offended by the "even a bad translation is better than nothing" mentality.

No website can come close to "translating" Japanese to English in a way that makes sense and is accurate. You can say "it's not hard to figure out" but since you don't speak the language, how could you ever know? The best you can hope to achieve is giving people a false impression of the text before they have a chance to play a professional version.

It's not like Google translator will help you much with Aiga and Zenitora anyway.

I would suggest not attempting a translation project without someone who can actually translate participating.

^What both of them said up there^
Translations are not so good on the computer. When I was translating comics, they gave me stuff that didn't make sense. I had to ask my mom to translate all of it and that took days. It's hard to translate stuff so I have a lot of respect for translators especially for the ones who translate games and comics. Saying that a bad translations is ok kind of makes me mad. What would happen if the translators of Phoenix Wright did it very bad?

Maybe I should have been clearer. I mean, I thought I came here asking if anyone wanted to help out with the translation. As far as being offended, well, I guess you'll just HAVE to be offended. I won't get into a flame war over this, as it's childish. The thing about Google, as it definitely is not the greatest source in the world, it's very helpful in getting the gist, so I actually can have some sort of context as to what's actually going on.

If anyone or no one wants to help, that's cool. If people want to be offended by my methods since I don't have a translator and am pretty much going this alone as a side thing, that's cool too. I don't begrudge anyone for it.

Doesn't mean it will stop me, though. Phoenix But I made my appeal for help. If anyone wants to help out, they're more than welcome to, and I would gratefully accept it.

I'm sure if you started this before JfA came out, you'd have much more support on restarting a translation for GS3. But since both the first and second games have come out, and the prospects of getting the third are looking pretty high at this point, such a process is probably going to be ignored in favor of hoping an official translation.

While I'm sure you'd probably do as best a job as you can, without an official translator your project may be doomed from the start. It's hard enough to translate the language properly, let alone doing it through a translation tool, most of which aren't very good.

And really, waiting a few more months for some official word isn't all that hard.

But you didn't, really. You said, "this is how I'm doing it, if you're fast enough, you can pitch in." You made it very clear that you were moving forward with or without the help of someone who speaks the language. Given that, I can't imagine anyone actually supporting such a project. If people are that desperate to know what happens in the game they might as well just read the Gamefaqs FAQ--it's Engrishy, but at least it's more accurate than anything Google will produce.

Anyway, knock yourself out. Yanni Yogi

I think even this is a bit of an overstatement. For example, I tried running a chunk of the GS4 blog through Google:

---

  [endo] “. with [kiyoretsu] shank”

Therefore [takumi] “as for such, impact importance”

The witness is made to call the “[gi] [ya] droppings” with [endo] “[koitsu]
Because it is [wake], don't you think?”

  [takumi] “. [endo]”

  It probably is [endo] “what?”

The [takumi] “your [tsu] [te], occasionally, the extent which is surprised
Old [kusa] it is and expresses don't you think?”

. As expected, “you see and pull out” settling in some kind of [katachi]?
In sale day, we would like you to experience by all means, think.

“It shakes” also “it is accustomed to being attached,” “you look at the witness who does not pass and, pull out” with
Please making call the “[gi] [ya] droppings”.

---

...I doubt that anyone get the gist of anything from that. Meekins And that's pretty much just standard Japanese -- like Croik said, when dealing with characters like Zenitora and Aiga who speak in dialect or very bizarre language (respectively), automated translation software is going to choke even more.

If this were a year or two ago, I actually would have been very interested in joining a GS3 translation project. But like everyone's saying... there's a reason that they stopped working on the last one. Yeah, there's been no official announcement of an English release for GS3 yet, but with the success of the first two games and the growing fan base, it's almost guaranteed that it'll come over... and probably sooner rather than later. (My guess would be January to March of next year.)

I just have a feeling that starting a fan translation at this point would be a lost cause (at best), and could even potentially raise the ire of Capcom (at worst.)

So I think I'll stick to translating GS4 info and such for now.

Hi NateTheHun if you use this walkthrough then your translation will be much more accurate

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadva ... 8765/28970

Scroll past the Japanese text and you will find a (brief) english translation of what's happening in each case. I think this is a good hobby to get through surgery because it's not easy unless you do something you enjoy with your time,I just don't think it will be well received by the public.

True, it would be good to know where this is going...

BTW, Have you started by the whole text part, or are you gonna translate Evidence/Profiles first? Eh?

Oh and somebody already told this, but the GameFAQs translated GS3 FAQ is a really good bet to begin with. Even if the characters have all their respective japanese names.

So far, I'm about 25% through Day 1 of Case 2. As for the evidence boxes, I've figured out where all of them are. Now it's a matter of extracting them, getting them translated, and then re-inserting them into the rom. And this is why I'm waiting until after I finish the script, at least.

The tools and documentation can be found at http://comebackcourt.sourceforge.net. It takes some practice to use them effectively, as they're pretty much command prompt tools. I also reccommend a tile editor, a hex editor, and a copy of VisualBoy Advance Developer's Edition. I'm also using JWPCE (Free Japanese word processor with built in Kanji search and dictionary) and Notepad2. As some of the graphics are LZ compressed, I'm using a couple of decompression tools to help with that, the evidence boxes being a good example.

Since it's just me, it's going pretty slow, but the Gamefaqs thing should help a lot.

Not done. Not even close. There's a LOT of text to translate, and then, even after that, it has to be cleaned up to make it work right with the variable-width font hack implemented. And I'm not releasing anything until I have all of Case 2 ready, not just the first day.

Hell, for all I know, by the time I get the second case translated, Capcom might drop a release date for PW3 on us. Will Powers

Have you started at least the trial part? (I know a text based game is long to translate, but it would be good to have news of updates in the meanwhile.)

On another note, since I was tired of waiting, I did the whole case 2 in japanese (Don't know japanese, so I used the FAQ on GameFAQs). Started a bit of case 3.
