Have you played the first game yet? Alot of why he wants to save him is explained there.

He wanted to save Miles Edgeworth. Back when they knew each other in fourth grade, his dream was to become a Defense Attorney, but apparently that never happened. Phoenix heard rumors of Miles becoming a "Demon Prosecutor" and set out to try and put his childhood friend's life back on track.

Spoiler: First Game
Nick became a defense attorney so that he could meet up with Edgeworth (who was becoming rather renowned for being "the demon prosecuter") and save him from... well, himself. He didn't know anything about Manfred or Germany of DL-6 at the time; he was just trying to figure out why Edgeworth didn't seem like Edgeworth anymore, and since he wasn't answering his letters, he was forced into meeting him through other avenues; like dedicating his life to the law so they could run into each other in court.

And this is why I ship Phoenix/Miles.

I'd assume we've all played the first game, but just to be safe since this isn't marked for spoilers I'll put my response in a spoiler tag.
Spoiler: 1-4
We know from 1-4 that Phoenix found out about Edgeworth from a newspaper heading where he's called a "demon prosecutor." He wanted to know what had changed his old friend so much and wrote countless letters, none which were answered. He then decided the only way to meet Edgeworth and bring him back to his old self was to meet him in court because in court Edgeworth couldn't avoid him like he'd been doing.
