First off, if you don't know what's Lost Odyssey, it's a JRPG made only for the Xbox 360 by Mistwalker - the studio headed by ex-Squenix CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi, with contributions from one of the original creative directors and Nobuo Uetmetsu (I think he's in private business now so he's more of a hired contributor).

Lost Odyssey is their latest JRPG project, due about next year in Japan, and prolly end of 08 for the rest of the world.

It's about a man, Kaim, who has lived for a thousand years but watched the world, and yet also has missing memories. There are at least, 2 other confirmed immortals the same as him. It's hard to say exactly what the plot is, except that there's an evil empire that wishes to resurrect lost magic for its own evil ends and Kaim and company are going to stop him. It'll take place over different time periods, so you'd prolly be doing something else later.

Anyway, it's VERY hard to explain why you should take notice of this game, not until you see it for yourself

First off, this sums up my attraction to Lost Odyssey the best: Best.RPG.Cutscene.EVER!

PS: The woman is immortal, if you're wondering after watching this.

Here are the best trailers for the game from GameTrailers.com:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Previous/current works by Mistwalker also include Blue Dragon for Xbox 360 (not great, but not that horrible, most reviews were accurate despite the fanboys =/), and ASH Archiac Sealed Heat (strategy RP for DS, just released in Japan).

They should call it Lost Cause, because it looks fucking mediocre.

Yeah I can't wait, people may say "mediocre" but I say it goes back to the genre's roots. The JRPG has been suffering from all this anime, Tetsuya Nomura, omg cloud is a bishie nonsense for too long. I can't wait for Lost Odyssey to reestablish the base for the genre. Not to mention, the short story the author wrote for it was pretty darn good itself, which can be found here:

I want this thing to be EPIC.

Ah, thank you! Gawd, I hate people who keep saying 'FFX clone' or something like that.

Newsflash people, FFX is a game where the main character was designed based on the Japanese national football team's captain (circa 2000-2001). Similarly, FFVIII's Squal was based on Gackt and River Phoenix.

When the main characters are made to resemble pop figures, there's nothing redeeming in the game. At all. It's obviously made to cater to pop-culture entranced teenagers.

I mean, seriously! At least for once we have evidence that at least ONE of the main chars isn't a goddamn virgin! She's a freaking mother! That's just so...refreshing!

Erm, the genre's roots = Dragon Quest, a franchise that has remained virtually unchanged over 20 years. Why do we need an inferior product around to return us to the roots that never truly went went away?

Also, Cry On, will be better.

Well, less the JRPG's roots and more Final Fantasy's. Though I'd like this game to be more like 6 and less like 1-3. And call me what you will, but I never really liked Dragon Quest ='/

Though, I actually DO like Final Fantasy X. It was one of the last JRPGs I liked, say what you will about Tidus, despite his design (another thing you can attribute to Tetsuya Nomura) I think he was a pretty good character. I liked how he was pretty optimistic about things when everyone else was down and out, the opposite of past FF main characters that would just mope when things got tough. That part of his character really stood out to me. And I mean a sports star was never something a main character of an RPG had been, most of them had either been soldiers or thieves, so it was a nice change of pace. The story was alright, and certain parts of that game were pretty awesome (like the march to Zanarkand.) That game by no means is perfect, but by no means is it bad.

I don't necessarily HATE 7 or 8 either, but they're way overdone and overrated. It's time for something else. If there was ever a Final Fantasy that I thought got things perfect concept wise it's 9. That game pretty much incorporated all the redeeming factors of the originals with the ones from the new games and I hope that's what Lost Odyssey ends up doing as well. I've been looking forward to this game for awhile, so I hope Sakaguchi and his team over at Mistwalker don't let me down!

I looked it up on Wikipedia and found it was 4 disks long!

How long do you think the game is?

Too much gameplay, not enough cutscenes.

Final Fantasy is a JRPG whose roots is as a mediocre Dragon Quest clone that became more popular state side than it ever did in Japan due to it's "pretty" graphics and fmv. While popular in Japan, it's no rival to DQ. DQ is in a league of it's own.

not to rain on your parade, but do you really think a barely recognized studio that put out one, barely noticeable Dragon Quest game is going to then somehow put out a game that will re-establish the base of a whole genre? Lost Odyssey will never, ever replace the base which is Dragon Quest. Not Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest. No game ever sells as much as Dragon Quest, JRPG wise.

Just cause she's a mother doesn't mean anything. That's what women are supposed to do. If she were just a rampaging slut who slept around, you'd have something new--no, wait, then she'd just be the OTHER stereotype of women in mass media. It's not refreshing at all, it's just one of three choices: Virgin (Angel), Angel who became Mother (Socially acceptable sexual encounter that brings life), and Slut (Demon) who either dies or is reformed or both. Not to be confused with "bad girls" like, say, Paine (ugh why did I use her oh well), who are sort of the 4th type of women, which is "man without a penis."

Why be imaginative? Imagination doesn't sell shit.
