After JFA Case 1, I thought it would be interesting to go through and try to figure out if a PW character was right handed, left handed, or Ambidextrous.

I'll start with our hero, Phoenix, to show how I deduct:
(All animations from the main site, hosted on my Photobucket to not suck bandwidth or anything.)

Image

In this pose we see Phoenix pointing with his left hand, a point to left handed.

Image

In this pose we see Phoenix rubbing his chin with his left hand, a point to left handed.

Image

In this pose we see Phoenix holding a paper in his left hand and tapping it with his right. After monitoring myself, being right handed, I came to the conclusion the one would hold something in his regular hand, and gesture it with his off hand. A point to left handed.

Image

In this pose we see Phoenix holding his head with his left hand and resting his right on his hip. After monitoring myself I came to the conclusion the one would hold ones head with their regular hand more comfortably than their off hand. A point to left handed.

Image

Phoenix's famous two-handed deskslam, and equal point to both.

Image

And finally, Phoenix's to-handed head grab, another point to both.

Total:
Left - 4
Right - 0
Both - 2

I believe it's safe to say that Phoenix is a lefty. Any thoughts?

I think it's just done that way from an artistic viewpoint so that Phoenix's mannerisms don't block his view to the player, much how the posecutors are mirrored for the same effect. It really wouldn't help to proof their dominant hands either way in that regard.

Your probably right on that point, I was just using Phoenix as an example. I plan on focusing mainly on the characters that are viewed from the front, since they should be less handed for camera angle.

I always thought that too. I did consider this once, and see, if Phoenix used his right hand to point and such, it would end up blocking his face, expressions, and everything else.

So while he may in fact be left handed, it would most likely not be not because the designers have some infatuation with left-handed protagonists, but simply to make the game work better.

The way the game is set up, all defense attorneys will point with their left hand, and all prosecuting attorneys will point/whip/drink with their right hand.

Basically, it's like what Blademaster said about not disrupting the person's view or animations; I think that Phoenix's Objection! point would be dumbed down if he pointed with his right arm anyways; he'd either have to turn his back to the player- which, actually, would be a cool sprite- to reach the full way, or do an Edgeworth point with his arm bent (far less dramatic).
Really, I think the only character that was actually given a specific writing hand was Dustin Prince.

Although in my opinion, I think that Phoenix is left-handed.

Yeah, I'll check the more camera friendly manga tomorrow for more evidence towards Phoenix. Right now I'm working on Larry.

Oh, if anyone else wants to do this for other characters, go ahead. There are plenty.

Adrian is most likely right-handed, as she holds the book, card, and her glasses in her right hand. However, she turns the pages of the book with her left hand, and in her 'suprised' animation places her left hand on her chest.
Regina's only hand motion is holding the staff, which is held in her left - meaning she's probably left handed.
Zenitora does all of his motions with both hands, but he doesn't have that many.
Matt is most likely ambidexterous, or pretty close - he dials on his wristphone with his left hand, and hairflips with his left hand in both instances. However, he holds his brandy glass in his right hand as well as it being the first hand used in the faceclaw animation.
Phoenix is probably left-handed - in his 'young' sprites, he removes the mask from his face with his left hand.

Huh...maybe I'm a bit odd, but I'm righty, but I tend to hold things with my left if I'm going to be doing something with it, like turning the page or gesturing to it. So..I dunno.

Of course, again, ignoring the purely artistic necessities of the poses. :P

The rest use both, so I'd say he's Ambidextrous.

I think if we use this sprite as an example, it'd be more of a Left Hand +1.

Only because if Larry is holding the paints in his right hand, then that means he must hold the brush in his left hand- and paint with it.

Good point. Larry is a little more of a lefty then I thought.

Spoiler: GS3
And, Capcom being as lazy as in the Mega Man series, they simply inverted Edgeworth's sprites when he takes up as a DA.

Not that I blame them.

Maya: Right hand in 4 animations, no left hands. Maya is right handed.

Mia: Right handed in all her animations (in all three games - except a single animation in the third.) Mia is right handed.

Gumshoe: One right hand pose. Gumshoe is right handed.

Payne: Might be because of him being a prosecutor, but right handed in all 4 visable animations. Payne might be right handed.

Cindy:
Image

Cindy is left handed.

Sahwit: Three right handed animations. Sahwit is right handed.

April: Only one animation with visable hand. Left hand is raised in thinking, right on suport. Testing shows: April is right handed.

(fanbook shows equal signs of left and right handed.)

Misty: Misty is right handed.

Judge: Judge bangs with right hand. The Judge is right handed.

Will Powers:
Image

Will Powers is left handed.

Jack Hammer:

Image

Jack hammer is right handed (Actually remembers to take the Samurai Spear with the left hand though).

Your dominant hand doesn't do everything.

I'm right-handed, so I write with my right hand and utilise a mouse with my right hand.

I hold drinks with my left hand and carry umbrellas with my left hand.

So, by your logic, I'm ambidextrous.

But anyway, I agree. I don't think the developers have thought of which hand is dominant for anyone, just what hand looks best if used in a pose.

Don't know if this counts, but since the left side of the brain controls academics, it can be said that Phoenix is right handed, because he is indeed smart, or he wouldn't have become a lawyer. But then, the reverse could hold true as well, since the right side of the brain controls creativity and some of Phoenix's theories are very creative (eg. guessing what really happened to Gregory ).

This has no bearing on anything. You are required to salute with your right hand. however, I do believe he's right handed because he cut his left hand, meaning the knife was in his right.

The left side of your brain controls the right side of your body, including the right hand, meaning that if you use your right hand more often, then you also use the left side of the brain more often. Vice versa for the right side of the brain.

This being known, if a person is smart, that means they use their left side of the brain most often, therefore this person is right handed. Hope this is easy and clear to understand.

That actually brings up a couple odd things... which should most likely be adressed in another thread. Sadshoe

Personally, I just think your way of thinking determines the hand you use. So to complicate it less, people worked backwards. Godot

This is absolute rubbish. One side of the brain doesn't control one side of the body, both sides work to control the entire body. Most people's hearts are located on the left side of their body, does this mean a person who uses their right side more has a healthier heart or lower blood pressure?

I agree with Blademaster_Orca. The creators probably wanted to give the game the best perspective they could. Otherwise, the lawyers' "Objection!"s would lose some of their meaningfulness.

As for Phoenix, I see him as more of a right-hander after double-checking these screenshots.

Unless there are some shots which he used his left hand, it's best to say that he's ambidextrous.

I don't have any knowledge on which dominant hand can do the better, so I can't say anything more. And by the way, gamefan06, that avatar doesn't automically mean that he's left-handed, it could have been flipped the other way. just had to point that out.

Ah, maybe it's just I've seen too many people shaking hands left-handed where I live. I must be stuck in this strange world for too long that I don't realize what should be done in the other way.

Even so, I was just stating my opinion. I tend to say whatever comes to mind sometimes.

EDIT: Now I remember now, it looks like I haven't been completely wrong about Phoenix being right-handed. There's this screenshot from GS3 that has Phoenix using his right hand. Check my previous post here for it, and please pardon my unusual forgetful self.

(I don't know if I'm right about that, though... maybe Phoenix only had to use his right hand because his left one had been set up with antibodies in tubes and stuff.)

Over here, which is true for the Netherlands but also for the rest of Northern Europe, I think, people always shake with their right hands because it's bad manners to do otherwise, or something. It's a little silly, but people always shake hands with their right hand here Godot Don't know about Japan, though.

The Japanese don't often shake hands, they bow. I don't know if this is alright to do so in the courtroom, although it'd be funny to see the lawyers bowing to each other as if it's the beginning of a karate battle.

Does that mean if I'm smarter than a person who is left handed, I've defied nature?

It's just a theory.
Not proven completely. :\

:\

People shake with their left hands.
For all we know, Phoenix could have injured one of his arms and can use it just as well as the other one.

I can. Except sometimes in writing. :\

Being right handed or left handed really doesn't have anything to do with anything...

Actually many people do have a "dominant" brain side, and it often goes along with their handed-ness (leftbrain=right hand, rightbrain=left hand). It's not as simple as smart side/ creative side, though, it has more to do with how your brain processes information. For example, the right side of the brain contains the part of the brain that defines and describes things using images, so a very right brain dominant person is likely to remember peoples' faces very well but possibly forget names easily. This may be why you see many left handed painters. The exact way the brain works varies from person to person, but I think it's still possible to make at least some sort of guess of a person's dominant brain side (and therefore handed-ness) based on their behavior.

This has some truth in it I guess. I can remember faces but I can't remember names. People get mad at me a lot because I can't remember their names.

Hm...
I was originally left-handed, but my mother wanted me to be right-handed, so she made me use my right hand more....Though I'm predominately right-handed, I can be a bit ambidextrous when need be.

Hmm....and I think Bren has given me inspiration again. It would be cool to see Nick pointing with his back turned to the player...

I'm a lefty and I shake with both of my hands. Besides, for all we know, Phoenix could be shaking with his right hand in that pic because Maya reached out with her right hand (although I haven't played GS3 so I don't know what's happening in that scene).

And like Danbo Daxter said, not everybody does everything with their dominant hand. It is actually possible for a person to write better with one hand and naturally throw better with the other, for example.

:phoenix: Lefty-Objection pose.
:edgeworth: Righty-DL-6 flashback screen shot and objection pose.
:darke: Righty-Screen shot shows him holding knife
:goodman: Both?-His handwriting is(no offense to Leftys)bad, which suggests he's left handed, but SL-9's screenshot (where it shows the entire crew, save for Gant and Lana)shows him leaning on his right.
:jake: Both-whiskey bottle and shaving sprite are left handed, but the sprite where he's holding his hat on his chest and his normal pose are right handed.

That's all I could be bothered with XD.

Sadly, studies show that forcing people to change their handedness at a young age tends to have some damaging effects on the way their brain works. It's working against how your brain is naturally set up so it kinda messes around with things. It's nothing really major or anything, though. If you taught yourself to use your right hand rather than forced yourself, then it probably isn't even an issue. This also applies to what happens in art classes, sometimes, where teachers hear about the left brain/right brain thing and assume if their students draw with their left hand it'll switch how they're thinking and let them draw with more creativity. Switching to left hand won't make you more creative and it won't do you any favors. Learning to use your right brain for right brained tasks will, though (and vice versa).

Also, right brain doesn't control everything to do with intuition, while the left brain doesn't control everything to do with the verbal/analytical. They really work together. You can be perfectly normal with only one half of your brain too. On the other hand, you can also sever the left/right brain connection and things get really weird ^_^. In one study it was like the left eye sees only what it sees, the right eye sees only what it sees, and the two brains process the information from their respective eye seperately.

Oh, and it's not just "I'm right handed" "I'm left handed", but usually people are a mix. Still, you can be very strongly right handed and still be a very competant artist (like the person who wrote "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" and vice versa.

This is getting far too long so I'll stop here. This was mostly going on memory from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (EXCELLENT book) and Psychology class.

I can't believe nobody mentioned this.

Spoiler: 1-4
Yogi shoots with his left hand. Edgeworth picked the gun up with his right.

Yanni's a lefty, Edgey's a righty. Either that or they could be ambi, but I really doubt that in Yogi's case.

Eh, I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents of :varanbaran: being left handed, as I haven't found any poses to the contrary. Just thought I'd mention it because I noticed it earlier today.
