Luke Atmey cheated the locks
Spoiler:
when you break them you his secret was that he was allegedly knocked out by Masked de masque
WTF? And also when Phoenix presents the magatama are the suspects hypnotized to tell the truth or what?

I also wondered about that. If the psyche lock is supposed to hold all your secrets, then technically the psyche locks shouldn't have broken when Phoenix claimed Atmey was knocked out. They should've stayed there until he discovered the whole truth.

My opinion of this is that the Psyche Locks only react when Phoenix has reason to believe that something is being hidden. If someone has a good enough story which is supported by the evidence presented
Spoiler: "3-2"
Such as Luke's story being backed up by the bent Shichishitou
Thus, if someone is hiding something but Phoenix has no reason to suspect it, he can't dig into it. Hence,

Spoiler: "3-2, 3-5"
Luke not having been hit by anyone, as well as "Iris" being Dahlia during the final investigation in 3-5
remain hidden simply because Phoenix has no reason to think there's any further lie. See also, any time that "Ini" referred to her "sister" working at Dr Grey's hospital in 2-2.

I think that's just an example of the Psyche Locks being used in a way that's most convenient, even if it doesn't make sense :P.

But there's nothing about the magatama having hypnotic powers. All it does is allow Phoenix to see that someone is harboring a secret.

as for your question about it hypnotising people to tell the truth,
by the time phoenix has broken the locks, they have nothing left to hide behinad and have to tell the truth..

Remember that in case 2-2, Morgan outwits the lie-detecting powers of the magatama, which I believe are extremely complex and depend on Phoenix state of mind and the exact wording involved. Morgan spouted off some extremely convoluted statement, and Phoenix internally comments: (Somehow I feel as if I've just been made fun of in the worst way possible.) I believe that is because Morgan defeated his lie detector.

Makes sense, I guess mystical relics take word play literally. After most of all know about Matt in JFA.

I think the reason people spill the beans is because Phoenix is waving around the magatama in front of their faces. They think he's psycho.

True, or else you'd know the murderer that much faster.

That's the main problem, isn't it? But I think the mental acrobatics required to be willing to divulge the secret while narrowly steering the conversation past it are not to be scoffed at. I also think that a key requirement for the Magatama to kick in is for the secret keeper to be on the defensive, so Phoenix surprising or yelling at people is probably a good way to reveal secrets being kept.

No one mentioned 2-2 yet, when "Ini Miney" supposedly knows Dr. Grey through her sister. And I STILL believe that 2-4's Engarde lock didn't state what it should've stated... still, it is fun to know that there are 2 ways to break his first-of-5 locks. :larry2:
