I doubt but like, 4 people on this forum will even know who he is, and I'm one of them.

I always assumed he'd be around forever, writing satire well into the future. We'll probably never see another wit like his; and even if one appears, no one will want to admit it until it's too late.

On the paradoxical side, this now means that most English lit. departments will consider him important, since the annoying adage is that your writing can't be fully appreciated as important until you're dead.

I thought that was mostly true for painting. I don't know how it is in English lit. departments, but in French lit., you have to be born and raised in France, while also being dead for anyone to really recognize you.

Still, I absolutely adored his books and style of writing.

Yeah, it's true--although in modern academics it tends (usually) to be an injoke. One professor however said the main reason scholars don't like to write about authors who are still alive is that it's much easier to critique someone who can't write you angry letters.

It actually happened to that same professor--he was presenting a paper at a conference, and the author of the poetry he was discussing got wind of it and didn't like the paper, so he wrote the Prof. angry letters. When he learned the Prof. was (then) a grad student, the author wrote back a sheepish letter of apology.

Anyway, I'm considering picking up some Vonnegut to 'mourn,' mostly stuff I haven't read yet.

Honestly, that's just immature of the author and probably the biggest reason as to why certain people shouldn't be allowed to write.

I think the best message anyone could write about Kurt Vonnegut, would be "Kurt Vonnegut is dead. So it goes."
