Emmy Rossum has booked the female lead in 20th Century Fox's "Dragonball," based on the popular Japanese manga.

Justin Chatwin stars as Goku, a warrior who protects the Earth from a stream of rogues bent on dominating the universe. James Marsters plays the film's villain, Lord Piccolo.

Rossum takes on the role of Bulma, whose father's Dragon Ball is stolen by Piccolo.

Story is based on Akira Toriyama's manga that has spawned graphic novels, a long-running TV series and more than 25 videogames.

Pic is shooting in Mexico and L.A.

Actor-director-writer Stephen Chow is producing. "Final Destination" helmer James Wong is directing from a script he penned. Ben Ramsey wrote an earlier draft.

Rossum's film credits include "Poseidon" and "The Phantom of the Opera." She also recently released the album "Inside Out" (Geffen Records).

Dragon Ball producer said to have been unable to add more Chinese stars
The Japanese news website Searchina picked up on Chinese newspaper reports on December 17 that Stephen Chow, the director of Shaolin Soccer and a producer on Twentieth Century Fox's live-action Dragon Ball movie, unsuccessfully tried to bring more Chinese actors into the cast of Dragon Ball. The reports name Edison Chen (Infernal Affairs, Initial D, The Grudge 2) and Kitty Zhang Yuqi (Chow's upcoming CJ7) among the actors and actresses that Chow attempted to hire for the production. The movie is an adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga. The announced cast includes Justin Chatwin (Son Goku), James Marsters (Piccolo), Jamie Chung (Chi Chi), Emmy Rossum (Bulma), Eriko Tamura (Mai), and Joon Park (Yamcha).

Before I saw Goku goes to high school, I thought that would have been Gohan. He passes more as a Gohan for me. This is just plain sad though. This movie has destroyed anything decent that could have come from the dragonball series.

Son Goku's son Gohan wasn't in Dragonball, that's Z.

Actually, yes he was. The manga series was never called Dragonball Z. I just assumed Gohan because Goku was never smart enough to go to school. He was too busy running around naked and fighting people while flying on his cloud. You think by now I'd learn not to assume.

You know, in the beginning, if they said very, very loosely adapted and placed it in big, bold letters, I probably would have thought this was okay.

And what other things were getting live-action adaptations again?

I mean, so far, Speed Racer is the only thing that seems to come off as finished and actually done while looking good.

Yea. It was because of Gohan that Picollo became one of the good guys in the first place.

I'm curious now though, will they keep Picollo green, or are they gonna screw him up like they did Goku. Probably make him all pink or something. Also makes me wonder if their big fight will be at the tournament. I mean Goku spent all his time training with Kami, so he never really had Picollo as a threat until the tournament, which meant no time for school. This movie just totally makes me wonder as to why these people are doing this in the first place if they aren't even wanting to stay remotely true to the story. I'd say its for the money, but the way this is looking, I'd highly doubt that.

If they're specifically stating it's a US Dragon Ball film adaptation, there's a huge chance that they're referring to the 'first' series, considering they are differentiated upon by the inclusion or lack of Z regardless of manga. Which was what I was talking about.

This just reminds me of the other live action dragon ball movie.

Also I never get why a movie can 'ruin' an already established work. The manga's been around longer than most of you have been alive; I doubt a bad movie is going to change its popularity.

So what if stuff is different? Meh, it'd be kinda dumb to do the exact same shit for the series since the 80s. :/
Whatever I don't care, Dragonball is Dragonball to me, I'll like it no matter how bad they screw it up anyways. XP

The company is trying to appeal to a wider audience by putting Goku in a school setting. They're making it more realistic for the average Joe Moviewatcher. If they only tried to appeal to the uber-DBZ fans, then they might as well just release a TV-only movie, instead of a feature film.

At least, that's my take on the situation.

Man, if I were making the film, I'd stick to the original as much as I could. But the fact is, I'm not making the film. If the director, producer, editor, writer, or whoever it is that thought they could broaden their audience by making Goku attend school, that's their problem. I was just stating my opinion on the matter, and my opinion was that they wanted a larger audience, therefore they made it seem a little more realistic by adding a school setting for the main character.

let me guess, instead of saying "based on a fictionaly story", they will say "inspired by a fictional story".

By the way, how does everyone fit into the plotline now that we know this movie has no relation tot he real dbz plotline?

Lord Picollo is an evil king who demands all the crops from the villagers and all of the village maidens to add to his harem that he has in his big sportin' castle.

I actually enjoy the Mario movie... Just for what it is. It has very little to do with the game series, but it's stupid fun. (And that guy was taking the whole "Mario raised me!" thing out of context.)

...Anyway... Image This is turning out different from what I imagined.

Yes, this movie is going to probably be little-to-nothing like the Dragon Ball we know and love, but who's to say it'll definitely be a bad movie? I mean, the film adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle is significantly different from the novel, but it's excellent. I just think everyone should relax and give it a chance. Lord knows I heard all the complaints that purists had about the Transformers movie, but I thought it was rather fun. Don't get all hyped up to hate something, and you may find yourself pleasantly surprised. Image

Wow, this is the apocalypse. A really minor plot detail has changed; I'd better go hide in the bunker. :P

I can understand the dissapointment, but I personally don't care about the minor differences in a movie adaptation as long as it's mostly like the original. As long as Piccolo looks like Picollo, Goku stays neive and kick-ass, the Dragon Balls and Shenlong/Shenron stay as they are, and the plot stays similar then I don't give a darn about him going to school.

I wonder what happened to his tail though.

Edit: Also, Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi could be interesting. The problem would be if he was too serious. Also, he should grow the Roshi Beard, as it is distinctive.

Answer: I don't know Chow Yun-Fat's career. I do know that Roshi is a silly womanising perv. Thus, I made a blind guess that Chow Yun-Fat played mostly serious characters, and that Roshi would get toned down.

Okay, they ruined it, there was a bit of hope. But now, this might turn out worse than 'The Magic Begins'. Hell, this might be worse than every movie on IMDB's bottom 100 list. THIS MIGHT TURN OUT EVEN WORSE THAN ONE MISSED CALL.

ONE. MISSED. CALL.
