And my question earlier wasn't "was sakurai making a real single player game",

I was asking about how much emphasis he put on how deep it would be. From the updates, we can barely tell what the story is, let alone how deep it is

Fix'd the typo.

And to be honest, a deep story for a multi-combat game?

When has that ever happened?

*everyone glares at Wrestlemania*

....... KIDDING! JEEZ!

But yeah, there are many games in the fighting genre with deep stories. One of course being Soul Calibur, among others.

I recall an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto that said that while Sakurai wanted a better single-player experience for Melee, he was instructed to expand the multiplayer first. With the time/budget for Brawl, he was able to do both this time.

Famitsu or something. That magazine that over-rates games.

If there's anything Famitsu doesn't usually do, it's overrate games. It might happen once in a long while, like with Nintendogs and (depending on your taste) Final Fantasy XII, but otherwise they can be rather harsh. Getting a really high score out of them, especially a perfect score of 40/40, isn't something to just ignore. Unless you hate/distrust them for a handful of undeserving reviews, or even just for their popularity, but that's a matter of opinion and a different issue altogether.

It is a different voice from Melee and will probably be the one for the game. I don't exactly remember how it was in Melee, but I'm fairly sure both the english and japanese versions did have the same announcer, just different phrases and character names. So we'll probably have this announcer, as well.

Wow, no one updated.

Olimar's Final Smash "End of Day", one of the few final smashes where you can't stop it when it starts. If you played Pikmin you know at the end of the day you head back to your ship so that you don't get destroyed by the monsters. Well that's the idea behind his final smash.

Image
Used his "up" B to snake the FS Ball, nice.

Image

Image
Leaves the whole fight

Image

Image
Crash landing on them MF'S!!

This final smash is really only useful in a multi Brawl it says, but the ship landing at the end may be more helpful than the whole FS during a one-on-one.

Here's another commercials with Olimar at the end performing his FS, plus Snake getting kicked in the face.

I'm just saying the reviews that I've seen have been a little over-rated. I don't have anything against the magazine.

As for the update, it was expected.

.........

NO ONE CARES???

Anyways, today they talk in more detail about the stickers.

Image

As you can see at the bottom of the screen, it says a "category", and a number. These stickers can be placed underneath "trophy" bases of our character, and they upgrade your character's abilities.

Image

The bigger the sticker, the greater the power-up.

Some power ups even have special abilities like being thrown less of a distance upon being damaged!

However, a few pointers:

1. Any sticker you attach, can't be taken off.
2. Any sticker you attach, CAN be "adjusted" and moved around.
3. Certain stickers can only be used by certain characters.
4. No "point merging"! Here's the example they posted:

"So, for example, if you had [Leg] Attack +4 and [Leg] Attack +6 stickers on the same trophy base, the added [Leg] Attack bonus wouldn’t be +10—it’d simply be treated as if you’d only put down the +6 sticker."

And if you don't like placing them, but want some on, THEY GOT 2 WORDS FOR YA: RANDOM BUTTON!

Image

An example of a "finished" product's abilities.

Image

You apply a sticker, it's gone forever. HOWEVER, if you only place "doubles" etc., you'll never be short a certain sticker.

Depending on the difficulty, you will find rarer and rarer stickers.

Image
WHAT HAPPENED TO "VERY EASY"???

If you complete a level, you can re-play it on a harder difficulty immediately, to up your sticker count and rare-sticker amounts! However...

If you get game over... you lose HALF the stickers you added.

Image

And one last thing: Sticker "upgrades" Apply to The Subspace Emissary's mode ONLY, so... no, you can't face off against your newb friend with a super-powerful Capt. Olimar.

WRESTLEMANIA'S OPINION:

Wow... this SEEMS like I've seen it before, but... hmm......

The idea for this seems... cheap. I'd prefer to just go into the mode, "clean" trophy base, beat the game, and reap rewards, but... meh, Sakurai knows what e's doin', eh?

But seriously, I probably won't use this unless it's with the Random feature. I don't like spending time doing this sort of thing (case in point: building Gummy ships in the KH games... just no).

Smash Bros. + Single player game + RPG element = suck

I really don't like the direction this is heading :x Single player is cool, but power-ups outside of the actual single player game is stupid for a fighter. I don't like this at all.

I meant outside of the gameplay. Meaning, I'm fine with in-game powerups a la Super Mario and mushrooms, but I've never been a fan of having to upgrade items and weapons outside of the actual game a la Soul Caliber.

I don't know, I only played SC2 a few times.

My basic point is that upgrading characters in a fighter outside of the gameplay itself sucks, in my opinion. I'm sure it'll be fun, but I'll utilize the stickers as sparingly as possible.

I just came across this whilst watching a trailer. Source

Considering the amount of characters on that screen is exactly 14 and that's how many characters Melee started with, I have reason to believe that this is the starting roster. If there is evidence that this is not the case, then I'd like to see it, and if this isn't the starting roster, what is it?
Does we even do these things anymore?

Wait, what? That doesn't make any sense! If that is the starting roster, Kirby would be an unlockable character! KIRBY!? And Meta Knight, Pit, Sonic, Ike, and Diddy Kong in the starting roster? I'd understand some of them being in at the beginning as they've all been announced already, but leaving Kirby off is baffling. Something's fishy here.

Not really, if you think about it, considering several characters from Melee have yet to be announced and it's getting really close to the Japanese release date; in other words, Brawl is going to reshuffle the series - and the starting roster, from the looks of it. (I'm at a loss as to why they chose Meta-Knight over Kirby, mind you; maybe the starting roster varies based on country? That's a long shot, though.)

One thing is for certain: this screen is not from the final Japanese build; if it were, they'd be calling him Koopa instead of Bowser.
Does we even do these things anymore?

That isn't a trailer, thats just GameTrailers personal 'Here are the characters' posts. I think the screenshot's from the new demo at the WHobby. So I don't think it's the starting characters.

That, and I think Kirby wouldn't be picked over Meta Knight. And I think you have to unlock Sonic.

You forget that Sonic is unlockable and most of those characters are there for show, so that's not it. We discussed that before, but we know that isn't the starting roster.

Asura Velotix wrote:

And I found the contradictory evidence myself this time round. Whoops. :P

Apparently that last link is from the WHobby demo, so then the question is, as I asked before: what is that Gametrailers demo based on??

As for the starting roster:

1) 11 of the roster are effectively confirmed simply by the offical US box art, although it's not concrete proof. I've made a copy of it here if you want to refer to it. It doesn't make sense for a character to be on the boxart and then not playable when you first play the game.
2) The second demo footage shows what looks like the most likely starter roster to me, to be frank. Bearing in mind all twelve characters from the original were starters in Melee (except Luigi) but that some of them appear to have been dropped, chances are the four former unlockables are unlockable once more, or axed. I find it hard to believe Captain Falcon has been kept quiet this long for no reason.

Based on past experience with SSB, SSB:M, and the screenshots provided, chances are the final roster has only 23 characters unless they employ a graphics cheat to worm another line in for characters; three rows of eight minus one for the random selection icon.

Excluding in-game character changes (ZSS and Sheik), 23 characters have been announced so far. In which case, perhaps all the characters have been announced already and a large portion of the Melee roster was axed, or they're going to be crafty and shoehorn in up to eight extra characters and keep quiet about them until release (I'm guessing they'll stop at 30 at the absolute most), or Sora and Nintendo are being deliberately deceptive to keep everyone guessing.

We'll know soon enough.
Does we even do these things anymore?

Well, they said it themselves that Sonic and Snake were unlockable in one of those links a few pages back. It was in some magazine, maybe an interview?
We already expect Sonic and Snake to be unlockable, that roster was old, it was shown way back at the E for all event.
At another event Sonic was replaced by Kirby and another character was replaced by another. I think that incident was Jump Festa.

It's been proven that Sonic is a unlockable along with Snake, here scroll down a bit you'll see the magazine scan. If you look around a bit you'll also see other bits of info confirming that.

As for the roster we don't know, just going to have to wait. I also think there's going to be other 30 characters, if they threw in characters like Olimar I think we have to look forward to.

EDIT: Got to it before I could Bleach, darn you!! :edgy:

That was the menu screen for the E3 demo. Sakurai has stated many times that sonic will be unlockable. Plus the only demo's that had sonic were featured at E3 and som other event a few weeks prior.

On a side note, there's a rumor going around that brawl will have about 48 characters total. Did anyone else hear anything about this, because that seems like too many characters

It was on brawl central for a while, but it was taken down during the last update. There was a thread about it on some forums: http://smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=138264

No one's too sure about how ligitamate it actually is. The more I read it, the less I believe it.

EDIT: Screw it. It's already been de-confirmed.
