Basically, the planets would just be like different countries or states, and space itself would just be like a really big planet. It loses any sense of an epic conflict and just feels like it could have taken place on Earth. If you take the setting as space with an Earth (or Earth variation only) and just have some minor space colonies and that's it, it feels more epic and grander, like there's more out there. Like it really is in this empty, black abyss.
Add in planets and fighting MECHS across the galaxy is old hat. Nothing new, nothing special, nothing epic. Take them away, and space is a cold, lonely combat field. Which is cooler.
Simple things like adding in planets can cause rifts of subtlety when it comes to mood, theme, and the like. It'll create a whole different universal feel. With planets, it's all about the organizations; the things the characters take part in. Without them, space is lonely and the only occupants are the few people who occupy it. That setting makes a focus on characters not only easier, but natural.

Space is lonely and a damn cool place to fight, but planets give variety. Fighting in the middle of a blizzard on the artic cap of a planet? What about in a thick tropical forest with trees twice the size of redwoods? Heck, even urban combat or a death-defying high-speed ballet of bullets rushing through a twisting ravine?
And HH, your point stands--space IS lonely and cold and empty. The majority of this story will take place there. But I do also remember some pretty epic moments on planets (or even in the atmosphere) in other mecha anime :P Also, having planets to me means you can break up the monotany of nothing but space and artificial stations.
plus, it's not a galaxy, it's just a big solar system :P
One midterm down, back to studying. >.> Will give more commentary on your guys' suggestions later, but I like what I see! (especially the stickers, Urby. Still awesome.)

I would also like to say that I'm a bit iffy on the names of the planets, so if anyone has suggestions in that area, I'm all ears.
Terra is still the central planet, the "Earth clone" of the series (after all, Terra literally means "Earth"), with the rest being the locations of colonies. Hobbez was the first colony to declare its independence from Terra, then went about bullying or coercing its neighbors to ally with them. This is the start of the Saiban Federation. After acquiring considerable power and influence, the Federation turned its sights on Terra. They invaded, and were eventually able to force a surrender, then went back to acquiring the rest of the colonies, one by one. This continued until the last few free colonies decided to band together for a last defense, forming the Fusegi Alliance. Thus, our story begins...
(If this is a complete rip-off of an existing anime, I'm sorry. It sounds a bit like the plot of some of the Gundam series, but I've never actually seen a single Gundam anime, though I plan to see Gundam Wing and Gundam SEED soon, as I hear that you don't need a lot of knowledge of past series to understand their plots.)

As for planets, well... I'm tossing around ideas for names of the home planet. Of course, I could just use the name "Elysium" and leave it at that... but really, I don't think "Elysium" fits.
And I will be the first to admit that as long as there's a fight on a barren moon, I will be happy. I mean, come on - look at the possibilities! The dust! The rocks! The craters! The occasional meteorite!
And coming back to the subject of ideas, I had an idea for a possible rumour surrounding Edgeworth:
Word on the street... er, I mean spaceway, or whatever the equivilent of "street" would be here... rumour has it that Edgeworth once took out an entire (large) group of Fusegi mechas, single-handedly. Of course, as with all rumours, it's not completely true; they exaggerated how many he faced... not to mention that the rumour completely fails to mention that this fight took place in an asteroid field.
...that idea sounded better in my head. Ah well.

Now Elysium, that's an interesting idea. We could make it the home planet of the Federation. Continues the greek imagery (Tartarus and Elysium are both parts of the Greek underworld (yes it is, yes, Elysium is represented as good in many other things)). Now, to counter this, I'm gonna be a little crazy. I'm gonna suggest we use something Roman. List of epithets involving Jupiter include "Jupiter Lucetius ("of the light")" (blame Wikipedia if I'm wrong). So, how about Luceti for the home planet of Phoenix & co.?
(I use too many parentheses (nested parentheses too (I blame grammar class (it's a good one (better than the ones I had before (then again, there were only two of them (OK, I'll stop now))))))).

@Gerkuman: Actually, I'm sort of not sure on what I want Mareka to do. I was thinking that maybe she'd be the acting captain while Phoenix was gone... I DO know that I want her to be a badass pilot, whether it's of a mech or of the Turnabout. I was thinking that she could be both the pilot and the acting-captain, she just prefers to "captain" from the pilots chair. I do like Yuusaku being a security officer, though instead of Klingon forehead ridges he has donut hair :P
I'm not sure on how the logistics of his Kamen-Mask-ing would work, though. If anything, Mareka's mecha would be registered to the Turnabout and regulations would probably prevent him "taking it" without people knowing who was piloting. I really do like the idea of Space Pirate Zenitora, though, we're definitely using that :D
@Greg: More music ideas are good. I was considering Grossberg being the commander of the ship, but... the idea I have for the Turnabout is it's a smallish, seemingly unimportant spacecraft that still manages to affect the war. Grossberg, the admiral of the Alliance, probably has a flagship. Nick's ship ends up being important, yes, but I think he'd not be on the direct command.
@Urby: Ack! those are great! (And Adrian/Fran sketch is <333) I do think the Assassin design looks a biiiit like a Magatama, though. :P
@Greg #2: Like those planets a bunch. I actually was thinking that P/M/L don't come from a major planet, but a sort of... not backwater by any means, but less important planet or moon. Sort of hard to explain. And like I was saying, I do like the concept of planets for more diversity. I'll probably start contributing my own at some point :D
@HH #2: Actually, I can think of quite a few Mech animes that have a significant portion of the plot taking place on *A* planet if not multiple ones :P
@Kwoffei: Edgey doesn't like asteroid fields :P Not quite his crippling fear of earthquakes he has in the game, but ever since his father's death he's extremely doubtful in his ability to navigate them, and VERY uncomfortable in them. But the idea isn't a bad one by any means...
Also, I really like the "Federation" planet being Elysium. Cool name.

How do we make it so that it's something that Redd could do on his own, but take a long enough time that Phoenix could concievably stop it (but fail once his AI goes haywire due to Chinami's meddling)?

On the rumour: Yeah, I'll admit that I was somewhat doubtful about setting the supposed battle in an asteroid field, but at the time I was thinking, "Now, what's a setting where he could use the environment to his advantage?" And, being hazardous and having plenty of very hard surfaces, the asteroid field came into mind.
Now that I think about it, another possibility would be in the atmosphere of a gas planet, although the fact that the Mitsurugi's design sacrifices speed means that it wouldn't nessecarily be a good idea. Not to mention that who knows what gases could lurk in all those clouds...
On the Kurain's destruction: Well, thinking about how it could be done (and stopped)... one idea I came up with was basically to backtrack a bit, and try to figure out any potential weaknesses in the Kurain's build and whatnot.
Of course, one possibility would be through trickery. I'm just not sure what said trickery would involve.
And, slightly off the topic... I recently remembered that I hapepn to own a web domain that's mostly unused. And when I thought about it, Gyakuten MECHA entered my mind...
Yes, that is the sound of someone going, "Oh! I have a web space! I could assemble a site!" Or something along those lines, anyway.

I appreciate your help immensely, but this seems like a bit difficult to logistically work in--I mean, it's not just one guy sneaking out in the dark of night to rob, it's a guy stealing a gigantic robot from a military carrier spacecraft, doing his errands, and then returning a massive 60-foot-tall-ship to the same military craft... with no-one, let alone the real pilot, any the wiser. That's a pretty large suspension of disbelief :P

Immediately prior to the beginning of the story, the Kurain was caught in an ambush--it escaped albeit damaged, and limped to a nearby asteroid field surrounding a planet in the vicinity to hide and make repairs. This is the incident that makes Capt. Fey & Cmdr. Kaminogi really suspect they've got a spy on board, since no one else knew about their assigned flight route.
Since they're only able to make cursory emergency repairs at the asteroid, they head to a hidden Alliance base located on a mostly Federation-held planet, though it's a bit of a backwater and so the Federation garrison will only have a handful of mech troops and probably a light cruiser... and that's if their outdated scanners even detect the Kurain's presence.
When they arrive at the planet, though, the garrison scrambles surprisingly quickly--like they expected they were coming. Still, their numbers are few, and while the Kurain only has three mecha in battle-ready condition (Nick's Huma, Larry's Rodin and Redd's Jewel (and Mia refuses to let Maya go out in the Galahad even if she does have training)) they're more than a match for the older Federation models.
The Federation troops begin a full-on flank attack--the side that Redd is guarding, while a few others attack Nick and Larry's positions as a diversion. Nick tries to warn Redd... but sees that not only have they not destroyed his "comrade," he's actually turned and is flying with them.
The Kurain tries to go into emergency evasive maneuvers as Nick leaves Larry to handle the rest (which he's capable of doing if he focuses like he is now)... but it's still damaged, and the traitor + friends are quickly catching up. Still, Huma is the fastest craft on the field, and Mia has full confidence that Phoenix will reach them in time.
Phoenix is pretty sure he will, too, though he's getting every last bit of speed he can out of his mecha...
...until the cockpit flickers and goes dark and the thrusters cut out--he's still going because lol, space and inertia, but he's not getting any faster, and now he's not catching up. Phoenix desperately tries a cold restart, finds that there's absolutely no AI presence whatsoever, frantically works a manual override--normally VERY dangerous to do--and tries to catch up.
Even with the snafu, he almost makes it--but not before the Federation troops unleash a barrage that destroys the last remaining engine, leaving the Kurain a drifting derelict with an increasingly unstable power core.
Nick arrives, makes short work of the Federation troops in a rage despite the lack of AI, but Redd's also opened fire on the bridge itself. Redd tries to fight Nick but is clearly no match for him.
Phoenix tries frantically to contact the bridge, but gets only static--until he hears Mia weakly say something (presumably over the ship comm) about evacuation, and escape pods get launched [as does Maya in the Galahad]. Phoenix desperately tells Mia about the AI, he can't quite hear her response through the static, but the last thing he barely makes out is her asking him to take care of Maya. After that, there's nothing--and in about another twenty or so seconds, the power core reaches critical mass and explodes, completely destroying the Kurain.
So? How's that work?

And yes, I know about the disbelief thing. I'm just trying to work out a way to bridge the gap because I like the idea. The way we have it now means No Aiga (Yuu-Chan will eat you alive) or the Kamen Mask. But you're much better at this sort of thing than me and we've got a long time to work it out :F

He later accepted a risky posting on the old Kurain, in exchange for his freedom. It was there he found 'Ayame' and realised it was Chinami. However, since he promised her when they were going out that he would kill himself if he ever lost faith in her (He truly thought she's killed herself), he killed himself while on the bridge of the Kurain. However 'Ayami' had disposed of the note that said the reasons for his death, so people thought it was just a random suicide.

I never said one planet is bad. Tons of MECH planets take place on a show, and that's fine. I'm just not a fan of "look! It's a planet! Look, over there is a colonized planet! Hey! Look at THAT planet that I was born on! Whoo, check out that fine little asteroi- wait, it's a PLANET"

I have been able to make the three slash marks for the Assassin look convincing, but I haven't been able to make an insignia to go with it.
Do send your suggestions over my way, along with any ideas for the other mecha. I lack inspiration.
Also, Godot wants to know where the coffee went.

I imagined CHINAMI to be sort of attatched to Godot, in a way that they can communicate but no one else can hear what CHINAMI is saying (very 'evil voice in your ear' style)

And it'd be like she was there with him all the time, standing by him maybe even touching him (If the visors connected to his brain, she could affect his other senses too). Sorta like a real Hologram (Real to him, AI to everyone else). As an AI she'd definatly look like her 3-5 version in court.

I have a question to ask: you mentioned that so far it'd probably just be the intro. I've gotten the basic design for it down (yes, I'm making the webpage myself - maybe I should fine-tune it just a bit).
Now, the question is this: Would it be okay if I just had the intro/summary ("The year is 4017..."), or should I include the full introduction, including the part from before the title ("So, I’m betting that...")?

Also, I'm going to be sorta slow with this, and I am in no way doing ANY of Arc Two before GS3 gets released here, just because I don't want to spoil people. This is gonna be a longer, slower project.

I didn't want to make anything too complex or large, hence the simplicity (and lack of images). Since I have the original still saved on my computer, I can easily update it when I have the time.
Of course I could have gone to the trouble of making a highly elaborate layout, but when I work quickly, that's not how I roll. ;P

So, since I AM a guy and this is sort of a way to reassert my masculinity after writing cute little romance stories, there will be awesome battles.
A brief summary of any important/semi-important battles/duels (aka not just "AGH IT'S A GUNDAM *BOOM*") to be found in Arc 1...
-Destruction of the Kurain (Phoenix vs. Redd, though that's quick)
-Phoenix's first commanded battle in space! (Phoenix vs. Miles to a draw)
-Phoenix-led Alliance vs Miles-led Federation on the ground (no duel here... there'll be a period of time on a single planet for a few chapters in Arc 1)
-Still on the ground, Phoenix vs Miles duel TECHNICALLY to a draw, though Miles was winning.
Introduction of the crew of the Badger and Franziska. Yay Flan! Aaaand... we're back to space.
Global Mercenaries get hired (series of chapters focusing on just the crews of the Badger / Turnabout interacting/reflecting, we focus on the Federation forces for a while and introduce the Global crew)
-Minor skirmish with the Badger + Global pilots against... space pirates or something. Miles and Fran begin to get disgusted with Engarde's behavior.
-More major skirmish with Federation/Global vs space pirates, Matt about to kill Adrian as collateral damage when he's stopped. (Quick Fran vs Matt)
Introduce Lana and hint at the High Admiral with the post-crash Matt scene.
The main offensive of the arc begins, with Federation forces trying to take a strategic Alliance planet, Admiral von Karma is coming to oversee it himself.
-Minor Skirmish (Fran vs Phoenix, Miles orders her to retreat)
-Big battle (lots of troops) where neither side is really willing to commit to a full scale assault (a bit of Miles vs Phoenix, a bit of Franziska vs Larry)
Enter Psycho Matt and the Assassin
-Pretty short Franziska vs Matt, Round 2
-Miles & Phoenix vs Matt Engarde
Rawr enter von Karma the Elder. STUFF HAPPENS THAT IS SEEKRIT UNLESS YOU REALLY WANNA KNOW IN WHICH CASE I'LL PM IT TO YOU. >.>
-Phoenix vs Admiral von Karma and his Absolute
-Phoenix & Miles vs Admiral von Karma
Technically, it ends with a bit of one-on-one between Miles and Manny VK, but that's really quick. >.>
Ending! Resolution! Foreshadowing Epilogue!
Aaaaand... that's about it. 'Course, there's stuff in between those...
Also, I've "invented" 'Jump' technology as a way to approach light-speed, though still not surpass it. Just for "quicker" movement, though it still takes a while to traverse the system.
ALSO IT GIVES OFF GARYUU WAVE RADIATION LOL

Quick question: Should we make a 'credits' page where we can cite who contributed what? Thought maybe it might be neat.
Question 2: Will GS4 characters pop up as 'easter egg' appearances? Like "oh, it's a space orphanage, save the little kids from the evil that is Matt!" and it turns out to be Odoroki and co or something?
