No, it was a reference to the in-name-only sequel to C.H.U.D, C.H.U.D II: Budd The C.H.U.D., which most people aren't aware of (and thank goodness for that.)
While the original C.H.U.D. was your standard "pollution-creates-monsters" trope, Budd The Chud is a horror-comedy (a really, REALLY bad horror-comedy) that has abosolutely nothing to do with the original film.

Last week my brother and I were talking, and we came to the conclusion that the Subspace Emissary is Gant. Also, this makes it impossible to win SSE mode with anyone except Phoenix (who is totally playable, and a Capt. Falcon clone).

That's be sweet! Even if an Assist is clearly not plausible, I would imagine something like Gant appearing and staring into your opponents souls and make them immobile for you to do anything you want!
