We all know that digital media allows for more content and at a crisper resolution, but what are your thoughts about the extra baggage that came with it? Such as FBI warnings you can no longer fast forward through, and unresponsive Menus.

The warnings never bothered me (I think depending on the player, you can actually fast forward through them as well, I know I have on a few discs). I never really had unresponsive menus, either. I love my DVDs...doubt I'll ever buy a VHS movie ever again, only blank tapes to tape a show or something, since I don't have a TiVo or DVR.

I'm still kinda mad over this new format war too, I got a pretty good DVD collection, and don't wanna rebuy'em just to get a HD picture. It seems like one is actually winning over the other, so we'll see what becomes the dominate medium.

I'm a VHS girl. DVDs are very convenient, yes, and I own quite a few. But I grew up with tapes, and it seems quite easier for me to maneuver a tape player. Just insert, play, done. With DVDs, I have to wait for it to warm up...load the disk...wait for the disk to load...wait for the menu to come up..pick my option..It's crazy.

As a guy who buys about 250 blanks videos evey year for the last 5 years and longer, I still find that I love using VHS even if they are considered out of date. However, I also spends hundreds of dollars on DVDs and DVD collections each year also. I find that it really depends on each person needs.

If your looking for a super clear pictures or usually willing to wait for ad-freeTV or movies with extras material, DVDs work for you. Plus, some shows can't be found on TV anymore forcing you to buy DVDs. Of course, this is going to cost you a little more.

However, if you don't care highly about a drop quality and ads and want that show/movie now, VHS is your best choice. But, VHS are becoming harder and harder to find to the fact that most people find them obslete. So, grab them while you can.

That's my rule. :godot:

VHS is outdated as hell. Enjoy them while you can, I suppose, since they'll de-magnetize in a while and become nothing but snow.

They were great when that's all there was, but for god's sake there's no reason to not use dvds these days.

DVD wins over VHS. No contest. Although, I really wouldn't care if DVDs never came into existence. I would just continue using VHS tapes. I buy DVDs because they're more practical and I can't be bothered to scour the face of the earth for a VHS tape of anything.

Regarding definition, sound, etc. I don't really care about that stuff. I'm just happy that I can watch the damn things.

DVD's, even though I love to tape my shows from time to time on VHS since I can't do that on DVD's atm. The FBI warning was never a problem and who really pays attention to that anyway?

I prefer DVD's for buying movies (mostly because they're the only things you can get now), but for recording, VHS is my favorite. Most dvd's are only able to hold recorded information for about 2-4 years, where as VHSs can hold their content for much longer

DVDs, definitely. I can't imagine myself going back to VHS, I like having my movies and tv shows on a slightly more permanent media.

The only thing I hate about DVDs are the ones that put previews at the beginning of the disc and don't let you skip them.

DVDs. Because if you're like me and are very careful with your DVDs, they'll actually last a LOT longer than 2-4 years. :P

Scene selection, better sound, widescreen/fullscreen options, et cetera.

DVD's because of all the 'bonus features' available, as well as the fact that I can watch DVD's on my computer, whilst someones using the DVD player in the living room.

Also I don't have to fast forward/rewind to get to the part I want to watch on a DVD, whereas you have to if you are using videotapes. :redd:

As for DVD menus, I don't really mind them too much.

Another thing I hate about dvds is the idiots who drop them and scratch them all up so sometimes if I rent one it's nearly unplayable. Is it that hard to not get crap all over a disc? Other people want to watch them sometime, you know! >:[

But still dvds are better.

DVDs for use and recording.

Because I don't choose the bulky walkmen over the MP3 player that can hold about a hundred songs.

Why anyone thinks that VHS are better that DVD is beyond me... I mean, VHS aren't even the best tape format out there...
DVDs have far, FAR better picture quality, better sound quality (including surround), bonus features and scenes selection. Oh, and VHS takes so much space...
As for recording, I just use a hybrid DVR/DVD burner, so I record the shows on the hard-drive and, if I feel the need, I copy them on DVD.

Actually, for those complaining about the DVD's menus, HD DVD has a great menu system (you don't even need to go trought the menu to start the movie). But its all past anyway, Blu-Ray won the format war (like one month after I got my HD-DVD player...).

I like VHS because I love older technology. It's what I was raised with, so I appreciate the work they did for me back in the day and there's just something about the heft of a VHS tape that makes me smile. It's a lot easier to ruin a DVD than it is to ruin a VHS tape, and while I know that the VHS tape will eventually demagnetize, and while I know that the quality isn't as good, and that I can't just immediately hop to the scene I want to see... I still love them. And without them, I couldn't tape the shows I miss when I'm at work or library or out on an errand. And I like the clicking sounds they make when you stick them in the VCR.

The only thing I really appreciate about DVDs is the fact that having a season collection of episodes for something no longer means you have to devote an entire video shelf to each season.

Then again, I'm the girl who misses her old Commodore computer and the accompanying hand-sized floppy disks, her Atari, audio cassette tapes, non-HDTV non-flatscreen TV sets, walkmans, non-earbud headphones, and spinach-screen Game Boys as big as a book. And vinyl records.

They still make vinyl records.

Everything else...you know, remembering stuff as "quaint" is fine but there's really no reason to ever actually have "old" technology, save for maybe a land line corded phone with no required power outlet.

What other tape formats are there? Surely, no one uses Betamax tapes any more?

I think VHS was the tape format that left the most lasting impression.

They still make vinyl records and proper headphones, yes. But that doesn't mean they're easy/inexpensive for me to find/get ahold of.

VHS won over Beta Max because of Porno.

Vinyl is still used by many DJs (especially in Hip-Hop), to mix, blend, etc. tracks.

Betamax was superior to the VHS, no contest. If you are going to use tapes, might as well be Betamax.

Oh, and you never herd D-VHS, right? Those baby could hold 50GB of data, including playing and recording HD video.

I think that VHS are good for recording purposes.

I also remember a long time ago that Laser Disc also made their movie discs quite huge aronud the 1990's. (If im correct...)

Personally, I don't have much of a preference. As long as it's something I want to watch, the fact that it's a DVD or a VHS doesn't matter much. I find that as technology moves along at a (seemingly) faster and faster rate, sometimes it really doesn't matter if the quality of the sound/picture is top-notch. Mainly because you need a whole bunch of upgrades to actually see the new quality in effect-something that is a bit too expensive for most people. So I just settle with having something that I can watch, regardless of the format.
(Besides, I personally believe that years from now there'll be some new form of the TV entertainment-something with even better sound and picture quality. There's always going to be upgrades. As long as it never stops getting better, I don't see a reason to get the "next best thing" if it's going to be outdated in 10-20 years. It's most likely not worth the cost for the time period.)

I prefer DVD for reasons listed above but also one more critical point: rewinding. So annoying when you wanted to watch something but the last person who watched it was inconsiderate and didn't rewind. It was even worse if you had a crappy ancient player that didn't rewind and had to buy a rewinder separately. >_<
