There really is no easy way to learn it. To get a full grasp on the language, you really need to want to learn it besides watching anime and playing video games since you really need to understand the cultural aspects of it.

I would highly recommend taking it at a school that teaches it so you have a structured path from learning the basics to the advanced stuff. Back in my college days, my school didn't offer it so I tried to teach myself. I didn't get very far and lost interest because I didn't really have a set path in learning it.

I really don't have the time or interest anymore to learn the language since I'm working, but who knows, maybe I'll pick it up again.

First off, I'll say that you shouldn't want to learn Japanese just to use it for Japanese video games. It's a fairly poor reason for such a huge commitment, and if you're not even going to use it outside of video games or manga, there really isn't much point in learning it.

Learning Japanese, even on a basic level, can be a fairly hard undertaking. Getting a fluent source to help you with the material is good idea, though for some that means hiring a tutor. If you're going to a school that has a Japanese language course, I'd suggest taking that.

Japanese is not easy to become fluent in. Especially if you're doing it by yourself, instead of in a school program.

I'm enrolled in my 3rd year of Japanese in high school, and I have a very small vocabulary, especially when it comes to kanji (I know about 200 of the 2000 you need to know to be able to read a newspaper). Basically, to become fluent in Japanese takes many, many years and a lot of practice.

I have no idea how long it'd take to become fluent, or almost fluent in Japanese. I can phrase out quite a few sentences, but can only get so far. I could probably survive in Japan, but I couldn't get much of anywhere.

So basically, if you plan to study Japanese seriously it's best to go to school for it. Also, like Orca said, your reason for learning Japanese is a bit iffy. It'd be better to have a higher goal than to just be able to play video games.

Also, alongside what everyone else has said, taking some time to be in Japan will also help greatly, probably more so than just taking a class. Immersing yourself in the culture and hearing the language all the time is the best way. It forces you to adapt, unless you spend a lot of time getting every single everything translated by a fluent friend.

Of course, that's not exactly an option open to most people.

If you just want to learn Japanese to understand imported titles and anime/manga maybe you shouldn't undertake such a large goal, after all there's always fan translations and subs/dubs you know...

I'm in my second year of Japanese at High School now, its a very interesting language and has a lot of culture behind it, its also rather difficult, yet my teacher's taking me to Japan along with 30 other students in October, I'll enjoy it very much.

Again I have to agree with everyone else: Learning Japanese just for the sake of gaming/anime/etc. is not worth it by any means. While it's definitely not the hardest language out there to learn, a lot of time and effort still needs to be put forth to fully grasp it in the long run.

That said though, going out and getting a few books and programs definitely is a good place to start (Some of my materials are just random lessons pulled off the internet). The best thing I've found - besides actually learning from a native speaker or in a classroom setting - involves following textbooks and heck, even the preparatory study guides for things like the JLPT.

Still, in the long run is finding a native speaker. Not only can they help you with the syntax of things but it'll also help give you insight into the cultural background of the language. Will Powers

I'm going to assume you're half-joking with "I want to learn Japanese for video games."

As most of the posters before have said, the best way to learn the language is to take a course in it. I don't believe there's an easy way to learn Japanese, or any language for that matter, unless you are in Japan while learning Japanese.

In my own case, I'm in first year of it, and they're barely letting us look at kanji. Know your "kana"s and words :0

There's this cool site online that has Japanese lessons on it. I'll have to give you the link to it when I get home, but it's good as an introduction ^_^ I should try to do that thing again, I'll have the time once I've done my AS exams.

I was taking a GCSE Japanese course. It was mainly due to my concentration problems that I failed, but I must warn you that it is very hard. It's not something that you can learn quickly. It will take a good couple of years to even learn the basics and the grammar structure.

Konnichi wa. Watashi wa Naruhodou desu. Hajimemashite.

My Japanese sucks <__<. If you want to learn Japanese, you should try watching DVDs, putting educational MP3s on your iPod, printing out Hiragana flash cards, taking a course, and carrying around a dictionary.

Doozo yoroshiku *bow*.

I only learned from an internet course, so I suck like heck Nick.

To be fair, I started trying to teach myself Japanese in 7th grade because I wanted to read Sailor Moon comics. Edgy I took Japanese through high school, but it wasn't until I got to college and was still interested in learning that I really considered making it my career.

Even if your reasons for starting something can be iffy, you can still find a passion for it along the way.

That said I would definately suggest taking a class of some sort. I didn't really learn anything with my original self study (except for memorizing the kana). Once you've learned the basics it's much easier to start watching anime and playing games to pick up extra stuff.

I don't really recommend self-teaching, as any language takes years to learn and master and without at least some help from a fluent or native speaker chances are you'll miss the subtleties. But there are a few resources I can suggest for anyone honestly interested in the attempt.
