Federal Jury pools are between 40 and 60.

This was 45.

Jury selection is, at best, a guessing game. I challenged 17 jurors right off the bat. I picked the 8 I wanted pretty fast.

When I was in the high school, once our headmaster was having a general students speech.

Head master: You have to work hard, everyone, and you well get revenge in the future!

Students: *burst into laugh*

(I believe he wanted to say something like "reward", but...XD)

Do people usually tend to be excited about being there, especially if they can get out of work, or do they find it tedious? I'm sure it depends on the person, but I wonder if one is more common of a reaction than the other. I would think most people would find it to be interesting, but both of my parents had been annoyed. But then again, my mother disliked it because she was pregnant at the time, and my father had been called for jury duty twice, only to get out of it because he was a physician.

Anyway, to go slightly on topic, this reminds me (honestly, just because of the word 'federal') of my Crim teacher back in HS, when the students had done particularly bad on a quiz (a matching quiz, I believe).

:javado: I'm going to fail the next person who can't grasp the fact that Federal Judges are nominated by the president. The 5th amendment isn't trusted with that sort of responsibility. Neither are any other amendments. In fact, unless the question begins with 'which amendment...', don't chose an amendment as an answer.

My HS didn't exactly have very smart students. When I was taking AP History, the General History students in one class infamously got yelled at by the teacher for puting 'slavery' as the answer to something like 'what was the most prominent issue in the black community in the 1920s?'.

Although I wasn't there, his speech was quoted for weeks afterward.

:odoroki: THERE WAS NO SLAVERY! NO SLAVERY! NO! SLAVERY!

I hope it was half as awesome as the image I have in my mind of it.

Yes. Most people like to be called to a Federal Jury. It's fancier and more flexible. Plus we recruit more educated people.

Federal Judges are suggested by Congressman and Senators, forced through the Senate confirmation committee and then rubber stamped by the President.

The more you know.

*claps* Finally, a topic where I can express the insanity of my teachers! *evil smile*

First of all, I'm a clarinetist in our band. I can't remember what this was for, but we were preparing music for a concert, and we were missing our crash symbols. (I think that's what they're called... I'm not a percussionist.)
Mr. T (our sub for the day): Okay, so when you need to crash the cymbals, either hit something or just say "Crash!" really loud!
Cymbalist: Okay.
*we all start playing a beautiful tune*
Cymbalist: *in a boring voice* Crash.

... Yeah, it was funnier when it actually happened.

Speaking of Mr. T, he was also helping us prepare for concert contest last week. One of the low brass instruments played really... blatty.
Mr. T: Boys, do you remember when you were younger and you'd put your hand under your armpit to make that *pfft* sound. That's what you sounded like. *pfft pfft pfft *
For whatever reason, I laughed at that.

Finally, our science teacher. She's literally insane. Every time somebody asks a question, she goes to something totally different and usually doesn't even let them finish their question. Then she assigns us book work and pretty much teaches something totally different the next day. Well, one day, she decided to tell us the definition of a certain word.
Mrs. M: Do you know what "insanity" means?
The whole class: *slowly looks at each other*

I'll bring up more when I stop suppressing memories of last year.
Interesting signature? Uh... Look, a diversion! *flees*

My teacher brought a cardboard cut-out of Orlando Bloom to school with her and placed it into our classroom. When I asked her where she had gotten it, she said,
"My son bought it for me to put in my bedroom." After realizing the implications of her words, she turned bright red.

English Teacher (during assembly): If you do well, you'll end up as a teacher who wears an army suit, and has an Houdi TTT.

Haha. Nice to know that kind of info. A HS Criminology class, especially the one I was in, wouldn't go into nearly that much information about the process. I might be remembering things wrong, but I believe it was simplified to us that Federal Judges are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

That's how it went. Little elaboration about law processes, and a lot of elaboration on how so-and-so got murdered. Basicially, screw the video about plea bargaining, and put in that video about Jeffery Dahmer.

(For some reason, I remember being mad that the Leopold and Loeb trial was never dicussed. Heck, Clarence Darrow was probably mentioned only once.)

For some reason, I'm still convinced you'll kick his ass in court. He's immensely handicapped in this case, what with the judge loathing and despising hippies (and arsonists, I assume), the prosecution loathing and despising arsonist hippies, and five of his "allies" doing more harm than good to his case. Oh, and a juror with the hots for the prosecution.

Even so, I wouldn't get overconfident. :P

Also, :garyuu: is First Assistant U.S. Attorney Curtis Fuller, and sometimes me.

Funny how the most interesting part of a crime story is some guy talking about the Death Penalty for TWELVE HOURS. (But yes, that was definietly the high point. This is Darrow we're talking about).

Ha, your conversation with LaSage reminds me of my father always insisting that doctors (him being one) and lawyers are known as the most egotistical people on the planet. So, my question is; are experienced lawyers really as egotistical as they're assumed to be? I actually think a good ego is healthy, but that could be because my entire family is like one huge mega-ego. He could also be trying to make you nervous, I suppose.

Good luck on the trial, anyway. 'Reach for the dozen', maybe?

Most high profile Prosecutors and Defense Attorneys have healthy egos. But, the egos are backed by great skills. Out of court, lawyers are relatively normal.

Here I was hoping that LaSage had his own theme song.

No one's slick as LaSage,
no one's quick as LaSage,
no one's neck is as incredibly thick as LaSage's!
For there's no man in town half as manly,
perfect, a pure paragon,
You can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley,
and they'll tell you whose team they prefer to be on!

Okay, I'll stop there.

Plus Mike doesn't want to risk his client saying something stupid and ruining the case right off the bat.

None of the hippie defendants are listening to their hippie Defense Attorneys.

Ha, I provided a lot of the Qs.

Seeing as having someone involved in law in a forum of members that are interested enough in law to play games about it (well, okay, very loosely based off of it) is like starting a fire in a roomful of moths, Tails actually probably should have his own thread. Or, if there isn't one already, a RL law thread.

Okay, one day I was late for class (like 2 minutes late...) and students who are late will be shut out of the classroom for 30 minutes. My one class was in a portable and it was pouring rain outside >_>. Anyways...

Sarah (Me): *huff huff* I'm late!!* *tries to open door* It's locked...

*Outside for 30 minutes*

Teacher: *opens door* "Sarah, are you ready to come in yet?"

Me: "N-"

*Teacher slams door immediately*

And then I wait outside until class is over (and hour and 30 minutes...in the rain.) Seriously. I had a cold after that, too. :P
