So, yeah. My DS took a plunge from the top of a bunk bed today, and while it still works, the hinge between the top and bottom broke in a part, and one good jolt could completely split it in half.

Unfortunately, my warranty expired last November, and I'm mostly broke.

What's more, I doubt my parents would even let me buy a new one. They're very picky about how I spend my money.

Of course they have no problems with buying a $3500 HDTV on the spot like they did last night. Dr. Grey

Wait, you parents get uptight on how you spend your OWN money?

I'm already moved out and my parents are still stingy on how I spend my money. Sadshoe

Hope you can find a way to repair/replace your DS soon.

Eh, that screen seperation happened to my second DS (DS Lite). Make sure the wires aren't pulled too much that connect the DS screens.

Same thing happened to my second DS last summer, and it is still fine (I tripped and it was in my pocket D:) other then the hinge is broken so I could snap it easily, but just be careful and it will work for quite a while.

It would be god forbid, if it weren't for the fact that they're pretty hypocritical themselves by making such expensive impulse buys.

a) They have more money than you do.
b) They're your parents.
c) They're your parents.
d) "Do as I say, not as I do" does have weight, as silly as it may be.
e) They're your parents.

Suck it up or move out.

If she didn't want her kid to spend money, then perhaps she shouldn't be letting her kid get money. Otherwise, it's the kids money and if they want to buy something they can afford, parents should let it be.

Still, its a bit unresonable isn't it? They can't control you forever and they shouldn't say, "You CANT buy this" They should just ask you if youre sure you want it and if it's really worth the money right?

It isn't unreasonable at all. Most parents wont allow their child to purchase something, even with their own money, as a way to illustrate What is and is not wise to spend money on. As far as being hypocrites... There is no such thing as long as they pay the bills and understand what can be afforded.

2 things
1. He can't move out, he's 15!!!
2. Parents should set a good example, and not go buy a new TV and say "no new DS" if he pays with his own money!

When you're a kid you don't have money.

True, even what is considered "yours" can't truly be called thus as long as guardians are paying for your very life to keep going.

Mom/dad: 'Here son! Have an allowance!'

kid: thanks mom/dad!

parent: oh and btw, you cant buy anything with it.

kid: why?

parent:because its not really your money. we just want you to think you can spend it on whatever you want, but really its just so we can tell you what to spend it on.

kid: so i cant get a new ds that would make me happy because my old one broke?

parent: of course you cant! god forbid we waste money on frivilious things! *calls to another room* Honey? how is the delivery on our $3500 TV coming?

kid: why did you get one??? your old tv works fine!

parent: because im older. duh.

doesnt make much sense does it?

and for a quick fix, try to tape it together or something...

Same thing hapened to my DS- I superglued it back together. Not that I did a good job of it- the R button is hard to push now. I had to do so because I chose not to buy the official DS Lite being sold here (China) and instead chose to buy a Japanese DS Lite (because from what other people have said on local forums the Chinese DS is locked to only Chinese DS cards (but no lock on what goes into the GBA slot- go figure). I couldn't live with that because I was awaiting the release of the Phoenix Wright games.

On the money issue-in my case my family celebrates Chinese new year, which means that I get money from relatives, so it isn't exactly my parents' money. I don't go crazy spending it all on things that I don't need, though- I try to minimize my spending as much as I can since Chinese New Year comes around only once a year, after all. That means that when I get stuff I try to make it last as long as I can- the exception being cellphones. That's because there's a cellphone flea market (as close as I can describe it- it's in an actual building though, and more closely resembles a mall full of very small stores) and I generally sell my old phone and buy another secondhand one with that money.

(gah- that reads a lot like a rant- I apologize)

It's with a heavy heart that I bump this topic.

A bit over a month ago I got an Onyx DS lite. And today, a bit of screen cleaning gone wrong has fried a good chunk of the touch screen. It's still visible/working, but it's all dark and blotchy and sort of 'shimmers' if you tilt it to the side. Very distracting. My guess is the water fried part of the backlight.

I doubt that it's going to fix itself, so now I've a choice between the DS described in the first post and this one.

God, I feel so stupid now. D:

All I can say to this is, Lmfao.

You could try selling them both and buying a new one you'd have to be EXTRA CAREFUL with.

I always just wipe away the dust and dirt and the like with a cloth or a part of my shirt. The only time I use liquids to clean my stuff is when there's a stain or the like on it.

The thing is I'd done this before and nothing ever happened. I use my shirt if it's like dust or stuff but the screen was smudged and using my shirt/a dry rag would've just made it worse.

I know what it feels like to have your DS to just fall and die.

I once had a black DS lite.

It fell into a cereal bowl.

Then I went out and bought a standard, bulky, scratched up, used DS...
