They don't look any different- unless you mean the ones that appear on Kirihito. Although, as far as I can tell those are only different in color (maybe someone can post a comparison?)- they're black/gray as opposed to the normal red ones. I think it's supposed to mean that they can't be broken.

Haven't got a clue- but no Magatama option appears after you see his Psyche-locks. Maybe he's really motivated to stay silent on whatever brought up the Psyche-locks (not really sure what it was because I don't understand that much Japanese but I'm currently playing through a Chinese version of GS4 and I'll see what it was when I get to case 4 again)?

So I'm playing day three, trial, and I realize...I think I've been playing for the last hour or so without presenting a single piece of evidence. I've got three pages of notes of just dialogue! I think it's about time I got to object or Minuku or something.

I'm gonna try to beat it tonight, bbl~

I read what is up on the description page, and the Mason system...
I was lead to the conclusion that it was Time Travel, but from the way I am interpreting it, it is really a "game" made by Phoenix for the player. This would explain why something would need to be done in the Future to affect the Past-he, uh, "designed" it that way. It's one of the most interesting 4th wall breaks-nay, shattering, I've seen. I must await with baited breathe of what the rest of the case intails....

Also, sounds like there are, like, a bagillion new sprites to rip in this case. Well, kinda ruined my whole intellegent sounding thing I had going, eh?

From I understand it, having finished the game, the Mason System doesn't actually break the fourth wall at all. At least, not in the way I thought.

Phoenix does say "you all" throughout the case, and I think you're meant to assume he's talking to you, the player. But he's not - he's talking to the jury. Maybe you can infer that the player is a member of the jury, sure. But it actually makes a lot more sense than I originally thought.

The Mason System is an interactive court record Phoenix created for the Jury to view. He knew he couldn't beat Kirihito in court. He simply couldn't get the decisive evidence he would have needed in the "all or nothing" court system he was used to. With the Jury, he didn't need that decisive evidence. But he did need them to see things they wouldn't normally be able to see.

So he created the Mason System, filling it with the recording of his trial against Kyouya 7 years ago, his encounters over the years, and most importantly, present day video footage he gained through the video camera in his :O button. He told and showed the jury everything that he had learned, so that they would be able to know the truth. Even though he wasn't allowed to present it in court, they SAW the evidence that proved Makoto innocent, through him.

After that, all he needed was for Odoroki to break down Kirihito in court, revealing his true nature to give proof to his account.

I'm not sure if everything in the Mason System was meant to be an accurate account. It's a collection of scenes Phoenix pieced together in a computer program, after all. He had no problem lying to Odoroki in the first case in order to get Kirihito. So it may be that the records in the Mason System are strange and out of order because of Phoenix's state of mind when he created them. It's the fruit of his labor of seven years but that doesn't mean it's the truth.

In fact, it's a lot like cheating entirely!

So it's not time travel. It's not the matrix, it's not Scissors 61. It's a computer simulation created by Phoenix to give a Jury reasonable doubt.

Sounds vaguely clever. Personally, I hope that they won't set up every trial like this from now on; perhaps half of all defendants choose to have a judge trial and half a jury trial, leaving us with 2 or 3 judge trials and 1 or 2 jury trials in future GS games.

Of course, jury trials won't be too crazy if their preformed without the mason system's involvement. The GS world's demand on unanimous consent of the jurors (combined with the 3-day limit that will never exist in, say, America) leaves me a bit worried regardless. Hmmm... Hobohodo

I think the Jury system should be a one time thing.

As much as I think it's a clever concept in this specific case, it kind of takes the fun out of it as well. There is no Final Evidence Present. There's no instant feeling of win. By the time the jury steps in, you...basically get to pick whether or not you want to win the case. In context it's kind of cool but at the same time it puts GS further into the realm of "interactive novel" than "game."

You'd have to be an idiot not to make it through the final cross. Then you just watch everyone play the story through for another 20 minutes and tada, you've won.

And even if you don't get to make the choice yourself, how would they handle a jury otherwise? Could you finish presenting your case, only to go to the jury and be screwed with a guilty verdict? How far back would they make you go? Waiting for a jury to return a verdict wouldn't be nearly as gratifying as the Judge's gavel coming down every time, giving you an instant result.

So I liked it in this case, but I hope they don't do it again.

Unless...I guess they could have a jury meter that measured how convinced the jurors are...? XD;;;;

Eh... I guess that's a decent point.

Maybe by GS7 the Judge'll finally die and all trials will be presided by the Judgebot 3000, a superintelligent cyborg with gavels for hands. Presenting too many logical falicies causes his head to explode, losing the case.

Ok...

Granted, I kinda cheated and looked at the unfinished case write-up, but I'm sort of confused:

Kagerou, in the first case, seemed pretty...well, ruthless. Going far enough to cheat with a conwoman to discredit Phoenix, then assaulting her when things don't go as planned.

However, from the Mason system flashback at Borscht, he and Phoenix almost seem level. He apologizes for involving him in the case, writes out a confession to clear Baran, asks about Minuki, and from the description, the card game was meant to be friendly enough.

So...what's the deal. I'm confused about how things really went down in that game in case 4-1...
