Gregory wrote down his client's statement. "I see...That's terrible. Did anyone prepare any of Holly's food besides you? I had noticed that her bowl had artichokes in it, which is generally not on the menu."

Edgeworth shook his head. "No, I haven't seen her at all since I arrived. I'm sure I'd have heard if something had happened to her, but I can't help but wonder where she is."

"There, that's it." Gregory turned to Julia. "Evidence that someone else besides our client touched the soup. I have to ask, was it you who prepared the soup for her last time when the review was made?"

Edgeworth nodded his head. "It seems probable," he said as they walked to his car. "Such things do help her quest for a perfect case." Edgeworth opened the door to his car and got into the driver's seat. As he put on his seatbelt, he said, "Do wipe your feet, Gumshoe."

"Yes, sir." Gumshoe slid his feet on the ground, so get any dirt off. Mess up Edgeworth's car, get your pay cut. He got in, and looked around a bit. "Wow, I've never seen the interior. Nice car, pal."

"I'm surprised at that, detective," Edgeworth said. "Ah yes, that's right, you didn't investigate the prosecution office parking lot after Detective Goodman's murder." Edgeworth turned the key in the ignition, and there was a quiet purr as the engine started up. "It took some clever wording to get this car back from the police. I had to convince them that the vehicle itself was not evidence. Technicalities drive the legal system. Remember that, Gumshoe."

Edgeworth drove out of the parking lot, and headed in the direction of the police station. "Detective, have you found any new information since we last spoke?"

"...Hmm... What do you think, Greg?" she said, pondering over the facts. They knew that there were people aside from Marques and Holly in the restaurant at the time of the murder; Boris Man Fonne, Mary Liquand, and Art I. Choke. If Boris was in the kitchen, that would only leave Mary and Art outside. And Mary, delivering the soup, might have done something to it. But, how would she get a hold of artichokes if the artichoke jar was with Art, who could have been by that cart with the dirty plates in it. But then there was the theory of Boris spiking the soup himself and serving it out, or the impossible theory of him bringing the soup himself when he barely knew Holly. Murder for a reason, or murder for resto reputation?

"Distractions, Julia." Gregory cautioned. "We can't try to solve the crime quite yet. Right now, our focus must be on proving our client's innocence. The trial is soon, and we will not help anyone trying to get a guilty verdict when our client is still in danger. We don't know the other people as well as we think we do. There's always a potential for murder that we haven't found yet. We've barely talked to any of the suspects."

Franziska was waiting for Edgeworth as soon as he arrived. She knew Scruffy would be with him.

"Scruffy!" She barely acknowledged Edgeworth, wrath in her eyes as her whip arced. "You had yet to give me the evidence report! I had to come back here to get it, which took up valuable time to investigate and prepare my case! You'd best have a good excuse for this!"

Franziska's whip seemed to relent for a second. But then it immediately cracked across his chest, cutting a small tear in his shirt.

"It didn't strike you to use your cell phone? Detective, you disappeared from where I last saw you, and you didn't bother to relay to me where you were? That is your responsibility!" Franziska immediately turned to Edgeworth, and her personality shifted.

"Miles Edgeworth. It seems we are working together to prosecute this case. Have you discovered anything not listed in this report?"

"If you value your money so much, Detective, perhaps you should apply yourself more diligently. If you notice, your salary is only garnished when you create such catastrophe. Though I doubt it, perhaps you will give me cause to smile. Have you discovered any new clues not in the evidence report, or, perhaps, found a new witness?"

Franziska cracked her whip in her hand, just to remind the Detective of what was at stake.

He glanced at the whip, then looked Franziska in the face. "Well, if you could let me run to the evidence room real quick, I could give you a clue. There was some suspicion that the bowls were switched on the night of the crime. If I'm not mistaken, if this is true, the bowl recovered at the crime scene should have someone else's prints on it."

Franziska toyed with the whip in her hands for a moment.

"Has such an analysis already been ordered, and you are merely getting the results, or is it that this was not considered, and you are yet now performing it?"

"Restaurant bowls are typically made out of ceramic materials, like porcelain. Those materials tend to hold fingerprints well. So, you followed my orders and ran a fingerprint test so that, if such a theory were to come up, you would be ready to approve or discount it?"

Franziska flashed a small smile.

"Then let us waste no time discussing that further, Scruffy. Is there anything else you'd care to report?" Franziska's grip relaxed a little on the whip, but her eyes still stared daggers into the Detective.

"A pleasure to see you, Franziska," Edgeworth said as he got out of the car, "as always." He suppressed a laugh at her whipping Gumshoe. "I got Gumshoe to take the victim's notebook down to forensics for analysis. It might help, but I'm not sure - the defence attorney had gotten to it before I could. He was doing a professional job of analysing it, but there's always room for corruption."

Remembering his earlier conversation, Edgeworth added, " I also had a few choice words with the defendent. He seems to have been unaware that his waitress was the victim's step sister. In that regard, the whole affair seems too unlikely to have happened in that regard. it would be a good idea to do some further investigation into the waitress and the victim. I'm certain the defence attorney will pounce on that connection at some point, and we should be ready when they do."

"No sir, there isn't much.... Oh! I had a bowl of soup earlier, but it had artichokes in it. The soup I ordered doesn't usually have artichokes as part of the recipe. If I remember right, the victim's bowl was found with traces of artichokes, too."

Franziska's slight joviality immediately turned to a scowl, as she brought her whip to bear

"The initial autopsy report stated the victim was poisoned! Why, then, wasn't toxicology already run for every component in the soup dish?"

Ka-crack, ka-crack, ka-crack

Three smacks across the chest this time. The first for not mentioning these foreign artichokes earlier. The second for not testing the individual components of the soup for higher concentrations of poison, and third for eating a bowl of soup when he already had gone to the sandwich chain for lunch.

"Detective Dick Gumshoe! If you keep up this poor performance, not only will your salary be garnished, but you'll be so covered in whip marks you'll need to purchase bandages and a new shirt. And such financial hardship should motivate you!"

"Ye... yes sir." He looked down at his shirt. He was bleeding a bit. "But, Ms. von Karma, we are ahead of you. We have already had the bowl tested for poison! It was potassium cyanide, from what I remember."

"You tested the bowl, and found potassium cynaide. Good. However, that only proves the cause of death. There are other things to determine with toxicology, Detective. Why didn't you run those?"

Hmph, never have I seen a man scuttle so. Franziska disdainfully grimaced. She turned to Edgeworth.

Edgeworth crossed his arms, and tapped his index finger against his elbow. "One could hope for a better case, Franziska. Certainly, the defendant had the motive and the opportunity. The victim gave a bad review of his chicken soup, which he seems to be very proud of. He was also there on the night of the murder, and he made the very chicken soup that was found at the victim's table. That does raise the obvious question of why he would make it, but he seemed to believe that the result lay in the crafting rather than the recipe. We could potentially get him to testify to that effect, if we plan ahead. Anyway, as you just heard, Gumshoe has done the tests on the bowl and found traces of potassium cyanide. As you rightly pointed out, that doesn't tell the full story, and I have reason to believe that our defence attorney will pounce on that. They tend to pounce on the tiniest weakness, after all. I'm also curious as to that notebook I sent in for testing. Call it a gut instinct, if you must, but I believe that it could complicate matters."

Edgeworth shrugged his shoulders. "In short, however, the basic case is solid, and any holes could be plugged in court if necessary. I quite understand that you want to sort those issues out here and now, though, so let's figure out how to best complete this investigation."
