Miles pulled a quilt from the back closet and one of the pillows from his bed. He had four pillows on it, so he could spare another. With all the flourish of Martha Stewart setting up a sleep-over, he whipped up a nice little sleeping spot on the couch for Amy. "There we go...Good?"

Maya looked down. "........Nick..." She looked back up at him. "You know when you say that...whatever it is usually does come back to hurt one of our cases!!! You're going to jinx us.." Her eyes shifted left and right like she was looking for some invisable jinx. "...Humph...well, we've still gotta find 'em! We need those files for that case..."

Miles couldn't help but smile as he climbed into his own bed, Pesu curling into a large furry ball beside him. He had found his sister today...and a whole new world of possibilities were open to him. As he closed his eyes, and let sleep take hold, he murmured "Miles Edgeworth chooses life".

Amy had basically passed out asleep, she was exhausted from the Night's events. After a bit of sleeping she started to mumble a bit in her sleep. It was akward, she was dreaming about the fight. Small instances of her whispered "no" and grunts of pain seemed to plauge her night...for the next hour. After that it just stopped and she went back to sleeping regularly. She was use to nightmares...it happened often, maybe too often for her liking...or for that matter anyone esles.
(Might as well just skip to the morning now?.....I think. Or let Phoenix and Maya's night play out?)

Phoenix's Apartment was a true bachelor pad, with just a hint that the young Medium had slept there. Nick never did take the quilt off the couch where Maya usually slept back in those days.
The two gathered at the kitchens breakfast bar and started going over what was stolen from the office, and just what they were dealing with.
"I think..." Nick flipped over a patty as it sizzeled on the pan. "We're dealing wtih someone with at least a good deal of knowledge of our offices layout...It didn't look like it was ransacked, almost as if they knew EXACTLY where to find those files..."
He stopped to nibble on the end of a pickle chip. "...Hm...Did anyone come to the office, a delivery worker, or someone, in the last two weeks maybe?"
That would be odd, since Phoenix got all his mail for the office sent to a P.O. box near the courthouse.

He dashed the patties on both sides as they sizzled. "Hmm...When did this guy come by? I don't remember seeing a number anywhere." Unless that was amongst what was taken... "Heh, listen to me...I've been pratteling like a private eye all night..."
He got the patties on the buns with the tomatoes, the pickles, onions, and ketchup and dinner was served.

He stopped himself and remembered the last few conversations with Mia about his self confidence, or lack thereof.
"Well...I'll go get you a bed made up." He flashed her a smile and excused himself.
Halfway across town, a figure lay sleeping a restless sleep...
In his mind, a gunshot rings out. It is not the shot that startles him awake, but the blood curdling cry of pain afterwards.
Miles sat up in his bed, staring at the darkness of his room, hearing his heart and breath pounding in his chest. He wiped the sweat from his brow.

Maya thought about what Phoenix had said and nodded to him with a smile as he had gotten up to make her bed, just like in the old days. "Look Nick..." She started, getting up and walking over to him. "I'll stay with you! We can even get Pearly if you want!" She placed her hands together in front of her excitedly. "Just like before, I can help you, Pearly can help you and so can sis!"

Nick blinked at Maya. His mind went back to the old days...Her sleeping on his couch, hogging his bathroom in the mornings, eating his food...He had to admit, he missed the craziness of those wild days. Deep inside, he wanted to just pick her up and hug her till her bones broke.
On the outside however, Nick just smiled and patted her on the shoulder. "I'd love to have you guys with me again...we'll talk to Pearly tomorrow and see what she thinks."
The Apartment once more felt just a little bite more like a home.
[Miles's apartment]
Miles staggered into the kitchen, dressed in a pair of flannel briefs and a brief muscle shirt. He had a odd swagger to his step, way different from the dignified stride he normally exhibited.
His brain was wide awake as he poured himself some juice and sat at the quaint dining table, pulling the shades open to look at the city lights. He was reliving DL-6 all over again, minute by minute...The struggle...the throw...the gunshot...the scream...then the suffocating darkness, and waking up in that hospital bed.
He sipped his juice in silence, fighting his mind to push away the memories. That was then, this is now...he thought of the girl sleeping nearby, and what she meant, what she symbolized. This girl...his sister...She symbolized a new beginning for him. To start fresh...to wipe the slate clean of all the nightmares and go on. He'd do it for her.

Maya smiled at Phoenix and nodded happliy. "Pearly will be happy to come back, I'm sure!" She looked at the couch as Phoenix was preparing it. "You know Nick, this is going to be good..." She had started on an insightful note. "Even thought something bad happened, I think that....it's going to make something better..." She looked up at Nick. "Don't you feel the name Nick?"

She had never known anything about her past, so her mind would put thoughts into her dreams....that and she would see the past. Thing things that had happened at the orphanage that were worse then bad. She was having more trouble sleeping, wimpering and crying in her sleep. Not that she knew but it was loud enough that Miles' could hear her.

Miles past by her as he was returning to his room. Her cries had caught him off guard, and for a moment, he watched her sleep, unsure whether to wake her, or to let her lie. He eventually returned to his room, the need for sleep taking over, falling face first into his bed, asleep before he hit it.

Maya nodded happily. "Yup, that's right Nick. Everything always works out okay for us." After saying this and watching him finish preparing her sleeping place she gave him a tight hug and then sat down with a bounce on the couch. "Night Nick, have a good sleep!" She then proceded to lay down on her side and cover herself with the blanket she always used when at Phoenix's Apartment. Maya was definatly exhausted.

Nick grumbled as he staggered into his kitchen, fumbeling for the coffee maker. Sleep hadn't come too easy last night, as his brain wouldn't shut up until almost two in the morning. He finally managed to get the Coffee Maker to perform it's function, and waited as the bubbeling blackness fill the pot. Coffee, Joe, Mud, Liquid Courage, Motor Oil...whatever you called it, he needed it.

Miles was already up and dressed in his usual crisp, clean dress clothes, minus the jacket. He sipped some tea, watching the morning sun wash over the city. Another cup sat across from him, waiting for the young girl to stir.

It took at least a half an hour after Phoenix got up for Maya to awaken, she wasn't one to wake up early....she liked sleeping in. She woke up to the smell of coffee, it was something so framilliar from when she had stayed with Phoenix before. "Mmmm Nick..." She mumbled getting up and stumbling for the kitchen. "....You made coffee..." She had a sleepy smile on her face.

Amy had gotten up a little bit after Miles had. She had never been used to sleeping in so it just came naturally. After sitting up for a second and wiping the sleep from her eyes Amy could see Miles at the Kitchen table with his tea. She slowly walked over to him quietly.

Nick returned the sleepy smile, and the two just stood there facing each other, shoulder hunched, expressions drowsy. Finally, the coffee machine started gurgling and filling the pot. Nick looked between Maya and the machine. He poured them both some, and leaned against the breakfast bar.
"Ugh...alright, wakey wakey, Nick...Sheesh...Mia always managed to get to the office at 6am sharp...how did she do it?"

Maya's smile widened as Phoenix had passed her the cup of coffee. "Ah...thanks Nick!" Maya wasn't usually one to drink coffee (she was already hyper enough), but she didn't have all that much sleep...and so this was one of those moments where she'd drink coffee. "...." She was quiet sipping out of the cup and listening to Nick, she wasn't sure if he was talking to her or to himself...so she responded anyways. "I dunno how sis did it, I'm certainly not going to get up that early...not unless there's a special episode of Pink Princess on TV....or...of it they brought back the Steel Samurai!" She nodded in a decisive manner.

Amy smiled and walked over to the table sitting down across from her brother. "Really?" She looked slightly shocked. "Well.....I guess I slept better then I usually...do, so I must look more rested..." She shrugged slightly, it was true. Even with everything that had happened through her sleep she had managed better then her usual night. "You look rested too.." She nodded and then took a sip of the tea that he had poured for her...it was her first time having tea. "This stuff is good..." She looked inside the glass. "Never had tea before...but it's good...."

Maya was still sipping on her own coffee, half listening to Phoenix and half listening to nothing. However once he had mentioned the case she looked up from the cup. "Oh! That's right..." She scratched the back of her head nervously. "Well, I sorta said that you'd take the case. It was a case about someone named....Uh...what...was it...again..." She was trying to think. "Oh! That's right!" Maya pulled up her right sleeve and looked at the inside of her arm. "It's the Arland Hackman case!" She nodded to Phoenix and pointed to her arm. "See Nick!"

Amy smiled back, she was still enjoying the tea...slightly faster then Miles was. She looked up from the cup as he started to talk to her, listening intently. "Well...I don't really have anywhere to be......" She paused. "....but, I think I'd better show up at the Orphanage....I'll tell them....I don't need them anymore....that or they'll have the police after me..." In her mind the word "again" following her sentence. "......" She felt slightly akward, no one there liked her....in fact she was treated quite badly. Those things that people only imagined happened in movies and stories about places like this...that was Amy's reality. "....I...If you...don't want to come...it's alright..." She looked down ashamed. She didn't want to go alone....but....

Nick definately saw it alright, written in bright blue sharpie. He wasn't sure if he should tell her that was not going to come off easily.
"Arland Hackman, hmm?" He'd never heard the name before. But he must have been someone of some note if someone was willing to break into his office and steal the case file. "So was this Hackman fellow the victim, or our client?"

Maya looked at her arm proudly, she figured that she had found the best new way to memorize things. She looked up from arm at Nick. "That's the victim...." She then pulled down her sleeve and ironically pulled up her other one. "Our Client's name is....James Morin!" She showed Nick her other arm. "See!" She smiled widely, maybe it was a bad idea for her to have the coffee....

After breakfast, Miles made plans to contact the orphanage. He sat on the edge of his desk as he dialed the number.
"This is Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth." He emphasized the last name, the tone of his voice the same venomous snap so well known in court rooms. "I would like to speak with your headmaster concerning custody of Miss Amy Edgeworth."

"Should I get you a pen so that you can try it too?" She smiled at him with one of her wide grins that she would alway give when she was excited or proud of herself. She thought about it after he had mentioned the Office. "You're right!" She sprang up. "We have to get ready fast!" With that she ran into the bathroom at locked the door....Maya's definition of fast was definatly not the same as Phoenix's.

As soon as Miles' had asked so a woman came onto the phone. "....I'm the Headmistress here..." She sounded sharp, her voice was brittle and unforgiving. "I was told this had to do with Amy Edgeworth?" She paused, she sounded almost mocking when she had said the girl's name. "What would you want with a girl like that?" She seemed to stress the fact that she thought little of Amy. She obviously didn't know who Miles was, that or she did not fear him as others did.

Nick watched the bathroom door shut, and prayed she didn't find the magazines under the sink. He scratched the back of his head as he drank his coffee...but after all, he was but a man. A man with needs like any other man. His cell phone began to ring, filling the apartment with the familiar styles of the Steel Samurai theme, and for a moment, he could swear he heard Maya singing along.
"This is Phoenix."
"Hey pal, it's gumshoe. You comin' into the office today?"
"Was the plan. You guys find anything yet?"
"Went over it with a fine tooth comb, but you know it is. No details over the phone, Pal. But I do have good news, and bad news for you right now." "Alright...Goods news first, hmm?" "We found a few bits and pieces from the case file you reported stolen in the alley nearby. The rain did 'em no favors, but we could still make out the label on the back. Good thinkin' labeling your evidence, pal. Real professional." *Is he mocking me?*"Right, right, what's the bad news?"
"Yer not gonna like it, Pal..." "Spit it, Gumshoe...I've dealt with worse." "You...uh...might get pulled from the case..."

"Yes..." Miles eased off the desk and glanced over at his computer screen. "This is Miles Edgeworth. I'm calling to request a transfer of custody of Amy Edgeworth into my own." Inside, for some reason or another, he was desiring a showdown of wits with this woman. He kept his tone calm and cool, as he always did, with just a hint of malevolance. Curt, precise. The Von Karma method of negotiation. However, this wasn't a courtroom battle...this woman was nothing more than a civil servant, although questionable, so he forced himself not to unload what ammunition he had there and now. "I've already prepared the necessary paperwork, and should be arriving by fax within the next few minutes." On his computer, he pulled up some info about the Orphanage sent to him by a few choice sources. Ammo.
"To answer a few querrys, yes I am of the immediate family...elder brother to be precise, my birth certificate should amongst the documents, along with other records, amongst other things."
He browed through a few files on his computer, his smile growing a bit more vicious. "Am I forgetting anything?"

Maya had spent about 45 minutes in the bathroom, during that time the water was going on and off and on and off...She was singing loudly and not quite well enough to sound bad. Once she was done she walked out in her fresh clothes, she had brought a pack with her...almost like she knew Nick was going to let her stay. ESP? Nope. She just knew Nick better then he knew himself. She walked over to Nick with a big smile on her face. "I'm done!"
[Miles' Apartment]
Amy had continued on listeing. He was good....he had everything, even shew knew that. Though one thing worried her, this woman was difficult to manage. She had confidence in her brother though.
[Orphanage]
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment. "....No, that's everything...." She paused slightly angered at how well prepared he was. "You'll have to bring her down here though, you need to sign papers. I can't simply let you have her....that would be high irresponable of me.." Her eyes narrowed as she regained her arrgoant personality. "....I expect you'll be arriving with her soon?"

Luckily, during the time Maya was in the bathroom, Nick had remembered he kept a razor and some deodorant by the sink from way back when, and had gotten into some clean clothes, albeit with a hint of razor burn. Soap wasn't adequate for shaving.
"Yeah..." He had that slightly paniced tinge to his voice, like something bad had happened, the way he was struggeling to get his tie on right. "Gumshoe's meeting us over at the office..."
[Miles]
"Of course, I understand entirely." He struck back against her arrogant tone with a cheerful, respectable tone of his own. "We will be there within the hour, however I would like to note that we will not be kept waiting. I have a high profile case at ten, and I would be so much in your debt if we made this a speedy transaction." That was more or less a lie, Miles had been comissioned to act as Prosecution for a murder that was yet to come to trial, not for several days at least. It was more or less simply to put a little heat on the headmistress. "Is there anything I need to bring with me besides Amy?"

Maya looked at Nick oddly, her smile slowly fading. "....What...what happened Nick?" She stared at him trying to fix his tie. "....Gumshoe is at the office?...Okay, that's good! Maybe he'll find something, c'mon Nick! We have to hurry! You don't want them to think you're lazy..." She promptly grabbed him by the wrist and started out of the apartment.
[Miles' Apartment]
Amy had heard the last of Miles' sentences and she closed her eyes walking away from the door...she seemingly didn't want to listen anymore.
[Orphanage]
The woman was silent and then came the sound of ruffling papers, she had gotten Miles' fax. "No, just bring the girl. I'll make is as quick as I can but I've got some things to talk to you about..." She replied sharply. "Is that all?" She added curtly, as if she wanted to end the conversation.
