I also really like your Professor Layton, even though I haven't played it myself. Somehow, his face looks so... right.
His top hat seems a smidge off, though, I think it's at slightly the wrong angle?

Only two things really stick out to me-- the right side of his face (our left) seems a little jagged since you've gotten rid of the outline, but if you just copy&paste the original outline back on it looks good again. :D Also, the spot where his wrist meets his forearm seems a little like an "angle" right now, you should maybe stagger the line on his forearm to meet his wrist more gently. (Does that even make sense?)
Anyway, also I really like the use of that silly smile Maya always has on her older sprite, but the area around her right hip (our left) looks strangely lumpy.
And PROFESSOR LAYTON PROFESSOR LAYTON PROFESSOR LAYTON rocks. Although PW-itised, he's kinda creepy because of his tiny, round eyes. >_> but nicely done, nontheless! On the topic of his hat, maybe you could alter something from Trucy? The angle of the hat from the first frame from her "zomg" pose (actual name of the .gif ._.) might work, maybe....

And sorry but No, my point is still valid. Just lowering the crotch will not help much in the overal result, It might be nessecary but widening the hips/legs will have more inpact.
