Search has now been turned back on, after the insistence of many people, and all those people making the (now deleted) "Error" and "Search disabled" threads, especially Ryu.

It now uses a fulltext MySQL backend, built into the existing post table, but... enjoy!

Posting to report something:

I've noticed that since this announcement, the board has been responding to queries much more slowly and the loading speed of the forums has dropped significantly because of this. Perhaps a few backend tweaks are in order?

Does we even do these things anymore?

I've dropped the overhead from the tables (i.e. ran an optimize query) and have noticed the load time on the index page drop from 42 to 4 seconds.

If you still notice problems, let me know.

Also, please check it's not just your connection by looking at the TIME number at the bottom.

Yup - sometimes. And only 30 seconds? I hit 120!

There's not much we can do - load on the server seems to be fluctuating a lot, but it did that (for me) even before all of this.

Aside from moving the Forums DB from a remote server, of course...

BUMP to add bad news: Due to the problems we've been having (slow pages) i've had to add a server load limit of 0.7. If server load is above that, search will automatically become disabled.

Just temporary. As soon as server load drops below that, search will come back.

Since this change was made, server load has stayed quite low. I suspect a bot was spamming the search command...
