No, it wouldn't.

In any case, my primary concern with the Takarazuka theatre is the fact that the format and style are all very Japan-exclusive, and wouldn't translate as well as other theatre productions that get localization. It's one thing to be robbed of our GS concerts, which have symphonies and groups that can simply be transported around, since the music is easy to transport between cultures... it's another to have something so blatantly Japanese slapped in our face. Even if they could bring it to the States, it wouldn't carry the same weight, and it wouldn't sit well with the fans due to the culture gap and lack of context in our society. It's something that is inherently alien to us.

Sexism isn't the issue, it's cultural indifference.

And that is the worst realization a fan can ever come to.

Thanks! I may take you up on your offer. Going to a play is always more fun if you go with a friend.

Maybe I'll get a second job.... Quiznos doesn't exactly pay well.

Anyway, here's the appeal of P/E in this situation: it would be dubba gay. Simultaneously yaoi and yuri. Yaori?

Although some het romance would be nice. Miego, anyone?

Um. Gyakuten Saiban is first and foremost a Japanese series. :| You can't fault them for having a project that primarily appeals to a Japanese audience.

Besides, just think of all the Western anime fans that prefer the subbed, honest translations as opposed to the dubbed localizations. There are PLENTY of Weeaboos* who will eat this musical up. That being said, it never hurts anyone to try something different; to take the time to appreciate a style of art that exists only in another country. It's called being "cultured".

*When I use the term "Weeaboo", I use it with love. <3

Uhm... No kidding. And saying that you are being "robbed"? That's sorta.... stupid. Capcom doesn't have to do anything for the western fans.... In fact, financially speaking, the western fan's willingness to pay for stuff like this compared to the Japanese people who are right there, which takes out the transporting over borders cost, is soooo insignificant. Capcom honestly will not make any sort of money trying to bring the orchestra to US or Europe. There won't be as a big of a response as it will have in Japan. And Capcom will LOSE money. Orchestra or musical, it WON'T come to US unless the fans can show that they WILL buy it out and make up for it so that the revenue outweighs the cost... so that there IS something for Capcom on the bottom line.

Honestly, it's really not that hard to understand.

Phoenix Wright IS something blatantly Japanese. It's a game made by Japanese, meant for Japan, initially.

So if you are not willing to accept and learn new cultures, you have no right to whine about how a company made a decision about this. Is it really Capcom's fault that US and such won't accept its culture? I don't think so.

Instead of whining so much about how you are getting shitted over, you really should think about becoming a more open minded person. Even normal musical productions don't see light in US, such as Tenimyu or Seramyu whatever... So it's not the fact that Capcom picked this one troupe... It's more that the fans won't be as enthusiastic in US as they are in Japan.

Tough.

Maybe you should've tried harder to understand.

Okay, lady. Let's sit down, have a piece of cake and some tea. Calm down. What I am personally upset about here is that Capcom had a very good chance to win over an international audience with an anime, which will also cost much less to produce than a musical, where the troupe, backstage crew, and all other assistants and the like must get paid, probably a huge sum of money. In the long run, how will that pay off? Even if it's likely to draw more fans in, we'd actually like to, you know, be thrown a bone every once in a while.

Companies are driven by money. Simple fact, no? Products are already developed in a country, why not port them elsewhere? The pros outweight the cons. Any businessperson could tell you that much. And it's not so much being closed minded as mad that America and Europe are getting pushed aside even after Capcom stated that they cared about their Western fans.. How unfair is that? It's one thing to not even mention your Western fanbase, but a completely different thing to say something and do another. That's extremely unfair to us.

Isn't it Capcom of America's responsibility to measure how exactly they would profit from things like musicals and concerts? I think they're becoming lax and focusing on other franchises, if you ask me. That is why we're not getting the things we want; they've got their eyes somewhere else, now we have to create something that will turn their heads back over here.

Then whine to Capcom of America, not Japan, and stop whining about the Japanese culture.

And they never said Anime was out of the plan, right? -_- And anime producing still costs a lot.... and unless you are a successful financial guru that knows all about Capcom's finances (ha not that there are that many financial investment bank-y people after last week... --; ) , you can't really say that anime > musical in terms of cost. And even if anime series are produced, it costs money to bring it to another country. In any case, they are trying something out. And things like these actually takes a LONG time to plan and put into action. They are not gonna go into something if it is obviously not going to profit. Thus, don't worry your pants off about how the musical will not be great in the long run.

And if Capcom wants to focus on other franchises, fine. That's their decision. If you want to make a change, go and be part of the creative team of Capcom and change it. If not, don't whine so much. People just have been whining w/o doing much. If you can make their heads turn back, good for you... but if you haven't done anything so much, don't whine about what Capcom does. Dogs don't get treats if they don't do anything to deserve it.

And people hanging onto that one sentence by that one representative... Seriously... calm down... and do something more productive like actually writing something to Capcom.... whining on Court Records doesn't constitute as trying to convince Capcom to do something. When Capcom says that what fans care about matters, they aren't like lying... they do care, probably to some degree... but not so much that they'll be randomly perusing through CR to find disgruntled fans and solve their needs.

not true, actually. in the past there have been capcom staff members looking through CR to see what is popular and what the fans want. matsukawa knows about us, too - so it's actually not pointless to discuss it here.

I am down with this.

First off, several musicals have been made of anime that were never supposed to make it overseas, and yet it is possible to download them, some of them with English subtitles. I have an old copy of the Utena musical (Takarazuka-style) on VHS, which was done by the same group that did all of the Sailor Moon musicals. All of these can be found on the internet. Hell, even before the internet made circulation of this stuff spread like wildfire, I could find them on VHS. Bleach had its own musical, which, though not Takarazuka-style (it had male actors), also found its way into broad internet distribution. It's technically illegal, but heh.

I'm excited, for one. It's going to be so camp and so over the top and awesome. The romance better be Phoenix/Miles, so help me God.

Being both a fan of Ace Attorney AND Takarazuka, Its a little disappointing to see how negative most of the comments are on this going to be turned into a Takarazuka production. For starters, this is a little facts on Takarazuka:

1) Takarazuka is an all female REVUE company formed in 1913 specializing in Musicals and revue (that said, Ace Attorney is a musical, not opera). There are over 400 actresses divided into 5 troupes within the company. The 5 troupes being Flower, Moon, Snow, Star and Cosmos, with Cosmos being the troupe performing Ace Attorney. Each troupe have their own Top Star, the highest ranking actress.

2) On Cosmos (Or in Japanese, Soragumi)
This is the youngest troupe in the company being formed only in 1998. While they used to enjoy sell-out theatres in their earlier days under the 1st and 2nd Top Stars, the tickets sales, in a very Takarazuka Point of view are not really up to scratch under the current(4th) Top Star.

3) Ace Attorney AND Takarazuka
Ace Attorney is not a main Takarazuka production. Neither is the actress (Ranju Tomu) performing as Phoenix a Top Star, which IS a blessing in disguise (The current top star is a 'great' singer who will no doubt make you cringe in your seat when she starts :grey: ) For speculation sake, Maya's role could go to either Miwa Asahi or Hanakage Arisu. As Cosmos would be involved in another production(more major) during the same time with the current Top Star, the actual cast for Ace Attorney would not be a strong one, with most roles taken by the younger actresses.

4) Miscellaneous
There should be a DVD available 1-2 months after the performance costing around 8400yen. As with most Japanese DVDs, it is a available in Japan only product.
For those catching the shows, tickets will start selling 1-11/2 months before the start of the run in CNplayguide, TicketPia, LawsonTickets and the Tokyo Takarazuka Theatre ticket counter.

Screw you guys. Opera is awesome.

Final Fantasy VI anyone? Parasite Eve? Eternal Sonata?

Although it's shaping up to be more of a musical, an opera would be awesome.

Isn't it, though? Then they know the demand is there!!

The more I watch youtube videos, the more I'm getting excited about this. I first learned about them a couple years ago from the Zuka group spoof of them on Ouran High School Host Club, I decided to look Takarazuka up. I saw a mess of the Rose of Versailles videos, but didn't explore further. Now watching some of the dances and singing and such, it's pretty amazing and colorful and I think I have a new crush, lol..

But then again, I'm in absolute love with musicals (I've seen Phantom of the Opera a few times with the original Toronto cast, Les Mis, La Cage aux Folles, etc. etc.) This is like a combination of all my loves all in one.

I think everyone's problem is that they were getting their hopes up in seeing an anime, and their hopes were shot down, just like with Gyakuten Kenji (which'll be awesome sauce)

Well, I guess I'll just shell out. Hopefully Play-Asia will be selling the DVD, and if not, I'm sure that I'll be able to find it on Ebay or something.

Yeeeeeeeeeah, because it isn't like this site doesn't (or didn't, I dunno if they're still here) translated Manga scans, something Capcom's actually releasing here. If they don't expect people to download this once it's made available, then they're a little dense. Besides, I doubt Capcom USA really cares about people downloading something they're never going to get any money out of anyway.

The manga that is currently on CR is not the same as the manga that Del Rey just released. They put out the official Doujin Anthology. CR is hosting the official serialized manga. If Capcom ever announced that they were publishing the official manga in English, our fanscans would be down immediately.

Without fanpeople clouded minds, think back to the games and notice the lack of much romance throughout the series at all, especially not in Rise from the Ashes.

I think this is highly unlikely--the actress playing Phoenix is dressed up in his suit, right? :sadshoe: That makes the timeframe for Miego impossible... He doesn't seem like the type to have worn suits to college.
I... yeah. I'm really curious to see how exactly they work romance into it, and how it'll fit with the canon... :yogi:

As far as I know, operas are usually considered as fan shows rather than canon projects. It's not a Capcom staff who writes the opera script. Thus the only difference between this opera and the other fan stage shows is, all the performers are professional.

I can be wrong though. I'm not an expert on animation opera after all.

As far as I know, operas are usually considered as fan shows rather than canon projects. It's not a Capcom staff who writes the opera script. Thus the only difference between this opera and the other fan stage shows is, all the performers are professional.

I can be wrong though. I'm not an expert on animation opera after all.

Usually the term canon applies only to official products from the company in the original medium. Using that definition, only the games themselves are canon. However, Capcom has released official manga in Japan so they may be considered canon too. There are also the art books (not sure who released them, but I'm sure Capcom had a hand in them considering they have information about the characters not otherwise known from the games.)

I highly doubt the opera would ever be considered canon, especially in the eyes of the GS fans.

I think Takarazuka will do a pretty good job on this. To me, the GS series always had an "overdramatic" flair which I think will fit a musical (or opera for some of you) theme very well. Plus, Takarazuka is very good at what they do even for females playing male roles. I've seen "Berusaiyu no Bara" ("Rose of Versailles") and the females playing the males (Andre and Axel) were very effective.

Perhaps it will be good or it may be bad but like some others here, I don't appreciate the ones making judgment or complaining before actually seeing it or even considering the idea for a moment. Yes, it may sound a bit strange but it's really because of cultural differences. Still, you cannot blame the Japanese for doing a production that suits their audience when the GS series is originally a Japanese creation. For those who think it's unfair that the West isn't getting much attention even though sales were a success, think about it: the series was originally on the GBA back in 2001/2002 in Japan. There was nothing stopping CAPCOM from releasing it in the West even back then but they didn't because they probably didn't think it'd be a success then. And rightly so too because Western audiences weren't exactly open to these sorts of things back then yet (and this can be said about everyone's now "precious" anime when I was ridiculed to death for being a long-time fan of anime back then). So you fans should just be grateful that the GS series even saw the light of day here for you to experience and be the mega-fans you are now, thanks to the DS and thanks to people being just a teeny bit more open to text-adventure games (even though there are tons of these sorts of games in Japan that will never release here).

So stop complaining about the lack of love in the West, an anime or some other thing that's appeals to the West will probably turn up soon.

The manga that is currently on CR is not the same as the manga that Del Rey just released. They put out the official Doujin Anthology. CR is hosting the official serialized manga. If Capcom ever announced that they were publishing the official manga in English, our fanscans would be down immediately.

Oh, sorry about that. I didn't realize that they were different. Well, I guess it still just reinforces what I said about Capcom USA not caring about the "piracy" of Japan-Only items.

On an unrelated note:

As far as it being a romantic story, there so little material for it. The only canon relationship is
Spoiler: Game 3
Phoenix/Iris
right? I don't think they'd start at case 3-5. Initially when I heard about it I instantly thought they were going to do something with Phoenix/Maya. I thought about it for a bit and realized there's not too much to go on there. The only case that could really be rewritten to justify that pairing is 2-4, and I can't see them starting there either. The most logical starting point is 1-1 combined with 1-2, but the only relationship you could even create there is Phoenix/Mia, and that seems kind of "blah". I'm mulling over this and I'm not even a pairings nut ='/ It'll be interesting to see what they do with it to say the least.

Oh, I don't know, I'm sure there are P/E fangirls out there who would try to use any appearance of it in even a non-canon thing like this as evidence for their pairing being "canon". XD

As for me, I'm fairly disappointed in this news. Opera in any language just isn't really my thing. (Unless it's being performed by Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.) I'm sure this makes me uncultured swine in the eyes of some people here, but that's just the way I am. ^^ To each their own, after all.

In the anime Sakura Wars (Which is also a video game series. Well, that's where the anime spawned from.) they have a troupe of women who perform plays, and it's a nod to the Takarazuka Kagekidan. ^_^ So, I'm interested mainly just from that. <3 This is going to be awesome. XD

wait
what

what's the quote on this? i hadn't heard that

On the Top Secret podcast a few months ago one of the fan questions was "When are Phoenix and Miles going to get together!?" and her response was something close to, "We're going to continue to make quality games, so... save that for your imagination."

AKA "never". Hahaha, oops.

As for canon, this is how I see it:

Totally Canon: The games.

Canon if you feel like it: The interviews, the fanbook notations (things like "Edgeworth has a dog named Pess")

Not really Canon: The manga and doujins. I really don't consider the manga canon because it wasn't done by anyone on the GS staff, and they don't designate a specific timeframe that it takes place in. The way I see it, if you can't fit it on the timeline, it doesn't really count.

If the musical takes place during some undetermined time period, and especially if it contradicts things that happen in the series (like if Phoenix ends up married by the end or something, to someone who doesn't exist in the games) then I wouldn't count it as "canon".

Man, that is such a big slap in the face. Not that I care because I think its more fun when things are left to speculation. You have a great sense of humor Croik. That kind of official statement has never stopped you from using your imagination in fan fiction.

I think that is good disection of what falls under canon and not canon. Thanks for clarifying that for everyone.

Unless you have a region 2 DVD player, any 'Japanese' region 0 DVD you are able to play on an American (region 1) DVD player is more than likely a Taiwanese counterfeit. So, either way, CAPCOM doesn't see the money.

This is Epic Win. Epic, Epic win.

Imagine the Judge!

...Godot! <3 Can I say Epic Win even more??

True, not an anime, but I'm totally in love with the idea. When you really think about it, how far off is an opera to say--live action movies? How many of those did Death Note have? Any other anime, for that matter? If anything, this opera could be a stepping stone to an anime.

Either or, the nuttiness of it all is purely amusing. Just the thought makes me laugh. I'm actually kind of surprised that this gender bending aspect isn't more appealing to the anime fans. I mean, this aspect is in almost EVERY ANIME. And for those who think it's wrong for an all female cast, consider this: There are various all male and all female theator troops out there. Shakespeare's plays were all originally performed with an ALL MALE crew. (Come on peeps. Shakespeare. Classical. One Gender Casts are in our theater roots XD)

Plus, what better excuse for us cosplayers to need if we wanted to be a girl dressed as Phoenix, or some other male character?

And, if all goes well, think of the type of stuff they could do with an opera featuring a certain prosecutor from Apollo Justice? More Epic Win, if I do say.

And whomever mentioned the Yaoi/yuri aspect gets bonus cookies from me! I'm a girl whom loves me some yuri X3

Multiregion DVD player for the win...!

I like some J-Pop even though I don't know a fair bit of what's being sung... this might appeal, depends how important the lyrics are heh...
