I've loved GS for a long long time now, but I have to admit I was greatly dissapointed with the "Phoenix Wright Files" that were just released in the states. I must admit I'm not very knowledgable about the history of GS manga, but I'm questiong why they didn't bring over the more serious, complete, stories rather then the stupid fluff that is the Phoneix Wright files.

I do not find an endless stream of puns about objections, cross-examinations, evidence, turanabouts to be funny. There is a reason that puns are considered the lowest form of comedy and this manga is the proof.

This manga reminds me of the first release of Digi Charat manga that came out in this country. I was ultimately dissapointed in that as well, because like this manga, all those four volumes consisted of were random stories from random artists with inconsistant art. The stories hardly ever made any sense which would have been fine if they were funny, but I just plainly did not find them to be. Both it and the Phoenix Wright Files, rather seemed to be a bunch of inside jokes between the artist and their friends which left the reader strangely out of the loop with most of the humor.

The characters in GS are charming, but not to extent that I want to watch them stumble around their office and get into random situations. Heck, a lot of the crap that happened could have been in ANY manga, and had nothing to do with GS rather then characters as stereotypes of themselves.

I didn't laugh, I wasn't amused, and frankly found it boring. The reason GS works is because the characters personality's shine in light of a very interesting story. Watching Phoenix interrogate a kitten for the strange reason of making it "cough-up" his attorney badge (haha get it to cough-up, like a witness coughs-up the truth! I get it!) is not interesting, it just makes him look like a friggin' idiot. The characters just come off as random anime stereotypes.

I had to go on a rant, because I was expecting so much more when I saw that in the book store the other day. Bah!

...Are you an idiot? Or are you just plain stupid? We KNOW that somehow we were NOT really dissapointed but Ive heard LOTS of fans were happy and lucky to buy the PW Files.I still didnt buy it yet,but some of my friends in the internet said that it was hilariouse and could me really amusing.Besides, fans in here wont really like it by the time when they read this topic "The Manga is stupid".So if you don't like it,go to hell for wasting your time buying it. :zenny:

So if George Lucas' next Star Wars movie is nothing but a 10 minute clip of sock puppet theatre he did alone in his basement, we have no reason to complain because we shouldn't have been wasting our time in the first place by watching it?
That argument doesn't make any sense. I'm on this forum and I'm assuming so are you because we're both fans of GS, and as such don't like to see it not being handled to a certain level of value. (Not to mention you seem to assert that its okay because manga has no value as art anyway. A contention that I strongly disagree with and so does Japan's publishing industry.)

I guess I'm crazy for thinking this, but I like stories that are actually clever and through provoking. While I won't go as far as to say that the "Phoenix Wright Files" are bereft of any wit or value whatsoever, I am saying that I was greatly dissapointed. The more I read it, the more I realized it wasn't what I was hoping for.

GS is a story about a lawyer, not about a guy who happens to use the word objection every now and again. Therefore I want something at least AKIN to a legal drama. Incorporating legal terms at their basic level of definition DOES NOT DOES NOT DOES NOT! equal a legal drama.

The characters in GS are great, but I don't think their personalities have so much value that you can yank them out of their own universe and the tenants of their strong characterization will stand out. Seriously, replace "Steel Samurai" with candy, and law office with "dance studio" and it wouldn't have changed the story at all!

"Gee we aren't getting any client today. Lets do this story about a cat." It could have been legal clients or dance clients for all that it matters in many of the stories.

I will say this, if you're the type who likes anime things for the sake that they're anime things, then yes, you may like this manga. If you like GS though, no you will not like this manga. (Unless of course just seeing Edgeworth brings you to orgasm)

Personally, I can absolutely and completely concur with everything you've said here, Naruhodo.

I, too, was sorely disappointed, especially after having waited so long and so anxiously in the belief that the excellent serious GS manga was to be brought from my homeland here to America. Personally, I was very angry to discover that it was nothing but a bunch of shitty gag stories rather than the serious, thought-provoking cases I'd waited for, and to add injury to insult (yes, that was intentional), said shitty gag stories were awful, boring, and oftentimes even failed to make any sense at all. Not to mention how idiotically shippy some of them kept getting.

These are the kinds of comics I see on Japanese personal sites and on Myspace, and are certainly not the kind of thing to be compiled into a book and charged fifteen dollars for. In fact, such was my disdain with the horrid book that I returned it to the bookseller the first opportunity I got.

...Ah, feels good to get all of that out.
I'm not typically one to show anger...
I had intended it as a joke, but they took it as sage advice.

No wonder CAPCOM's so late or maybe so lazy?
Look,Square-Enix made KH (Which this game sucks balls~) and has several SERIOUSE manga volumes. And has lots!
But GS has only 4 and 2 Casefiles. Why won't they work so hard through and through? Srsly,I'm dissapointed! )<

GS as a whole is pretty light when it comes to storytelling, so I can't completely damn this manga for containing a lot of fluff. However...it pretty much takes the cake on fluff. I mean at least GS has the background of murders and legal offices to bring the tone a little bit down to earth, but in this manga they basically completely throw that away, hence making the characters dance around a bright world filled with kitten, noodles, and silly sight gags.

Yea Mayoi is cute and all...but I wouldn't be playing GS if it was just some 20 odd hours of her acting cute all the time. Furthermore I want to see Naruhodou kicking butt in the courtroom, not palling around with random characters basically doing nothing every chapter.

Its not super serious business, but I do believe its deserving of some base level of quality. Croik believes in it enough that she spends money to maintain this site, and I care enough about it continously buy the games and other products. I believe there was basically a breach of that quality in this atrocity of a doujin compilation that bears the name "Phoenix Wright" on it.

I'm not exactly harping on it for not being accurate in its portrayal of legal practises after all. If I were I would have to agree with you.

I kinda liked it, but I was hoping for something more serious. Like Turnabout in the Wind / Gallows. Why don't they translate / release it here?
Still, some chapters were good and funny, but others didn't make any sense, the characters acted OOC and so on (Turnabout Kitten is the worst of the bunch).

The title and the text on the back of the book are VERY misleading and not true. It's worse than what are written on the back of Disney DVD's (seriously, I bet those who wrote them hadn't seen the films before).

What I missed was the pairings... there weren't any at all. Maybe it's understandable, since it would aggravate the fans of other pairings.
But the games (especially 3-5) had shippish moments. This manga didn't (except for Turnabout Day Off, which is my favorite).

I'm sorry you were disappointed Naruhodou, but if you had done your homework before hand you would have known what you were getting into. I've been telling people for months that the Del Rey manga was a doujin anthology (it's mentioned on the site too). Scans of the Japanese version have even floated around for a while... Maybe Del Rey shouldn't have marketed it as "Case Files" as that's somewhat misleading, but no one's tried to hide what's really in that book.

As for the official manga... personally I think it's just as bad. Especially the weekly published KiraKiraLand story that came out last summer. Official or not, it's OOC filler, and I kind of hope it doesn't come out over here. Anyone reading it would not get a good impression of Phoenix, that's for sure :\

I liked Turnabout in the Wind, and it didn't feel OOC.

Filler, I agree, but I'm not asking for more from a manga.
Crucial story points should be in the games.

The first chapter of KiraKiraLand is - Turnabout Showtime. We were only ever able to get our hands on the first chapter (I think in total it was supposed to be 6). I think I can safely say that no one on CR's staff is interested in tackling it.

The premise is that Maya drags Phoenix to Kira Kira Land, a theme park that seems to cater to pre-schoolers. Maya's Steel Samurai obsession is funny, but the in this case the manga goes overboard and makes her act like she's 4. Meanwhile, Phoenix immediately develops a crush on one of the performers because she reminds him of Dahlia - if you've played T&T you should know how WRONG that is - and spends the first chapter drooling over her like a pedo, joined by the case witness, a very typical sleezy otaku.

It's just... ugh. I think the artist must have started in hentai or something because the whole thing has a weird squick vibe to it. Like Phoenix Drive could interrupt at any monent...!!

Anyway, I really don't like that one >:I But yes, the first chapter is up in the Manga section.

I can agree with you there. It did seem very odd. Although, I did like the frame where Oldbag had all the pictures of Edgeworth.

Back on topic, there were moments in the Del Rey manga that were very boring. However, overall I enjoyed it for what it was. I think its a little harsh to say that if your a fan of GS, then you'll hate the manga. I wonder how the second volume will turn out since it's about Edgeworth and he is suppose to be a more serious character.

I'm part of the crowd that was kind of disappointed with the manga as well. I knew going into it that it was going to be a doujin collection, and I also expected that they would be stories that wouldn't involve any specific shippings for the sake of canon, but I wasn't expecting THIS much OOCness and fluff. Like people were saying before, I guess I was expecting more of a case going on in each story, but that never happens. They always jump straight to the conclusion, and skip all the bantering and crime scene stuff in between. I understand that the doujin artists might not be so good at putting together the crazy turnabout cases as Team Capcom, but if they love the games so much, maybe a bit more thought could be put into their stories? =\.. Now those are just the stories that involve cases for Phoenix. As for side stories, like the ramen-eating challenge? As thrilled as I was to see Edgeworth and Franziska duking it through food with Maya and Phoenix, I can't picture them doing something so "demeaning" (for their standards) for no real motive (they don't need free food, they're stinking rich! >_>). And yes, as mentioned before, yelling "Objection!" and "Take That!" at every possible thing in every day life does make not a Gyakuten Saiban story. Maybe I was misled to what it would be by reading the other manga scanlations on this site. I thought those were fine, at least IC for the most part.

The manga does have its moments though. Like Phoenix's dialogue being totally nasal through the entire strip when he has a cold, or Armstrong's weird French accent. Phoenix's dream of Dahlia was pretty much as serious as it got, and it only lasted a few pages. The first story was also the most true to the principles of the game I believe.

To conclude, I don't think I regret buying the manga as it still had its moments, but I guess I was just expecting more. Hopefully, The Edgeworth Cases will have a bit more substance though.

*shuffles her feet* ^_^;;

I really didn't mind this manga at all, but I did get into it knowing that it was a compilation of several doujins. So, I was expecting the OOC-ness, crackiness and fluff. ^_^;; I just took it as it was, and enjoyed the stories. ^_^ I especially loved the very first one.

I really wish they'd translate the official manga as well. I can only understand so much with my limited Japanese. ^_^;;

I'm enjoying it, but I had the same question- why would Miles and Franziska enter a humiliating noodle-eating contest? They can afford food, and decent food at that. Maybe Gumshoe would have made more sense in that comic.

Well I guess I am to blame for not doing my homework before buying it. Basically I was at the book store and my girlfriend walked up to me with the book in her hand, knowing how much I like Phoenix Wright. I just bought it on the spot without looking at it, figuring it was the official manga that I saw partly translated on this site.
I agree with those who said the description on the back is very misleading as it makes the manga seem deep and serious, possibly revealing important secrets about the characters and series. I suppose the 1st two chapters do...kinda...but after that not really. Makes me think the person who wrote that blurb didn't really read the whole manga.

I guess I'm partly for blame for not reaserching the manga I was buying, but I feel like I represent a class of people who like Phoenix Wright and bought the manga purely because it had his name on it. If you like a series and there is a manga of it, I don't think any reason is good enough for it to kinda suck.

As for the official manga. I must admit I wasn't wowed by it, but it definitely was better than this monstrosity. Seriously, read some of the digi charat manga that was released in this country, and tell me if you can even understand half the stuff that's going on in there. I really feel like half the doujin in The Phoenix Wright case files are part of some weird inside joke that I'm just not getting.

I always get annoyed when a character starts acting like a stereotype of themself. The writer takes one aspect of a character and enlarges it so it overencompasses every other part of them. Sometimes it can be good if the humor is well executed (see Homer Simpson) or it can just be plain stupid as it is here where fandom for a children's show translates to an almost complete regression to a puerile state.

I agree it did have some merit. The chapter with Grossberg helping Maya with finding a "waterfall" was pretty funny in how disturbing it was.

To conclude, I don't think I regret buying the manga as it still had its moments, but I guess I was just expecting more. Hopefully, The Edgeworth Cases will have a bit more substance though.

Was the bear in book one? Because if not, well.... that's something to look forward to, I guess?? :keiko:

YES. I've been wanting to read that story since forever.

Anyway, Naruhodo, I can totally see where you're coming from, and I can understand why people would be dissapointed with the doujin anthology. I personally do not share your opinion, as I found the manga to be highly enjoyable. Then again, I love fluff and crack and puns, so there you go.

So, yeah. The Del Rey manga is DEFINITELY not for everyone. But on the other hand, it's perfect for fans like me who just want a little cracky escapism between college and work.

I can agree so much. This is what sucked about the Aladdin cartoon series, too, and this is what sucks about many chapters in this manga.

Ugh. I love those special things that CAPCOM does for TGS, like that courtroom session over who would be AA4's protagonist, but that stuff's like the sugar/fat section on top of the food pyramid. USE SPARINGLY.
Me, like Naruhodou, I prefer a good mystery that just has good characters as a plus. Heck, this is why I like Phoenix Wright more than most products of Japan (know me personally, and I'm actually much more of an FPS player and anime-hater). From the looks of it though, I don't think I'd like the case files. Just because I like the G-man's character when he's telling Gordon to "rise and shine", doesn't mean I'd like seeing him in his "normal life", entering a headcrab-eating contest. Characters IN CONTEXT; that's what makes a story great.
Wait...where was I? G-Man? What...

Yes, some parts were silly and stupid, but I LOVED the manga!

I'm enjoying it, but I had the same question- why would Miles and Franziska enter a humiliating noodle-eating contest? They can afford food, and decent food at that. Maybe Gumshoe would have made more sense in that comic.

Maybe they don't have as much money as they think. NOT!

So, it's not worth my time, then? Darnit. I've been bugging my friend to buy it for me since before it even came out....That's a letdown. Then again, what could I expect? I'll just take it for what it is....And hope they eventually bother to translate the real magna. >_>

It's worth your time if you enjoy the type of humor it has.

Oh, how I hate this sort of thing. So much. -_-;;;

I was excited about them bringing over Phoenix Wright manga, but then when I did the research on what it actually is, my excitement quickly ebbed and I now have no interest whatsoever in it. I'm sure that other people like the sort of thing that it is, and that's okay, but it's just not for me.
