It's not out in Australia (and whatever markets share those releases), and there's no confirmed release date either. All I can say is, they'd better not region-lock the DS-successor. The main reason I hate the delays, is because it's as if they're trying to retcon the existence of game 3, releasing game 4 eons before and all that.The main thing we require is a proper mention of Maya still being intrinsic in Phoenix's life, beyond sending a few DVDs. I mean the reports thing is nice, but it's still not a reasonable followup from what we saw in 3-5. Even when Larry didn't appear in game 2, (which I didn't think was too weird because he was the kind of friend who you could imagine Phoenix meeting up with sometimes but not having to appear and be mentioned onscreen) we get some complicated story in game 3 about him following some girlfriend to Tibet to properly explain his absence in that game.
I think we also need a better fill-in over what happened with them sometime in the 7 years. GK developing into some kind of sub-series set in the 7 year gap where they get to show up is our only hope of this I guess. We just need one piece of evidence to sink those peoples' idea that they 'never saw each other for 7 years sob sob'.
Hmm. Maybe we need to start antagonising Capcom.

Hm, I really don't like it that I don't know what's happend with Phoenix and Maya. I don't think they never saw each other for 7 years ^^, because if you want to go to Kurain, you just have to drive 2 hours. Nick would do that. Except Maya isn't in Kurain..
Ah, btw, in the end of GS4 Phoenix said that he'll maybe do his exam again.

They didn't mention Maya because they didn't mention any of the other Phoenix-arc chars by name either, because they've basically 'ceased to exist' for plot and writing purposes. Originally the Apollo thing was supposed to be a totally separate arc but of course then Capcom demanded Phoenix be returned and then it ceased to really be a separate arc but they didn't bother integrating it properly with the original trilogy. Even though, as soon as they included Phoenix, it became a follow up to the old arc, not a new one.
They didn't tell Maya why Phoenix ran across the bridge, because every hint of that couple was shrouded in irony and obliviousness. ie. those nasty writers just liked to taunt us. Note Phoenix never got to see the card, either ;_;
Anyway, they seem to have committed to nothing for game 5, so I think it's still up in the air. Whether there's any possibility of Phoenix and any vestiges of his 3-5 life returning, I really think is up to fan outcry - probably Japanese fan outcry, since I doubt they pay much attention to minor Western markets, and I'm not sure that contact details for Matsukawa are exactly floating around? (Fact is - I can't bear Phoenix and Maya to be apart, even if there is never any official actual romance involved. I just want them to be together, dammit..)

Actually, I suddenly came up with this terrible epic and shippy-interpretable plot the other day, which combined a lot of popular fan ideas for game 5.. eheeheThanks again for the translations.. hmm.. page 4 is the best, simply for Phoenix's reaction. Actually, there's another comic by Cursor, in that 'Best Partner' book, which is set after either 4-4 or 4-1 and is actually not bittersweet. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. I'll scan it soon..

So why would he be interested in the aquaintances from seven years ago of a guy he barely knows and isn't fully interested in talking to? Unless it's vital information to a case, why would Apollo even care?
And for that matter, why would Phoenix even tell Apollo about his old friends. Though he trusts Apollo, he doesn't know him that well, and Apollo never asks, so why bother telling him about Maya? When you meet someone new, do you instantly tell them about all your friends and family?

Yeah, but in the last case we played through Nick's point of view again.
He never stood alone in a trial, why wasn't Maya there? And at the investigations after the trial, Maya wasn't there, too..
And they mentioned "his assistant".
In my opinion.. it sounds like "since he isn't a lawyer anymore, his assistant left."

That's the reasonable explanation why he never mentions his friends to Apollo (he doesn't even give any proper details of cases to Apollo till he's forced to right at the end) but not for the flashback trial or the part where you play as Phoenix. It could have been as easy as something like "I couldn't expect my 'assistant' to get back at such short notice, but I should be okay.." or something. Just get rid of a few seconds of Meekins to make up for it (Okay, I hate Meekins.)

It's easy to 'in hindsight' imagine plausible reasons why Maya wasn't there for the flashback, (though I think the writers were simply writing like she didn't exist) something to do with being busy taking over as Kurain Master or whatever and Phoenix not expecting her to rush back at the last minute. Actually, the murder trial in 4-1 is a bigger plothole, since I can't imagine Maya would let him be on trial for murder without showing her support, even if they hadn't seen each other for 7 years.. we can pretend she's offscreen somewhere, but of course there's nothing to actually hint at it..
I can imagine her, unwillingly, leaving for Kurain after he's disbarred, but I don't believe she'd abandon him, because it goes against every second of characterisation in the 1st 3 games between them. I also am not sure that Maya would want to stay permanently in Kurain, or that there is any need for the Kurain Master to stay permanently in Kurain. (Though of course, the excuse of being a legal assistant is gone.)

I refuse to let this thread die to the second page, so here I come again with yet another fic. It's Maya's little diary, which she's kept since some time after the Hazakura case. It was certainly an interesting challenge trying to tell things from her point of view while still keeping her in character. =p

Not much inspiration for fanfic of this couple myself lately.. the last one I wrote was Phoenix and Maya, not Phoenix/Maya.. but being the evil, evil shipper I am I didn't interpret the prompt to the letter to prevent additional 'issues' for my ship hehehe

I read the Diary fic! It was a really nice read, I did enjoy it.
Though Maya seemed to ..." SO HARD!" things a lot haha. I really liked the touches with Edgeworth and Iris! Bit embarrassing that Edgeworth had to give him gas money :\ Made me cringe a bit. Nick turns out to be a big slacker, leaving poor Maya running around after them, can't really see her doing that though! I imagined more of Trucy and Maya playing up to Phoenix's soft side and being a push over.

for 4-1 to 4-3 the game is played from Apollo's point of view so theres really no reason for him to talk to them. In 4-4 the part thats from Phoenix POV is
