So today in Criminal Justice class, we were doing mock trials, and naturally, I chose to be the defense attorney. So the prosecution calls their witness, and, based on my Gyakutarded mindset, as soon as I heard a contradiction, jumped up, pointed my index finger, and screamed, "OBJECTION!"

Oh, my teacher's face was like, "O_O Wtf are you objecting to?"

So I say the contradiction. And then my teacher points out that you're supposed to say what the prosecution is doing wrong, not cross-examine the witness!

Phoenix Wright, you failed me! ;A; That's what I get for relying on a Japanese game, though....>_> That's more fun, anyway. ;_; But it was so embarrassing. :larry:

Well, I'm sure you got points for pointing out the contradiction, even if you did do it in the wrong way.

And as long as when you pointed out the contradiction you were speaking in Phoenix-sprites, it's okay :edgy:

Objections are supposed to be to the opponent doing something wrong, such as badgering a witness, right?

Wikipedia wrote:
In the law of the United States of America, an objection is a formal protest raised in court during a trial to disallow a witness's testimony or other evidence which would be in violation of the rules of evidence or other procedural law. An objection is typically raised after the opposing party asks a question of the witness, but before the witness can answer, or when the opposing party is about to enter something into evidence. The judge then makes a ruling on whether the objection is "sustained" (the judge agrees with the objection and disallows the question, testimony, or evidence) or "overruled" (the judge disagrees with the objection and allows the question, testimony, or evidence). An attorney may choose to "rephrase" a question that has been objected to, so long as the judge permits it.

An objection may also be raised against a judge's ruling, in order to preserve the right to appeal the ruling.

OH GOD THE FLASHBACKS

This is just like the time I tried to set up a mock trial, but I used PW rules. I tried to teach them to my friends, but they just got wierded out by my fangirlness. During one of our practices, I actually said "I sincerely hope the defense is decent for the trial." She always dresses in a way that she manages to show even more than April May. :nick:

Anyway, we spent so much time goofing off that the actual mock trial was pretty much completely improvised. I was the prosecution, of course. I even dressed up all spiffy for the occasion.

It was a DISASTER. We pretty much opened with me making a nonsensical opening statement, and then a bunch of FAILED cross-examinations. I even said "Your honor, the defense is clearly intoxicated." at one point. :redd: I only said it because she wouldn't stop giggling.

In short, it was the first and last mock trial I ever did. Case closed. FAILURE.

There actually is an objection that lets you point out a contradiction in the other side's questions. If someone asks a question that contradicts established facts, or assumes some fact that hasn't been established yet, you can say, "Objection! (side) assumes facts not in evidence."

It might have been funnier if instead of freaking out the whole classroom, you just pulled out a cardboard "OBJECTION!" sign, and held it forward with a pointed finger.
Makes the reference easier, anyway.
I'm gone for so long, and the colors got all psychedelic! Woohoo!

I'm doing a mock trial in which you can't object at any point.
