Elizabeth had went back into Mousy-mode. Her mind went blank as the girl in front of her smiled, seeming to have not noticed Elizabeth's nudge. She occupied herself with fiddling with her shawl, twisting the thin cotton material around her forefinger, then letting it unwind again, before twisting it round once more.

Liz...that was the first time she had ever been called anything but Elizabeth or Mousy. Her friend had never given her a nickname, because they knew she wouldn't answer if they called her anything but Elizabeth. Although, she had to admit, it did feel nice, having someone call her 'Liz'...

The nervousness faded slightly, as Elizabeth found herself trusting Nadine more. She watched as Marissa pranced off with that man (she had yet to learn his name), looking as happy as ever, "It seems that Miss Edgeworth has found a partner, anyway. And quite a nice one too. A bit spiteful, but nice," she turned back to Nadine, "And what about you? Did you come with anyone? N-Not that I'm nosy or anything..."

"No, I want to talk about it," Elizabeth nodded, staring at Nadine with determination, "Would you...would you listen?"
Before Nadine could even begin to respond, Elizabeth's cell began buzzing. She gasped and hurriedly took it out (from a hidden pocket somewhere), flipping it open and holding it to her ear.
"I think you should be home now," a voice said gently.
"Mother?" Elizabeth asked.
"I think you should be home," the voice repeated.
"I said I was going out tonight. I told Lou to tell you. Did she?"
"Yes."
"Well...I won't be home for a while."
"You should be home."
"But I want to stay here."
"But I am your mother, Elizabeth. I help you when you need it. I listen to you when you ask me to. I look after you when you are sick. So you do what I tell you is best."
Elizabeth paused, "...But that's not what a mother does."
"What?"
"A mother doesn't help you when you just need it, they help you to help yourself. A mother doesn't listen when you just ask them to, they ask you if you need someone to listen. A mother doesn't just look after you when you are sick, they look after you forever."
"Come home. Now."
"No. I'm staying here."
"What do you think your father would think if he saw you now, hmm? Disobeying your own mother? Running wild out at night? Do you remember how he was killed? Do you want that to happen to you, Elizabeth? Well, do you?!"
"Don't bring Daddy into this..."
"I shall do what I like, young girl. Now come home this very instant, or I--"
Elizabeth slammed her cell closed, shoving it back in her pocket, and looked up at Nadine apologetically.
"Sorry," she apologised to the watching Nadine, "I'll turn it off."

I know it sounds kind, but she was ashamed of me. She didn't really love me. She was just going through the motions of loving me, saying what she thought a mother should say, things like 'I love you' and 'You are special' and 'I will never abandon you'. But she never accepted that I wasn't like the other children..."
Elizabeth shook her head, "Sorry, I didn't mean to ramble. You don't have to listen to my stupid stories..."

Elizabeth sat down gingerly on the chair that had been left by Marissa, keeping her eyes on her boots, "My father died...in a mob fight. He was such a kind man, so loving and clever. Well, when he was home, that is. His job was corporate embezzling and basic gang business. This is what caused his death. But even before that, I was a strange child.
"You see, I had a slight case of Dissociative Identity Disorder, which means I had two personalities...one of which I had no control over. I still do have the disorder, but I try to keep it to myself. I only change when I get scared or angry. I occasionally got annoyed...but I never knew. So when I was told that he was a criminal, I got scared that he was going to get arrested, and angry that Daddy could do something like that. I...I don't remember what happened after that...I asked mother, but she wouldn't tell me. That was when she started lying to me. Telling me she loved me, telling me that I was special and that I couldn't go out.
"On the third of December, Daddy went to work as usual. He...he got into a fight with another gang...He died by repeated wounds to the body with an axe..."
"Mother was devastated. She couldn't say she was his wife, because she would be arrested for keeping Daddy's identity a secret, but she didn't want him to die alone...We didn't go to his funeral. We went to his grave, though...She broke down there and then, scrabbling at the earth, trying to say goodbye. I got...scared. I...I don't know what I did. All I recall is waking up in my room. I was muddy and my throat was sore. I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror...and...I had a bloody gashes along my legs, arms and shoulder..."
She paused to pull up her skirt a little, showing a white scar running up from her knee, before letting the black dress swoop back down below her ankles, "I asked Mother, but she didn't answer properally..."
Mother, why have I got cuts?

"I asked her again at bed time...."

"I got angry...And I changed..."

"What happened....I don't know...but Mother wouldn't let me eat anything but oatmeal, rice, apples, oranges and eggs after that, because she didn't want to waste food on me. She said I made pretty clothes look ugly, so I was to wear plain clothes that were long, so people couldn't see my ugly scars. She said that I was meant to die instead of Daddy. She said...she said that I wasn't worth friends or toys, and that I was only allowed books, because books don't have eyes or ears. My confidence went down rapidly. I believed what Mother said. I believed that I was stupid and ugly and not worth the space. I believed that I had been selfish by putting Daddy in my space when I was going to die...
"Eventually, people started to notice that I didn't come to school. Inspectors were sent round. I was carted away to live with my Auntie for 'my own safety'.
"I was still quiet. My cousins didn't really want me in their house, but they were okay. Until school started. Children didn't like me being quiet. I was called 'Mousy', because I was small and ugly and nervous and dressed in strange clothes. Once, I got angry with a little boy that stuck chewing gum on my chair, and...and I was expelled. Nobody knew that I had Dissociative Identity Disorder, because Mother had kept it as a dark secret...
"Auntie tried to teach me, but gave up when I didn't react. I read all day, and I taught myself maths, and I even went to the library. I would write a note to the librarian, asking her if I could come in, and send it via paper aeroplane. She laughed the first time, and I ran away, thinking she was laughing in disgust. But the next time, she sent a note back, saying 'Yes'.
"I spent all my days in that library. I only communicated by notes. I wandered into the 'Law and Order' section once. The librarian picked a book for me. I read it, and was suddenly very interested in law. I read and read until I thought I knew everything. Then, one day, some girls came into the library. We eventually became friends. Friends...I don't even think they are friends now. They just boss me around. Like...like a mini Mother...But I would do anything to get back to that library..."
Elizabeth smiled weakly at Nadine, her blue eyes twinkling in the light, her pale cheeks going the slightest bit pink, "Thank you..."

Nadine ignored the tears that were brimming in her own eyes, and she stood up and pulled Liz into a hug. When she eventually pulled away, she looked at her friend and said, “You know what? I’ll always be your friend. Even though I just met you, I can tell you’re a sweet, sensitive person. And if you want to go back to that library, I’ll come with you. Nobody’s bossing you around any more. Not on my watch.”

This is different than what my other friends say... Elizabeth said into herself, Hell, she is different than my other friends altogether. But a...good different.

Elizabeth sighed, "You must think I'm so stupid to put up with my mother...But it just didn't occur to me that there was any other way of life. Even though I don't want to, I still love Mother with all my heart even after what she has forced me to endure, and I would die for her. It hurts knowing that she wouldn't do the same thing for me...But it is knowing people like you and the librarian and Daddy exist, people who don't enjoy watching others suffer, that makes living worthwhile..."
Elizabeth smiled, waving the handkerchief as if her words were annoying flies and she was trying to swat them away, "Listen to me, rambling away again. Do you want a drink? I'm parched."
