As for coming off as perverted, that's fairly simple to solve if she'll listen and give you a chance. I've actually got concerns about being in a similar boat with someone I've got a crush on. Just engage in friendly conversations with her and keep the time and place restricted to when and where she is in no danger. It's kind of hard for you to be a threat to her if, say, you only spoke with her during lunch. This way, you can get a better sense of her personality and ascertain if she's really someone you want to love while she gets to know you better and come to a more accurate conclusion about you.

At the least, I think I've learned from that encounter. If I fall in love with someone again (which I'm sure I will at some point), I hope I won't take three years to finally tell her. Then again, going on a friendly outing--or even a date--requires far less courage than confessing one's love. Most of the people I know didn't actually have feelings for their dance dates; they just wanted someone to go with. From what I've gathered, it's often more of a friendly outing than a date.

Maybe hate was the wrong word, shy guys can be awesome. What I meant was I like to be sure they like me, I dont like being messed around and becoming worried if they do or they don't and all that.
Also, even the most confident girl will be scared of rejection, because it feels like nobody wants you :/

There's one thing that I'm wondering about, though. And it figures that I'd be able to make an analogy to Ace Attorney. Say her and her girlfriends have already made plans to attend the dance as a group, without dates, and the girl of my pursuits shows reluctance to break from her friends. I've got two options.

Of course I'm thinking [Press harder], but I would never force her to change her plans if she feels very strongly about them. I'm also hoping she won't take me asking her to the dance as a "I love you, be my girlfriend" proposition. I don't move quite that fast XD

Either way, whether you ask him, or he tells you on his own, make sure you both establish your thoughts on the matter when the situation finally arises. You're friends, after all, and the only thing worse than being rejected is letting it ruin the friendship you've built up. Rejection DEFINITELY hurts, but not as much as losing a friend because of it. Besides, as has been pointed out, feelings might change. Maybe you'll fall in love with him later, or he'll fall out of love with you.
