Al looked around. He didn't see any cameras. Nor did he see any officers. "Yes." He whispered to Lucias.

Lucias paused for a moment. He was collecting his thoughts on the matter.
"So, either way, you are screwed, huh? Sounds pretty harsh. Well, just stay here for now, I'll probably come back and chat with you at some point if I need to use you as a witness." He said, then prepared to walk out the door to his bench on cue.

"I'd say wish me luck, but I already have a ton of mental conflicts right now, so yeah, just chill here for now."

Studio audience applauds

"Are we ready for the first trial of the day?" The baliff asks the audience.

"Yeah!" They yelled.

"We here we go! Your Honor, are you ready?" The baliff asks in the direction of backstage. The Judge comes out and makes his way to his seat in the middle of studio applause.

"What's this first case?" He asks.

"Murder!" The audience replies.

"The defendant?"

"Al Machino!"

"Let's bring him out!" The baliff yells.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"That's my cue." Al said, willing to face his fate. "If it comes to it, I'll talk to you about what's going on." And with that, Al made his onstage appearance.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"What's your plea?" The Judge asks, as the baliff gives him the microphone.

"Not guilty, your Honor." Al says, as he goes back to the room of whence he came.

"You heard him! Will his plea go through?" The bailiff asks, only to receive a negative response from the audience.

"Let's bring out our contestants!" The bailiff yelled, signaling the attorneys to come out to the stage and to their places.

Martha walked behind the defense's table. She wasn't nervous anymore. Now, she was just going to make sure Al would get a 'not guilty,' or, at least, suspend the trial so she could investigate. She let the energy from the audience course through her...

Hi I'd like to join...
Seeing the current trial is already underway, is it okay if my character just watches from the audience until it's over?
(He's late, of course.)
Give me a role, and I shall fulfill it. (You need a detective? You got a detective! Need a prosecution/defense aide? You've got one!
Bio will be posted after some_person answers.

((I am fairly certain sure you can become an audience member. Just make up whoever you think we should have! I think!))

In truth Asuka loved watching these trials and seeing the verdict, espically on murders. They were usually guilty but Asuka had weird feelings...this was going to be an odd trial and the defendant would get what was coming to him....

"MAKE THIS INTERESTING!!! ..whoops..."

Oh boy....I let the energy get to me....

Lucias stepped up to the podium in his usual manner.

"Hey, ladies and gents!" He said, arms high and shouting loud. His actions and words contrasted his current appearance. "Are you ready for some action!? Cause Prosecutor Meracad is ready to dish up some judgment!"

The crowd always cheered to this. They liked the pep-talks. However, this wasn't his concern at the moment; instead, he cast a look over to the defense-- to Martha-- with a big grin, like he knew a funny joke.

(ooc: I'll just post a bio and start, but leave off the occupation for now)
Name: Thibaroo Flufflefox (shortened to Thib)
Age: 23
Occupation: Freelance Journalist
Physical Description: Usually dresses down, average height (perhaps a little on the tall side), really messy hair (dyed blue)
Personality: Happy go lucky, if he can "get serious," he sure doesn't show it. Friendly, but can take an intense disliking to people who aren't nice to him. simple minded, also somewhat spontaneous.
Likes: Games, ice cream, anything fun or interesting
Dislikes: Silent types, anything too serious, boredom
Motto: "Spontaneity and whim are the order of the day." He read in in a fortune cookie once.

Thib ran in to a cheering crowd.
"Aw, I'm late again. I wish they'd change that no ice cream in the courtroom rule."
He started walking around looking for a seat.
He then noticed someone yelling something like "MAKE THIS INTERESTING!"
He (naturally) turned in that direction to see if he could strike up a conversation.
Thib went ahead and strut right up to Asuka. "Hey. I, um, heard you shout."
Realizing this might not come off as polite, he asked, "So, um, is there a place I can sit around here?"

"Oh! Sorry..The Crowds energy makes me do crazy things. Oh, A Seat? Let me look..."

Asuka started to look around here..It was rather full but lucky there was a seat behind her. How odd....Guess that smelly guy left.

"Hey, there is a seat behind me. You could take it if you want."

"You think that the defendant is guilty?" The bailiff asked. He always does this for regularly appearing attorneys.

(ooc: Okay then, I'll edit the bio. Thib is a journalist, it goes with his curious nature.)

Thib thought the seat smelled kind of funny, but he sat down nevertheless.
"Thanks." He started rooting around for a notepad.
"I'm a reporter, by the way. I forget which news company I work for, though. ...oh, that's right. I work freelane. I forgot.
I like to cover these "trial" things, you know. They're awfully exciting. Do you ever wonder what it's like to be one of the people up there?"

Without giving any time for an answer, Thib plowed on.
"I actually studied law in college. Got a degree and everything. But my mentor told me to quit. Said I wasn't serious enough.
That's not true. I take fun very seriously. Why, just last week, I..."

"..."

"I'm sorry, I talk a lot, don't I? I haven't introduced myself. My name's Thib."

((Sorry. I keep getting kicked off the computer at home.)) Martha clenched her fists at Lucias's opening statement, and got a little red in the face when the bailiff asked if she thought Al was guilty.
"I wouldn't defend him if I thought he was guilty," Martha said, a little louder than she meant to.

"Just to appease the court," Lucias said, a glimmer in his eyes, "I would like to have Martha there understand that by the end of this, there WILL be a Guilty sentence, whether she likes it or not."

Then, he turned to the Judge, and said, with a slight bow, "Your Honor, sir, may I begin?"

"Are you ready?" The bailiff asked, receiving a positive response.

"Very well. Mr. Meracad, give you opening statement." The Judge said, waiting for his statement.

"Very well," Lucias said "If I could just cut the chatter and get right to it..."
He began to flip through some documents subtly, and then, finding the right one, pulled it out of the pile. "The defendant, Al Machino, has been accused of homicide, murder of the second degree, multiple accounts of to boot, on the date of March 10th, 2060. The victim, or in this case, victims, were all killed by the same handgun, each shot in a different location. HOWEVER! What is the most critical detail... is that the three victims were in fact... Mr. Machino's own wife and children."

At this point, he paused in the explanation of the crime report to let this detail sink in. He also wanted to see Martha's reaction.

Thib grunted.
"Pfft. Why would anybody want to do that?"
He writes down "Prosecution's Opening Statement is a Flop" despite all of the excitement around him.
"Hmph. I'd like to know how he got away with it. What do the detectives think they're doing?"
He got a camera ready for the defense's response. "I see a headline coming," he predicted confidently.

"Hardly, Miss Attorney." Lucias said, his face now solemn to match the mood in the air. "From your look, you seemed to not know much about the case, so I guess you needed that. Here are the full details, now that the shock-factor is outta the way. Take a careful listen, okay:"

"On the stated night, at 8:10 PM, Al Machino murdered his wife out of anger as a result of an argument they were having, and then children, who witnessed the act, with his handgun. According to the case details, this is currently classified as a Type-2 homicide, a.k.a. the spontaneous type, non-meditated, etc. This all happened within a one restaurant, owned by a one Danny Palochini, who was a witness to these events. Considering that not only he, but others were there to state the same story, it is 99% certain that the facts are correct, and Al DID murder his wife out of rage."

"NOW, my opening statement is done, Miss. I simply thought it best to get the facts out without the unnecessary drama attached. Oh, and if you need a copy, I'll just submit one for the autopsy report into the records for your perusal."

Autopsy Report wrote:
Defendant: Al Machino
Crime: Homocide
Victim(s): Mary Machino (wife), Jill Machino (daughter), Scott Machino (son)
Time of death: 8:10 PM, March 12, 2060
Murder weapon: Handgun
Cause of death: Bullet wound to the head, brain (Mary), 3 bullets to the chest, causing fatal damage to the lungs and heart (Scott), bullet traveled through throat, damaging spinal cord in motion (Jill)
Motive: Al had an argument with his wife (Mary) in Danny's Restaurant, which escalated into violence, causing the defendant to use his gun on his wife. Since his children witnessed the act, he had to kill them as well

Martha clenched her fists.
"Thank you," she said as pleasantly as she could manage. "Your Honor, is it time for my opening statement?" She was still only a second timer, and wanted to make sure she wasn't screwing up procedure on a case so dire.

The audience laughed, but the Judge silenced them. "Yes Ms. Fey, you may now begin your opening statement."

Don smiled as Lucias finished his opening statement.

"Very well, Your Honor," Martha said, ignoring the audiences laughter. "By the end of this trial, you will see that this man, my client, is innocent. And he, in fact, could never kill anyone. The one truly guilty of this crime..." she stared right at Don as she said the last couple sentences. "Will get their just desserts, no matter who they are or how powerful they think they might be. Nobody is above the law."

Don just returned Martha's stare, dropping his smile.

"Very well. Mr. Mercad, you may call your first witness." The Judge told Lucias.

Don waited to see his relative on the witness stand.

"Yes." Fernando told Lucias. "The entrance to the restaurant is the same as any other restaurant. In the inside, it has more of an Italian style. The murder took place in one of those booth seats. As for the murder, everything is on the autopsy report. I've made sure of it."

"The mother was leaning her back against the wall behind her seat, meaning that the suspect shot her from the other side of the table. The kids ran for help, but started in a way that allowed him to shoot their anterior areas. Read the autopsy report to understand what I'm trying to get at." Fernando told Martha.

"No. They tried to get out of their seats, but the way they were sitting forced their anterior side to face the suspect, and thus, the murder weapon." Fernando told Martha. "Have you ever eaten at a restaurant in one of those corner tables?"

"Like I said, I made sure everything was in the autopsy report. I even wrote it up myself. Of course I had to get medical assistance so I could retrieve the bullets." Fernando pulled out a bag with 6 bloody bullets. "I think this has some interest to the court."

Lucias was looking at the evidence details in front of him, counting on his fingers subtly, then pulled a lollipop out of his pocket and started to crunch away on it's bitter lime-flavor.
This was gonna be a waste of time, with this useless line of questioning.

... :objection: ...

"Your honor, I'd like to have Miss Fey quit with the pointless, and obvious, questions. There was plenty of details in the case- and autopsy-reports for her to cover what Detective Palochini has said already." He spoke, an air of boredom on his voice. "Besides, Miss Fey, wouldn't it be obvious that only one victim would have those ash-marks? Only close-ranged weapon-shots would leave them, so only the wife would have them-- if at all. Simple, yeah?"

Martha paused for a second to gather her thoughts. Then, she said, "Actually...It wouldn't make sense if there were only rings around the mother. Mr. Palochini just said, 'they tried to get out of their seats,' which means the children didn't succeed, and I take it to mean they were killed first. Isn't that what you meant, Mr. Palochini? If that's the case, then they were all sitting at the table, were all shot supposedly by my client, and I would think they would all be from the close range if that's the case."
