Nah. There's plenty of games better than Chrono Trigger (and Chrono Cross, for that matter), though that doesn't mean it's a bad game or anything like that. I do find both games to be fairly overrated by today's standards, however.

Nevar!! Chrono Trigger is one of the best RPGs ever! It's a bit old but it is a gem in today's vast sea of games.

I never liked Chrono Cross though, it seems to awkward when I played it. Combat system is nice though.

To put it shortly, CT, at least to me, is not the best game ever(mainly because many characters, Chrono and Marle in particular, are sadly left very undeveloped, or just unispired), but surely is one I remember fondly(the Zeal parts, the End of Time, Lavos' story and the final revelation about
Spoiler:
the Earth being the cause of the party's travel, as it was trying to heal herself
all counterbalance the shallowness of its character development).

Just my two cents.

What I'm about to say may end up being rather controversial among the fanboys in the audience.

Personally, the "Best Game Ever" crown has long since departed from Chrono Trigger. Back in 1995, it was an extremely good game, but nowadays it is beginning to show its age. What was once considered revolutionary is now becoming boring - mainly, the character development, the time travel storyline, and (most of all) the combat system. Active Time Battle is a terrible combat system, in my opinion, because reaction time and decision making should not be combined. If anything, allow me to make the decisions ahead of time, and then when the ATB gauge fills, the character will perform that action.

The ATB gauge alone makes combat very tiresome to me. When the gauge fills, I'm already in a mad rush to dish out the orders and I tend to make mistakes. Yes, I know there is a WAIT mode, but that barely helps, as it does not work unless you're in the Item or Tech menu.

The most frustrating part is that I can never seem to keep a savegame intact - every time I play the game, I end up starting it over from the very beginning, because I can't find where my save data went (or if I'm emulating the original SNES version, the save data has been long since lost due to me switching to a new computer, deleting all my roms for space, or whatever).
"Overall, I give it an eight out of ten, but only because it was made in China, and I am terrified of their government."

I think Chrono Trigger is a great game, but not the best, but in my opinion, it has some of the best music of its day. I still find myself humming some of the tunes sometimes. especially the dungeon where you fight lavos for the first time! (cant remember the name of it right now for the life of me!!! ><)

To me... Chrono Trigger is only the SECOND best game of all time.
I wish I could say it was the best, but EarthBound/Mother 2 to me, is just so much better.

Chrono Trigger is good, but there are better RPG's in the long run. Most who claim it to be the greatest game are probably nostalgia-ridden.

I'LL TAKE THE CASE!

I can easily make a case of how Chrono Trigger is one of, if not the best game ever made.

Graphics - Yes, they're "dated" now, but back then, they were jaw droppingly beautiful. The excellently used sprites, and awesome attack animations made the game a visual masterpeice. Plus, tiny visual cues which we take for granted now may have been inspired by Chrono Trigger. For example, several of the moves have a much better effect when matched with appropriate timing. When the enemy flashed, hitting A again deleivered a more devisating blow. How many games use small visual cues now a days? It was thanks to Chrono Trigger. Also, when you changed your weapons, the character sprites would also change weapons! The changing armor scene wouldn't come for awhile, but on the SNES, it was a great little touch.

Sound - Great music, perfectly conveying a scene that more 3D games now can't pull off. The amazing sound design still stands out, especially the use of different sound bites for attacks, really giving the satisfying feeling of impact, even without force feedback.

Story - Broke the JRPG standard. Instead fo a boy discovering unique powers to save the world, it's a boy thrus into a fantastic adventure of world annialation, doomed futures, and surviving hope. The dialouge for each character made them sound distinct, and the variety of sub-quests actually reveled more about these facinating characters.
Spoiler:
And, come on! What other JRPG has the main character kicking the bucket?
Lastly, but not leastly, Chrono Trigger did multiple endings before it was cool. Over 12 endings after the main quest! Most games barely manage one! But each of the endings provided some cool moments, and serious laughs.

Combat - The combat made ever battle unique, all requiring timing and good stratagy. Watching for visual and textual cues was key to success, forng you to expose boss weaknesses. It was much more then contantly hammering the enemy with your strongest move; knowing weakness and proper timing was the only way to win. In addition, positioning was extrmely important. The direction and range of your attack also had to be factored for most effectivly taking down baddies. The real time combat actually felt real time, giving the game a nice pace most RPGs have.

The reason that Chrono Trigger is one of the best games ever made is because there were so many things the game did first, and so many things tha game did right. So many games fail to live up to the fantastic quality of Chrono Trigger. I've played it lots of times, and even if I know what happens, the game still has one nice pleasent sprise after the other.

The graphics sure as hell are "dated", but it's not just back then. They still are good looking.

And.. uhm... FFVII did change the weapons' visual look, depending on what you had equipped, just like Chrono Trigger. So FFVII did do that.

It's a pretty good game, but it's EXTREMELY over-rated.

Chrono Cross also would have been better if there weren't so many friggin characters (and they developed the actually important ones better).

in my opinion it's the 2nd best RPG of all time. I think it will forever be held as one of the greatest RPG masterpieces of all time. period.

But just like I said It is very good for it's time, even ahead of it time. But just cause it was one hell of a game doesn't mean you have to count out every RPG to come out after. I bet anything there will be a RPG that comes out in the future andthe next generation of gamers will call it "Best RPG of all time" or even "Best Game of all time"

CT will always be there in the hall of fame, known as one of the greatest. But just like Pro sports the hall of fame is always added on to, and never ends.

Chrono Trigger holds the distinction as one of my favorite games. An older game keeps challenging Chrono's dominance, though, and a new one might topple both. But I digress.

Call me nostalgic, but 16 bit sprites were probably the pinnacle of game graphics. They had detail greater than that of 8-bit sprites, but still limited the emotions so that the player had to use his or her imagination. Chrono Trigger was one of the best games to use these graphics, as it fully embodied what a Super Nintendo game should look like. Detailed backgrounds with simple (if not cartoonish) looking characters, a variety of different kinds of enemies, and amazing effects.

The music for this game is still captivating, and if you don't like midis, there's an orchestrated version of every Chrono Trigger track inside of Chrono Cross. It's true. Check it out. Chrono Cross has my vote for best music in a video game, by the way. The game may not have been all that great, but the music was AMAZING.

Gameplay. Standard RPG fare here, but as has already been pointed out, it had certain things that set it aside from the normal Final Fantasy / Dragon Warrior stuff. The non-combat was great, though, as you never felt like the characters were moving too slowly or too quickly, and that's surprisingly important. Also, I really like the idea of coming into contact with an enemy to engage it in battle, as opposed to random battles.

Storyline. Possibly one of the best in any video game ever. Any signs of showing its age is merely an after-effect of hearing the same story for over ten years. However, the different endings and New Game+ make the game highly replayable.

Overall. One of the best. It depends on your taste as much as anything. It really is hyped today, and your annoyance at its fans might negatively influence your opinion of the game.

It's like Akagi said: It's in the Hall of Fame. That means there doesn't necessarily have to be "the best game ever," just that there are a few games that stand the test of time and prove to be among the elite.

I <3 CT and it's a great game. That's it though~ props to CT for revolutionizing the RPG world a bit. Specifically: New Game+ and multiple endings, and the fact that the game has zero random encounters. Instead, you see the enemies ahead of time and there isn't a (totally) seperated battle screen for them. Even to this day, if one of those features is included in a game, people feel it's NEW AND EXCITING.

On a side tangent, I never quite understand the "Is _____ the best game ever?" questions. No one seems to answer objectively, so it's more like asking, "Is this my favorite game ever or what? y/n!" and getting defensive when someone says aforementioned game sucks.

Perhaps I've been on Gamefaqs for too long. D:

Like 5 years ago I would've said yes, but since then I've played so much stuff I've really enjoyed that honestly can't justify calling CT the "best ever" anymore.

It just seems to be a game that people who always assert that "classics are best!!" cling onto.

Another horribly overrated game that became idolized and still held as "best" when better games came out. Sure, it's good, and was great when it came out, but so were games like Legend of Zelda, SMB, and Metroid, and they really aren't best game ever material anymore.

Honestly, out of RPGs alone, I can think of plenty I like better than Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger was definitely good, hell, great, but I gotta agree it's showing its age.

I actually got hold of Chrono Cross recently, and I'm just into Fort Dragonia. It's a good game, music is downright wonderful, but it's showing its age like CT.

I don't really care for Chrono Trigger to be honest. A lot of characters weren't really developed as I like them to be. Plus, I don't really care for the story.

I do agree it's a great game, but not the best game ever. It's a top 10 game for SNES and earlier RPGs, but it's doesn't really grab me as much as Tales of Phantasia, FFIV, the SMT games, and the classic Super Mario RPG.

I've always felt that CT was more than the sum of its parts. There are games with better stories (though the CT story is fun and nifty), better characters (though I will always love Magus, Crono, Frog, and the rest), and better gameplay (though for ATB, it's the best Square's ever done) ... I'll also concede that some might find more visually or aurally appealing games, though IMO the CT/CC soundtracks are the single best gaming soundtracks EVER...

But there's no game I've ever played that has its charm. That is just so much... FUN to play.

I won't try to defend that CT is "the best game ever" but as many have said it deserves to be considered as one of the greats from the Golden-era of SNES gaming. There were enough new ideas infused into the game to distance it from the more classical RPGs of the time (namely double/triple techs, tech effect zones, and "pop up" battle screens), and enough interesting story points to keep the game going (who could ever forget their first trip to Zeal?). In my younger days I thought this to be vastly superior to Final Fantasy 6 because the characters would actually run up and attack the enemies, rather than "air-fighting" directly in front of them and having it somehow do damage. Little details like that made it amazing for its time.

That said, there are plenty of things CT did that other games have done a far better job with. The characters weren't very customizable, and in a lot of ways they lacked depth aside from a few specific incidents. Glenn had his issues against Magus, Lucca had the incident with her mother, Robo had the situation between him and the rest of robo-kind, but beyond these isolated incidents the characters were largely removed from what it was they were actually doing. I'm not even gonna get into the problems that come with having a story based around time travel. From a gameplay standpoint Chrono Trigger is a classic, certainly worthy of "hall-of-fame" status, but there are games out there that deserve the crown over this one.

I'll ask again, though, why does this title need to exist? Obviously, every gamer has a different opinion.

When you say "there are plenty of games better than this," what do you mean exactly? Are you saying that you like different games better? Or that there are other games that are quantitatively better somehow?

Cuz honestly, it doesn't get much better than Chrono Trigger as far as I'm concerned. I was there when it came out, bought it first day. I was playing it for years after I beat it the first time. I can't say that for many other games, much less story-based ones. I can't tell you how many all-nighters I pulled on my first two or three play throughs, and it wouldn't be until Chrono Cross that I would spend an excess of twelve hours playing a game, and CC was more for the fact that it took forever to get anything done.

For you, of course you're going to have a different opinion. Even if you share my experiences with Chrono Trigger, I'm sure that there are other games that you had better experiences with. Or a better time playing. Or more fun with.

Or maybe you got into it too late. After Final Fantasy VII came out, there was a mad rush for Chrono Trigger, with people calling it the best game ever, the best RPG ever, the best Super Nintendo game ever, etc. That would be enough to turn a person off after hearing it for so many years. I feel the same way about Earthbound, truth be told. And don't get me started on the Final Fantasy series.

However, it can be agreed on that it is an amazing game. People from the newer generations of gaming, as well as old schoolers can agree on this. The storyline is captivating, the music is phenomenal, the graphics are amazing (for the time, of course), and really, up until that point, it might have quantitatively been the best game ever.

But there are different games with different experiences. Super Smash Bros Melee I'm sure holds the most hours of my life. Link's Awakening is the one game I can pick up no matter what and play from start to finish. Twilight Princess outdoes Chrono Trigger in almost every comparable aspect, in my opinion. Hell, loathe as I am to admit it, Final Fantasy X might have been better. And really, the most fun game I've ever played, the most well-designed, with the best graphics, music, and gameplay overall: Metroid Prime. And that doesn't even have much of a story.

Graphics will improve, and as much as people will try to make a quick buck off of a half-assed game, there will be those who try to overcome the former greatest. It's not fair to say Chrono Trigger is the greatest game of all time. For many reasons. But to classify it with other games as some of the greatest, that's what this classic game deserves.

CT was a nice game, I have no problems with it, really.

CC, on the hand, was downright confusing, a game a gave up on before leaving the village.

(As for FFVI, I don't think it is the best either. It was just too frickin' hard. Never got past that floating island. Hardest. Final Fantasy. Ever.)

I don't think CT is the best game ever. I don't know if there can ever really be a game that can be called the best ever, as it's all a matter of opinion.

CT is personally one of my favorite games. On the other hand, CC is one of my least favorite.

It's all a matter of personal opinion. Some people will think it's "the best gaem evar omglol!!11", while others just like it, and other just don't care for it as much. I personally think the game is great, but it's clearly not "the best game ever made". This thread could go on page by page, with lots of fanboy/fangirl rambling on why it really should be the best game of all times. But the fact is that it really isn't. Not anymore.

I just remembered my number one complaint with the game: no incentive once you gain the ability to time travel at will (which is very early on).

You go through the whole thing feeling as if there's no imminent threat any time soon. "Oh, there's Lavo's, but screw him! I can travel through time at will. Why should I make a hurry just to get to him?" It doesn't feel it as you play, but in retrospect, it's quite slow and never truly feels as if you're in deep shit or rushing to save the world.

Perhaps traveling through time shouldn't have been done so freely?

Chrono Trigger is an Ok game imo. Not the best, but definitely above average in that point of time. I always thought Chrono Cross is a better game... but thats just me.

I enjoyed Chrono Trigger. It had its flaws, but so does everything, right? Honestly, though, I enjoyed FF2 and FF3 (IV and VI) just a touch more than Chrono Trigger.

However, when it comes to the title of best game ever, so far, my vote goes for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. (In its original format, at least. It sort of, um, lost a few things in translation... *coughbadactingbadscriptingcough*)
