"I want to come with you," Luis said. "This place is pretty creepy. Besides, we'll notice more with two pairs of eyes, I always say."

It was then that Torque walked into view. Ever silent he looked at the people standing in the van and panicked. He runs to the door of the cathedral not knowing what is in there.

- Oh, right! Let's go, then...

He noticed how the other men that was here left hastily after calling someone, but he had other things to do. He was more concerned with his grandfather. He could get worried sick rather fast. And besides that...he was feeling a chill down his spine with that place. Somehow the bare woods were a bit creepy...perhaps it was the place's atmosphere?

He walked to the direction Josephine pointed to, catching up with her.

- Thanks again. I feel a lot better now.

{8:05 pm}

A small blue car slowly parked itself on the outskirts of the forest that were said to hide the village of St Jean in them, as if to scare people away.

Scare? Pah. When people hear those things, they just have a desire to explore them even more. Especially if there's a story involved...

"Ooh, I can just picture it now!" The blue car door opened and a young girl popped out, looking positively gleeful.

"Tonight's my night...oh yes...I can feel it now! Danielle Malweski, the new star journalist of Manifique France!" She searched her bag quickly.

"Lemme see...notebook...yup...pen...yup...ooh, lovely! I can picture it now..." She began to almost strut to the crowd of dark trees, as if she was totally confident.

"Death in Desolate Company: The real scoop behind the death of our beloved president's son! And I'll be the one to snatch this story right up! It'll make my career, and this is my very first story as well! FABULOUS!"

She screamed the last word, and then quickly headed off into the forest.

(OOC: Yeeeeah, I might have spelled Manifique wrong, I know. ^_^; Sorry.)

I REALLY don't want to give someone I barely know that much trouble...

- Hum...you said you were just passing by, right? Well, I'll just follow your lead. Then I guess I'll be able to contact my grandfather and we can work things out. No way I'm getting you to go so far off your way just to help me.

He sighed, a little sad it had to come to this. Him asking for help, that is. He wasn't sure of what his grandfather would think of this accident either, but he was sure he would at least send someone to help. Urk.

Wait...did I just hear a scream...?

...

Nah, my mistake.

"Okay, then. My car's just over h-" Josephine said, but stopped herself. Her car was gone. What the-? Where'd it go?!
"WAS over here. Looks like it's...gone..." Darn it! Josephine laughed at the irony before turning back to him. "I'm sorry. I guess we're stuck here for a while..."

"No matter how much I scratch this wall, the only color I find is black"

McCoy, Ruiz and the police officers were at the facade of Saint Jean Cathedral. The facade, built in the purest concept of gothic art, displayed the shape of blackl angles and saints staring the horizon, and close to every corner had it's personal gargoyle...horrid figures of monsters and dragons with their mouth quite open, ready to spew the rainwater of the roof...apparently.

The two detectives entered the church while the police officers remained outside. The place was illuminated with several powerfull stand lamps placed there by the investigation team from the very first day. However, some of the niches and corridor in the area still required the lamplights to reveal themselves.

The nave of the cathedral was spacious and awe inspiring, and it could very well one of the finest examples of gothic architecture. The inner walls, just like those outside, where of a pitch black. The paintings with catholic motifs hanged squarely and perfectly on the roof. The organ up on the choir, though old, still seemed capable to pull out a couple notes. The comunion table was of inmaculate marble and seemed ready to start the ceremony. And finally the altar, along with most of the side walls and a couple other things, was richly adorned with religious motiffs in gold, silver, and precious jewels. There were no spiderwebs at view, but maybe the forensics team had swiped them off already.

Too much for an abandoned church, specially with so many tomb and ruins raiders going around.

McCoy and Ruiz approched the center of the main aisle. In the floor, they found a circular hole made just recently with force. One of the pictures McCoy had just received returned to his mind.

"We must be missing something" He told Ruiz "I can't possibly think of any place we haven't searched yet. Any ideas?"

Danielle continued through the woods. It was quite dark and several twigs and leaves lay all over the ground. Pushing a branch out of her way, she saw something come to view...

It was a rather large cathedral, black as the night sky, and very...menacing looking. She didn't know why, but the place gave an eerie vibe off.

"Well now, it seems that I've stumbled upon the first signs of a scoop! This cathedral is...certainly...interesting." She muttered, standing behind a tree, her head poked out so she could see it.

...What, really? Just dissapeared...? What the hell...

Russell held is impulse to facepalm. Instead, he scratched his head, not really sure of how to answer politely. Well, she was indeed kind to him just for helping him. He shouldn't be frustrated, then. Still, it took Russell a minute to answer.

- Hum...OK. I have no idea how it dissapeared, but...it isn't over here anymore, then...

He checked the surroundings, but there didn't seen to be anyone over there besides them.

What now? Oh, wait...that mansion...

- Miss, I guess I saw a mansion over there, just past these woods...maybe we can get help there? Or are you going to search for your car? I will help if that's the case...

He smiled to the pale woman, knowing that she must have gotten worked up with her car sudden dissapearance.

- After all, I owe you my life, I guess.

"I think it would be best to go to the mansion for now. By the time we find my car, it probably won't be in tact," Josephine said. Her voice was calm, but she was shaking. Like she had the urge to hit something. And she had the urge to hit herself. She should have remembered the parking break.

"The hole seems out of place," Luis said. "And recent. Hm...I wonder what happened to cause this."

Kenneth woke up, his house was pitch black, he had to go to the cathedral ¨That´s the only place where I´ll find answers¨ He got into his car and went straight to it, he stopped and saw the New St. Jean´s woods, they were so beautiful... this may be the last time he saw them, then he entered the cathedral hearing music by his radio to calm himself, he could see a bible but he didn´t took it, because he didn´t understood french very well, suddenly he heard noises, and hid in the confession room...

Chrysanthemum was running towards the corner store. Damn! Ugh I'm going to be SO late... she said as her footsteps rang against the old road. Once she got to the store, she burst through the door "A-ah ha s-so-sorry I'm la-late.." Crissie breathed heavily, out of breath. As she dragged herself towards the counter, she tripped and fell. "Agh.. oh god.." she said with hardly any sound. Chrysanthemum then coughed up some blood, she had gotten this odd sickness that when she ran to hard, she would cough up blood. "Oh geez... not again."

Russell double checked his few things before nodding in agreement.

- Fine. The mansion is over...there. Let's go.

He pointed to the still visible mansion through the woods. It was funny, though. The first time he saw it, it seemed like any other mansion. Now it seemed a little darker, creepier or something along those lines.

Must be this cold wind.

- Oh...well, I came to France to see my grandfather. Nothing more than that. My grandfather moved here some time ago, and me and my father heard only a few about him afterwards. Then one day, I just happened to receive a letter from him, so I thought it was very important. I immediately set sail here. I mean...not immediately, as it is. I had to ask the Chief first. I'm a police officer, so I can't just go away whenever I please. Luckily, after staring at me for some whole 3 minutes, he granted me permission, which I was almost sure he would deny! So here I was, going to the city my grandfather is, when I happen to crash...

Russell sure spoke a lot more than he expected to. He got a little embarrased, so he blushed slightly and stopped talking. At least it got him a little distracted from the creepiness around as they walked closer to the mansion.

- So! Hum...why were you passing by, Miss?

"I am a doctor," Josephine said. "Appearantly, someone was in trouble at a different hospital from where I usually work. In so much trouble, they requested help. No other doctors would go because they would have had to pass by here. I told them that a little creepiness is no excuse to let someone die, so I came. Then I saw a bunch of trees that were bent over and figured someone was in trouble so I..." she stopped. "Anyway, that's why I'm here."

Russell heard the doctor closely.

- I see...is this place that fear-inspiring? The atmosphere does look a little darker than your usual ones, but...I don't know. Why fear this place?

So I guess it wasn't just my impression of this place. It must be spooky like this for a reason, though.

He kept walking normally. They had to be at least midway to the mansion already.

"Well, there is a rumor that this place is cursed. I think it's completely bogus that people would avoid this place because of a rumor, but appearantly that's what's scaring everyone off," Josephine said as she kept walking.

Name: Frank East
Age: 23
Occupation: Alcoholic Bum
Party: Luckless Passerby
Description: Frank is a man of medium build, wearing a thick dirty brown coat over a flannel shirt and blue jeans. His eyes are bloodshot and he seems quite tired. His hair is black and he has brown eyes, as well as a fairly dirty face.
Bio: Frank has been drinking ever since it was legal for him to do so, and is always seen grasping a bottle, whether it has alcohol in it or not. Of course, he eventually lost his house, and now lives in something a bit more portable, a large cardboard box. He is constantly wandering, and that is how he ended up at St. Jeanne.
Ability:
Scavenge - Being Homeless has allowed Frank to examine places where most people overlook, such as a small alcove with some furniture he could use.
Backpack- Frank tends to keep stuff he's previously scavenged in his backpack. Most of it is useless, though.
Items:
1) Half-empty bottle of strong whiskey
2) Butterfly knife
3) Folded Refrigerator Box
4) Backpack
5) -empty-

Frank stumbled into the cold atmosphere surrounding St. Jeanne slightly sober, as he was trying to conserve what was left in his bottle. As soon as he saw the church, he saw it not as a derelict death trap, but as a shelter from the cold air. As he made his way over, he saw that others had already gone inside the church. " People? I wonder if they have booze," he thought as he followed them inside the church.

- Oh...cursed? Yeah, I can't see how a mere rumor scared everyone...

Though I wouldn't believe that Ana Farfnair was able to control fire either if I only heard of it...at least until I saw it with my own eyes. I'm still trying to think it was an illusion.

...Which just turns this place a lot more creepier to me than I thought it would. I hope the courage don't fade. Urk. We're getting there.

- Hum...I guess I should say "sorry"...your car was lost because you came to rescue me, so...sorry...

He sighed.

[Old Saint Jeanne, 07:35]

McCoy kneeled to have a better look at the houle, the floor around it was cracked, but the hole itself held a perfectly round shape "Hmmm...this is about the place we found the body in. I'm guessing was made with the bar that held the body in that position. It's in the necropsy summary"

"Though, now that you mention it, this hole is far too perfect. I guess whoever made it with that bar must have had some incredible strength" McCoy touched the bottom of the hole with a pair of gloves. To his surprise, his finger sunk a little into the bottom. It was actually a fake bottom made sand, black sand.

"Odd, I remember the forensic team have already revising the hole, I believe there was not a trace of blood or anything in it" McCoy revised the floor again, there were no traces of the same black sand around the hole nor everywhere else at sight "This is new. Where did this sand come from? and what is it exactly?"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{07:40 pm, White dog pub}

The white dog pub was in escence a bar with the corresponding permits. However, the place actually housed one of the very few illegal activities in town. Dog fights. As well as all of what little prostitution housed the town. As it usually happens, illegal games attract illegal dealings, and the criminal persons with it. As small as NSJ may be, it still had it's fine share of criminals.

Talking of which...Adrien Ennui, local butcher and petit thief, was too busy finishing his sixth bottle. He had bought three himself, and won three more with a game of darts. unfortunately, he had run out o money and no one was willing to bet anymore against his aiming skills.

His gut was still dry.

"Hey, Berth, bring me two more and put them on my tab"

"No Adrien, you don't have any credit with me since the last time you didn't pay" Replied the bartender.

"Oh come on! I paid it full already"

"I'm sorry. Once a debter, always a debter, and I don't like my money that I don't have" Berth grinned, he seemed pleased with himself after that play of words he considered 'clever' "And before you even think about starting a little scene like last time, Let me warn you I still have a double barrle Manchester shotgun under the table"

Adrien didn't like being threatened, but contained his impulses. Berth was one of those people that didn't come to NSJ because of the farms, he had his own criminal reasons. Adrien always toyed with the idea that he was running away from something bigger than him and even Adrien.

Finally, he complied with the old man. He paid his booze and left through the front door, after all, to him...

"Keep four beers cold for me old man, I'm coming back"

...Stealing is a a way as good as any to get money these days

-------------------------------------

[Old Saint Jeanne, 07:35]

The four policemen were guarding the front arch when a figure appeared in the darkness. At first, it scared them, but then it revealed to be a drunkard. They wondered how he managed to dodge the perimeter surrounding the town, but then again, it wasn't exactly as tight as it should be. There were not enough hands to keep the place completely isolated. Not many men would volunteer guarding that frightening forest after all.

The detectives were in the cathedral, and all of them agreed that allowing a bum into the scene of the crime wasn't a good idea at all. Finally, the boldest of them approached the man, making sure his gun was readilly available to his hand.

"Sir, you are in a restricted area, please return to wherever you came from" He ordered in a cordial imponent tone of voice.

"Huh? Wuzzah? No, I'm supposed to be here. Probably. Yep. I'm here to... Search for evidence. That's it. See? That thing there? In the arch?" Frank said, arm outstretched, pointing to a small hole in the floor that what Frank presumed was a investigator was searching. " If you look closely enough here, you'll see... Sand! And lots of it. Yep, I can tell these kinds of things," he said, trying his hardest to convince the men to let him in, even hiding his bottle.

The police officer seemed confused, that was certainly not the answer he expected, and he was hiding behind his body something he tought was a bottle. He turned to the arch, there was indeed a hole...Detective McCoy was examining him just a while ago.

He didn't remember him from the outpost, but one never knows

"Maybe you can display an ID sir. Otherwise, you will have to leave the place"

Fumbling around in his backpack, Frank found and displayed a smudged card of plastic that he once received for attending a police demonstration, with the words Honorary Deputy were once able to be seen on the card. however, all that could be seen on the dirty plastic square was half of what seemed to be a star shape that was the roughly the same shape as a police badge. " Identification, here." he mumbled.

McCoy searched for a notepad in his trenchcoat by mere instinct. he had not brought one with him.

"No matter" he said "We can report this to Bordet ourselves, for now let's try and..."

Mccoy was interrupted by a sound of something...falling. He couldn't quite tell what it was until he looked back to the floor.

The hole that McCoy had made with his finger in the black sand was smaller.

"Did you touch..." the sound repeated, but this time McCoy was able to see what it was. A small quantity of black sand fell from somewhere up and into the tiny hole. Now the black sand at McCoy's feet was again regular and plain, not a sign of being poked with a finger.

The two detectives aimed their flashlights to the roof. It was incredibly high, none of them could clearly see where the sand was falling from, or even if it was still falling

"The roof....has the forensic team checked that already?"

---------------------------------------------

The police officer studied the ID card...or what was left of it. It was in a very sorry state, but it was legit that much he could tell. The state of it was so sorry though that he couldn't make out what it was.

Confused, he turned to his partners. They all seemed convinced that the man had no business in the area and should leave. however, he feared that by sending this man back to the woods he could be obstructing investigation, a serious charge in that area.

"Maybe we could ask the detectives about this"

"I'll go, but I think this is a waste of time" Said another of the police officers as he walked inside

"Please wait here mr...Eth?" the first police officer said "Feel free to check the plaza surrounding the cathedral though, as long as we can see you at all times...only the cathedral, the cloister, and the back of them are restricted right now"

"Thansh for the help," Frank said absentmindedly as he wandered onto the plaza. As soon as he was in an area he thought no one could see him, he started to look around for anything that could be of use to him. Even so, all he saw was useless, garbage, and a human finger. " Huh?" Frank thought as he lifted the finger in front of him, unsure of what to do with it. Thinking it useless, he tossed it in the direction of the entrance and began to scavenge again.

Ken managed to get out of the old confession room, he could hear voices, he was scared, he ran to the exit and left the cathedral, he watched the old Saint Jeanne, it had such a beauty yet there was something in the air, then he saw the policemen there, he got near and said ¨Good night officers¨ he said and then asked ¨I didn´t know there was an investigation in here, did something happened?¨ Kenneth said while smiling

Luis looked up at the roof with his flashlight.
"I'll check the roof if no one has yet," he said, hiding his fear. "Does anyone have a ladder or something? If not, I guess I'll have to navigate through this cathedral and see if I can find a way up."

Danielle peered forward with her eyes, trying to pierce through the darkness. A sort of...an interesting man had started talking to the police in front of the Cathedral.

She quickly made sure the area was dark enough to provide cover...and then she ran forward.

Danielle ran right around to the side of the Cathedral, and praised her luck. A window was there and it was totally unguarded. Not to mention there was no glass. She tried to grab onto the windowsill, but it was very slippery and kept causing her hands to fall, to the point where on her fourteenth attempt, she had fallen flat on the ground.

"Ow...dang it...if I could maybe just get a boost or something...I know this Cathedral is worth checking out! Where there's smoke, there's fire." She told herself, glancing around the corner at the police.

"I think there should be...yes, there"

McCoy pointed at one of the corridors from the cathedrals. there was a dark door. McCoy opened it and a spiral ladder was revealed

"This should take us to the roof, it's dark though" the detectives started climbing the ladder when one of the officers called for them.

"Detectives, I hope I'm not interrupting anything"

"What is it officer?" asked McCoy

"There's a man out there who claims to be part of the investigation team. He has an ID but it's dubious"

"What?" McCoy asked alarmed. "Officer, stay here with detective Ruiz. Ruiz" He adressed his fellow detective "You can go up there if you want to, I'll handle this" then he walked towards the exit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"WHAT THE HELL!!" The three officers raised their guns and aimed at the mysterious man that had just come out of the cathedral "WHO...what are you doing here!?"

The man was about to answer when one of the other officers stated "For God's sake this is a bloody crime scene! and a special one at that! How could you pass the police barricade in the forest?"

"Silence Luke! speak anymore and you might just tell him everything yourself!" Replied the last officer, which seemed to be the one with most experience, then he continued "But now that you mention it...it's odd. The cathedral was supposed to be guarded to stop civilians from messing with the crime scene, where are Biggs and Wedge?"

"You are right Ben, they should be here. never mind that" Replied the first one, who then adressed the stranger "Now, tell us who..."

McCoy suddenly appeared from the front door. He looked pissed and after he saw both the man with the officers and the bum scavanging the garbage, and after he didn't recognize none he only grew angrier, but made an effort not to make it known. He signaled the officers to lower their weapons, but adressed the man with an imponent tone "Who the hell are you? and what are you doing here?"

Frank saw the red-faced investigator shoot both him and some other new guy a furious glance, then calm down considerably. Realizing his life would be forfeit if caught, he sneaked away to the side of the cathedral. He heard what sounded like someone scrambling up on the other side, but dismissed it as nothing. When he felt unwatched, he took a long swig from his bottle, leaving barely any whiskey left.

Torque watches as the police walk into the house. Thinking it best not to get seen Torque walks outside of the building. He proceeds going down the street and out of view.

Luis climbed the ladder to see what was on the roof.

((Sorry, Aliucon. I kept forgetting to reply to you. Grr.))
"It's not your fault," Josephine said, "I'm the idiot who forgot to set the parking break. You have nothing to apologise for."

((No worries. XD))

- But...oh, we're here.

He stopped to have a good look on the mansion's appearance, now that it was just ahead of him. It's walls were pitch-black, which, now that Russell thought about it, made it very difficult to be noticed at night. He must have been lucky to see it from afar. The moonlight might have helped.

The mansion's atmosphere was a little gloomy and scary, there was a window or two broken, and so on, but there was an incredibly nice fence around it. The place was interesting but somewhat fear-inspiring.

A mansion in this state...must be abandoned. Oh wait...who are those?

Russell had just seen two guys guarding the entrance, apparently. If they weren't statues, that is, because they didn't seem to move. They were the only living things in sight, though.

- Hum...I can't blame people for calling the place "cursed" now. But anyway...I guess we should ask those guys there...

He pointed to the mansion's entrance.

"Yeah. You're right," Josephine said. She walked up to the men fearlessy. "Excuse me, sirs. Do you mind if we come in and borrow a phone? There are people who are probably wondering where we are."

[Adrien Ennui]

Adrien went about until he finally found what he looked for. there was a grocery store nearby, he could already smell the money.

He put the Santa Claus mask on and dashed inside, finding a woman apparently coughing "THE MONEY PR THE LIFE" He screamed, wacing his butcher knives to anyone approaching him and making his best to look dangerous.

Meanwhile, on the rooftop...

Luis gasped. He never would have expected what he found. On the roof, he saw a stack of dead bodies. The people that were supposed to be guarding the perimeter of the town. He shivered.
"C-can I borrow a w-walkie- talkie?" he asked, still stuttering. He didn't wait for a response, he grabbed one of the officer's things anyway.
"Mr. McCoy, you'd better get up here," Luis said. "There's something you need to see..." Then, he looked down with his flashlight. There was a message written in black sand. It read: STAY AWAY.
"S-stay away? Where is the black sand coming from?" Luis asked, obviously scared. Then, he regained his composure. "I need to get closer to see how these people died." He walked up to one of them, and noticed they were missing some fingers. The body was really black.
"They've already decomposed. But how? They couldn't have been dead for that long, could they?" he grabbed a finger, and it fell off the body right in his hands. Surprised, Luis dropped it, and looked where it landed. The area where he dropped it was covered in black sand, and there was no longer a finger there.
"Okay," he said calmly as he walked away.
"Where are you going?" an officer asked.
"I'm going to go throw up, now. Make sure to tell Mr. McCoy everything we found," Luis replied before running down the stairs and away from the ceiling.

"Hello? Is there anybody in there?" Josephine asked, tapping the man in front of her. He fell over, and Josephine bent down to take a pulse. There wasn't a pulse at all. The man was dead. "W-what kind of sick individual-?!" she turned to the other man. "He's probably dead, too. Which means...Whoever lives here is in danger!" Josephine knocked on the door before opening it. That's weird. The door's open, she thought as she ran inside.

W-What!? Dead?

Sure enough, when Russell poked the other man to see if he would react, he just feel over. Now that was real scary. He quickly checked the state of the body: it was cold and deformed. He was decomposing? Impossible, they couldn't possibly be dead in that position for that long without anyody noticing. Unless the mansion was deprived of any other human and...

There was something on the man's hand. He was holding something before he died? Russell opened his hand and grabbed whatever it was. It was a little piece of folded paper. There was something written, and the paper itself looked old.

Spoiler: Little piece of paper

What is this? "iawa yats"? No, the first letter is something else. But...

At this time, he noticed that Josephine had entered the mansion. He quickly stood up and went after her.
