to break the spirits, wouldn't he? But on the other hand, Diego Armando was put in a coma and didn't know anything when he woke up, but he was informed that Mia and Dahlia Hawthorne were dead. He knew that Hawthorne was dead, so when he saw her silhouette, why did he just strike her?

Sounds about right. I mean, she screwed up his life permenantly and never had the chance to express his rage. When he saw her he probably thought "She should feel at least some of the pain she made me go through", or something like that.
